  • There will be a giant void in the surf world when Kelly retires. Hope he stays in the game, maybe as a coach/mentor to the younger generation or more publicly as a surf commentator or judge...whatever makes him happy. He’s got too much inspiration and wisdom to offer to just fade off into the sunset.

    • When a WSL CT event is held, the attendance seems to increase during Kelly's heat and once finished it seems half the spectators leave. I am sure the WSL is aware of it as well as other surfers on the tour. Nobody in the sport draws viewership live or online like Slater.

  • Kelly ought to hook up with Valentino Rossi. Both are legends in their sports, who continued on and took it to the young guys. The quit while you’re ahead concept - that just cuts a career at the peak and denies so much more achievement. Look at what they did. They keep us inspired to do what we love, even when we’re “past it”, and that’s just one of the many admirable things about them. They definitely raised the bar!

  • Yeah...seriously....don't retire. You won pipe. You can compete with these guys. It's up to you, to manage your own expectations but it's obvious the tour itself is a lifestyle you enjoy. You know what Kelly....you should try taking it even more seriously. Skipping Brazil this year etc.....It's great that your relaxed about it but judging by this series you have a lot of "advice givers" around you who say the same thing. Have fun with it. Enjoy the competition no matter where you finish. And that's all great (and true) and everything....but you know sometimes you gotta buckle down and put the WORK in. What would happen if you REALLY buckled down and put a full season in doing as much training as you could? It is important to not take bad results too seriously, but it's also just as fine to put some pressure on yourself and to be disappointed when you don't do well. Bottom line is YOU'RE still on tour and they haven't been able to knock you off. KEEP going. Push yourself. PUSH history to it's limits. "He competed until he was FUCKING 60!".....lol. Imagine that. That would be so fucking cool.

  • It is easy to get heady. Who cares about his age. He is a professional surfer. If he believes he can compete with the best that are younger than him, so be it. I play two codes of Rugby and one of those codes I play at a semi-professional level. I started Rugby Union at the age of 30 and now in my 40s, I am still going. A lot of players on my teams and my opponents had no idea I was the age I was, like Slater, you just do not think about that. You have a body and mind, if your body and mind can handle it, you train, you perform, you work on your craft. An end of era should not be because of your age, especially when you can still compete at such a high level. It boils down to honesty. I think we need Slater to be iconoclast in a world of selfish drives of desire such as wanting to retire for the sake of retirement or wanting to be about how you feel all the time. Being a icon gives people hope, joy, love, and inspiration. Slater is a iconoclast role model to some degree, and this entails inspires even the biggest critic. Not many athletes come to mind when they changed the game and almost became the game or sport...Michael Phelps, Mr. Hockey, Thomas Brady. You do you Slater and just live. If your life is surfing make the waves your retirement home. If you stop competing life will slow down but the world will speed up for you. You do not have to win if you compete, just be part of the competition, be part of the events, be part of the world that slowed down for you for decades so it can give back to you in the end. When that time comes, it comes, but let it be natural. Balance and harmony.

  • Kelly grew up in a time when airs were not much of a thing so i dont think its fair to compare him to the kids these days who grew up learning so much surfing acrobatics. If kelly grew up today he would be throwing cork 7s. Also idk how old kelly is, but for his body to be holding together this well at his age is pretty incredible. I think once kelly mick and joel retire the surfing comp scene is gonna shift to being “airs or gtfo”. But what do you expect.

  • The whole series has been amazing thank you ! maybe that's just me but i feel like Kelly is a little too serious about the whole thing. that you can't stay with the guy your gonna compete against and obviously holding some kind of grudge about it. leo seemed a lot more relaxed in that context. it's not like your going for a bareknuckle fight. but i don't get that competitiveness in surfing anyway so whatevs ...

  • That French tune with the surfing there in Hossegor and Biarritz, was pretty sweet. Was that the Quiksilver headquarters in France? Could be a memorabilia museum! I’d pay for a walk through. Pretty rad bits of history preserved very stylishly. That area of France is my favorite; great surf vibes into Basque Country. I walked that entire coast in a day in 2014, from Biarritz to St Jean de Luz. And I walked over the Pyrenees from St Jean Pie du Port into Roncevaux. So gorgeous that area. Been to a lot of places, that’s got to be up there! Not a bad place to spend a bit of time, that’s for sure.
