‘Our system was built on power belonging to the people’: Rep. Crockett on civic engagement
Rep. Jasmine Crockett joins Ali Velshi to discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead for this year’s election, the importance of civic responsibility and how serving in Congress has informed her attitude toward democracy. “None of these seats belong to us,” Rep. Crockett tells Velshi. “The power belongs to the people and it’s time for the people to take their power back. For so long people have felt powerless, they’ve said things like, ‘It doesn’t matter if we vote, they’re going to do what they want to do.’ No. The reason they want to change the laws… is because they know that your power is just that strong.”

Rep. Crockett brings back what I was told growing up. Voting matters, integrity and ethics and compassion matter. Very inspiring to hear these values underlined again by a young person who has been willing to step into the fray and speak up.

The statement at the beginning that we didn't pick the fight with Trump, that we are in, but that it requires more from us, can be applied to Black-Americans specifically. We did not start this historic relationship with racism/White hegemony, as it pretends to Whites and us, but the situation requires more from us, especially because we are the victims of it. We are without questions victims, but how we respond to it, is what is most paramount, especially how we discipline and strengthen ourselves, to counter the effect of the historic forces that have and are working against out best interest. The woke, who now seems to be thought of as the voice of all or most Black people, take the opposite approach, which is to act as if racism, in all its forms, is the only, or only significant cause for the condition and position we are in today. Our allies should not enable us, in doing the things we do to make our situation worst. It only makes the overall goal for for fairness, justice, and peace for everyone in society, a reality more difficult to obtain.

As well as the rest of America! Rep. Crockett's work, protecting universal civil rights & liberties, benefits all of us! Are we not the "UNITED States"? What helps one, helps all and vice versa! We need to get back to the mindset that we are one nation, one team, despite certain elements trying to divide, splinter and weaken our union. "Chaos is a Ladder" for Trump to get back into power when he will have full reign to strip us of our democracy. Everyone is at risk of displeasing Trump eventually at some point or another, even those in the MAGA camp. He doesn't care about them either, he will use them as long as they are loyal. Dictators (or wannabes) don't need to care about others. Their narcissism is a relentless desire to focus resources on themselves, as everything else is sacrificed. (I am heartened by similar sentiments of other fellow Americans.)
