I was there. I'll never forget this performance's legendary cast, which at that time we used to take entirely for granted. Siepi incomparable, Zylis-Gara at her superb best.
Splendid performance with a cast seldom, if at all, matched these days. Siepi was the MET‘S preeminent Figaro for most of his MET career & elsewhere as well & in warmth of voice & lively interpretation remains the definitive Figaro & Giovanni to this day, IMO. Curious that Siepi was not always as interesting an actor in many of his other roles but as these 2 Mozart characters he reigned supreme. Krause, a strong Count in the George London vein, masters the entire range of the role which many baritones fail to do. Early Plishka sounds substantial as well & the female characters do honor to Mozart too.
