Some will lay anywhere, but some will find a geometrically pleasing location on your bedspread to to add themselves as a nearly perfect circle (not even just in the center, but at the 1/3 point on one axis).

  • I'll stick a relevant quote here that I read in a textbook: *"The most efficient logical order for a subject is usually different from the best psychological order in which to learn it. Much mathematical writing is based too closely on the logical order of deduction in a subject, with too many definitions without, or before, the examples which motivate them, and too many answers before, or without, the questions they address."* - William Thurston

    • Thurston is probably the right person to be saying that. I’ve been trying to learn about non-euclidean geometric spaces for a while now and I can say from experience that the literature on that stuff is impenetrably dense.

    • Can someone explain this quote? I don't get it.

      @eksutensifu6710@eksutensifu67102 жыл бұрын
    • @@eksutensifu6710 It's essentially about how higher mathematics is taught. Have you ever gone through a higher maths textbook? You start with definitions, (what are these, where did these come from, why are we defining such strange and precise objects?), then we move onto simple propositions from these definitions, then these snowball into bigger propositions and theorems. We are interested in the theorems, and this itinerary of learning IS the most efficient way to get there, but it certainly isn't natural. Further, it isn't the way the mathematicians who built these subjects deduced their conclusions; Gauss didn't sit down one day, and have his first ever thought on linear algebra: "AHA! I shall begin by calling a determinantal map a map with these three properties...". Especially for earlier maths (first year of uni) this can provide a small barrier to learning, and the type of content here on youtube is ideal to fill the gap that textbooks leave, in order to richen the study.

      @adamc973@adamc9732 жыл бұрын
    • @@eksutensifu6710 the ways to prove or formally construct a mathematical concepts tend to be different ones than the ways to explain and learn it. yet mathematicians often give too few examples, and instead often go straight into proving less-obvious properties of their systems. that's my interpretation anyway. it's (somewhat ironically) a bit badly written.

    • That's so cool. I'm halfway there(31), revisiting linear algebra to move on to calculus for algorithms. I chuckled the other day when I saw a 22 year old lamenting how late they developed their math skills. A lot of young people lamenting missed time, but age is also so relative. In that moment I knew there was someone older than me as well that I'd see who's returned to the journey of learning math. Nice to meet you, and so soon! It's easy to feel like it's late for something and it's cool to know there's always someone older not letting age be a factor.

One group is tasked with making one perfect pot, while the other is tasked with making as many unique pots as they can. At the end of the course, the second group's most recent pots were far better. • For me whenever I open a math textbook, I have a very clear idea "i want to learn about Deuring correspondence" or like "I want to learn about E_\infty rings", this already gives quite a bit of motivation as to why consider the objects even, the textbooks are there to give you the definition and details on how to play with things, but not quite a "Welcome to category theory! • @@aatmikrathod1391 I can give a hand-wavy gut-feel explanation. If a matrix M has det(M) = 0, M basically "squishes" the space from a higher dimension to a lower dimension. For M⁻¹ to exist, it would have to "re-expand" the space from a lower dimension to a higher dimension. This is a one-to-many relation. Inverses only exist for one-to-one relations (so that performing M and M⁻¹ will give unique answers).

In a thousand subtle ways, when these explainers exist, projects go faster, school becomes easier, and math-phobia becomes a little bit less common. A lot of excellent lessons and intuitions stay confined to isolated classrooms, or worse, confined to some individual's head. It takes effort to make videos, or blog posts, and to put them out there. Here, we're hoping to offer a little bit of activation energy to anyone who has thought about doing something like this, but just never got around to it.
