So another big surprise from Behringer in their frenzy of 30 years celebrations. This one is the POLY D and yep, it's a pretty heavily “inspired” instrument, that coming from the Minimoog of course.
But with quite a big difference, and the clue is in the name, well sort of. The Poly D is a four voice paraphonic MiniMoog voice, with additional features. Paraphonic as in it can play four notes, but they go through a single VCF and VCA.
Lets take a look....

Things I wished for when I owned a Model D: The ability to play more than one note at a time...check. Aftertouch and velocity sensitive...check. Sequencer...check. I'm already in line at Sweetwater. All I have to do now is figure out how to sneak it into the house without anyone noticing.
I'd just tell them it's a Christmas gift for yourself they won't know the difference, go for it.
Haha, has the eagle landed yet?
Check.
The same, my wife will catch me sooner or later.
exactly. And I wish I was 20 years old instead of 56 when all of these great synths are becoming available so cheap.
Im really glad they added a analogue chorus and not Digital delay or reverb. Thanks for listening Behringer.
More cv in/outs and a stereo delay would be great additions.
I would prefer an analog delay tbh

I think people expect way too much these days, limitations can be a creative tool. This is utterly incredible sounding, beautified,y built, modern and vintage all at once and basically a very good model D substitute at a quarter of the price. Take my money Behringer
Agree... the limitation is what sells me on most synths (see: Timbre Wolf).
Well put Lara8! I agree fully.
Sometimes with synth plugins and iOS synths there is so much going on that I get lost in the functionality. I usually find myself going back to the simpler offerings like what you get in Korg’s Gadget and some of the Arturia iOS synths. More is not always better.
I personally don't think he seems excited enough about this! Maybe because behringer has released so many synths and he's had to work extra hard reviewing them all!!
Daniel R. Rothschild that very well could be. It is hard to keep track of all of Behringer’s offerings these days. Got to love it. It’s a great time to be a synth addict.
7:23 Hell to the naw. To the naw naw nawww. That chorus is the thing! Delays are cheap, easy, everywhere, but a good sounding juno-ish stereo chorus is way more interesting IMO
Yeah, who would switch the juno chorus for anything else?

I actually like the fact it's a chorus instead of delay considering I typically don't like adding time based effects before chorus.
@@ftj4441 Yeah I feel you, I have the OG Minilogue and it has the analog delay which i like to thicken up sounds. But yeah both are useful.
I feel like a lot of Behringer's market uses a hybrid in-the-box + external hardware workflow; one where reverbs & delay are often best left after the synth is recorded in, so that they may be tweaked. Chorus is more of a timbral thing that doesn't extend the release of a sound, so I agree that it makes more sense.
The synth sounds very large. Adding the chorus to an already big sound (especially poly mode) will make the synth very difficult to blend in the mix. It takes up so much space, almost the entire spectrum.
@sbmphr That's kind of how the Junos worked. both buttons sounded great on their own but the combination always sounded weird to me.
Is it me or do boss stereo pedals sound far superior to any on-board effects a synth has to offer. Delay is always cheesy on-board as well
15:30-18:00 he plays some of the sickest sounds I've ever heard, which convinced me to buy one, then proceeds to rip behringer cause they used the word 'Poly' !? who CARES??

7:25 NO ! This chorus is a fabulous addition by Behringer, especially to enhance the otherwise limited 4 note pads, and even you find yourself using it in the video all the time. It is one of the things that what made me buy this synth. The Juno chorus is one of the best there are so this can also be used as a great effects unit.
Yeah i found myself often having it turned on because i love the sudden Stereo spread the sound of the Synth suddenly gets and it's also giving it a bit of a unison sound too. Which adds a LOT to massive pads and basses. Still though... a multi-effect like the one in the Behringer Odyssey would have been lovely too.
That's the kind of sound I bought it for. Great peace of kit.
You ever notice how much noise it adds ? Cant stand it on guitar but for the synth it sounds pretty good, would like more warble from it. Maybe those trim pots on the back can curl the chorus !?
Lack of noise is not the reason why I would purchase analog gear! Burried in a mix the noise of the chorus is probably even good, on the contrary
Rad synth and all, but HOLY HELL; that intro progression at 20:04 broke my heart! Beautiful stuff, Nick!

I would have called it the 4D. Parade sounds fun though.
No but "Para-D" would be the honest name!👍😄
Whether you love this synth or not it really needs to be referred to as the PARA-D from this day forward.

Rocco M Yeah lol, I was just thinking I’d have been pissed in 1978 if this came out shortly after I got my new Moog Model D that same year lol.
If Behringer didn't ease us into this, and put this out first people would have probably been hating on it so hard right now. They needed to win our trust over first with all the other goodies :)
Couldn’t agree more.....I remember thinking circa 2009-2010 “why can’t these companies just make the good and simple synth instruments en masse so that the average guy could buy it?” Thank you Behringer
How much is it with Sweetwater?

Excellent review, as always. And the end credits music is beautiful
Each to his or her own, but I think this synth sounds 100 times better than 95% of the other synths reviewed here. It hasn't got all of the features alot of new terrible sounding synths have. So happy for that. No ratcheting, polyrhythm, shimmer reverb(puke), trig condition etc. Just a good synth for playing.
Anders Carlsson You must know a lot about synths

@@bitley I've got the poly D and would rather have the deep mind 12 . Can't afford both and don't want to get rid of poly D 🤷🏻♀️ Maybe a cheap Korg volca FM would fill the void ?

Thanks for your evaluation and these really nice routing tricks!
The number one man to go to for synth reviews, great work!
UK: The Moog has many rooting options. US: The Mogue has many routing options.
It's still "routing" options in the UK, the US just pronounces it wrong! ;)
Back in about 1983 I was instructed that Bob Mogue himself pronounced it as you would Rogue (which of course...) and then saw this interview years later on TV kzhead.info/sun/iKiHXd1oiINtlqs/bejne.html&feature=emb_logo and got the full story
Sounds fantastic. :)
I've been a bit of a Behringer snob, but hearing that sequence around the 16 minute mark has me sold. Those chords were incredible.
Ordered mine today, can't wait, I've been looking at that synth bootay for a long time
Such a GREAT synth and step forward for Behringer. Congratulations on a great new product guys ! However, I would think that adding patch / program memory, a built-in reverb and a four octave keyboard would have been the cherry on the top. Maybe next model?
If you want a delay just add it in the end of the chain like you did, having delay on the unit is not necessary better because a delay on the unit becomes redundant if you want to use a specific delay of your own choice instead.
Outstanding video and sounds wow
You really made some beautiful tones!
I think the junoesque chorus is the best decision here. Delay or reverb can be added by myself, but to have the whole tone from the machine itself is great 😊
Coolout Coexist yusssss 👋🏻🎱👄🎱🤚🏻
Yep if you get this machine you're likely to have a stereo delay effect. A Zoom CDR will be more than enough for that IMO.
Got mine today. Had a good few hours to play with it. I have a sub 37 as well and a behringer model d but I wanted this for the keys, sequencer and modes. It sounds fantastic. I've never taken to my sub 37 and actually use my bass station 2s far more and prefer them but this for me brings the classic moog sound in a more versatile machine. Love it already.
You've got q sub 37 and don't use it ? How's the bass station 2s?
Great review Nick!
This really does sound wonderful
i think they were right to add a chorus instead of delay. makes it sound abit more like a true poly
Chorus for sure! Delay is on everything and most people have a delay kicking around anyway. A chorus built to complement the synth was a great choice.
Plus delay and reverb generally sound and function best at the very end of the signal path just before going into an amp or recorder. Having on board chorus (instead of delay) allows you to place other effects (such as phaser or flanger) in the chain prior to adding any delay or reverb. So yes, on board chorus probably was the best choice for many setups/situations.
The chorus makes perfect sense in paraphonic mode, because you only get 1 Oscillator per note.
im such a geek for a juno chorus anywhere you put it
Chorus is a perfect choice
@@SLRPS More useful? Everyone has a few delays but how many analog stereo choruses do you have? The chorus sounds fantastic, bring your own delay and you're off!

I don't think Nick likes it as much as I do, but this is truly a great sounding synth and for maybe 25% of a Moog? I look forward to Behringer taking my money! What a great time to be alive and a musician...and a synth addict as well!
He's conflicted, as are many of us. He has the added complication of knowing reps from Moog Roland etc
this is such an amazing underrated instrument. to me, iit not a clone of the mini moog. it is a great instrument, built like a tank and you can get some tremendous sound out of it, if you seat down and spend some time with it. i absolutely love mine.... im very glad to have, it...im gonna keep it. as i said before i do not see this as a clone...its an intrument of its own. i highly recommand this synth. from all those very expensive synths i have, is this very fun and beautiful to play with. price is unbeatable. and it is a nice piece of furniture, too❤️
"built like a tank" = heavy as fuck
Yes, you can get a more fully-featured polyphonic synth for 700 quid. But compared to a Moog Model-D at over 3000, with a similar sound and layout, and all of the extra features, this looks like a steal.
I'm sort of glad it's paraphonic. Makes it a bit different from all the billion polys out there! Beautiful beautiful beautiful sound from this machine. WAY TO GO!
If you want paraphony, you can also open the filters and the amp on a poly, and patch it through a mono synth, using midi out, to trigger the mono synth.
Having heard the Juno chorus I'd much rather have that than delay or reverb, sounds great.
I was thinking the same thing but I would probably buy a delay/reverb combo pedal and an additional onboard chorus will be nice
i think they gave it the chorus because you only get one VCO per note in Para mode, its there to simulate more VCOs
Getting a chorus that sounds right like this one is very rare. I prefer this Instead of another delay that is going to sound just like one I already have.
Cami Lito Yeah, I love the chorus. It’s one of the best new choruses I’ve heard. Much better than the chorus on my Rev2.
Chorus with external in is also a bonus. Shove my Casio CZ-1 through it.
Every video that has this D synth sound going through the 60 chorus sounds like "Sweet Dreams" for me :D

Nick seems kind of mediumwhelmed here but I thought the sounds he was getting to come out of it were gorgeous. Incredibly musical and harmonious.
I have the original Minilogue and love it, but man the sweet sweet sound of this synth... just so wonderfully satisfying and very complementary to the Korg
The chorus adds so much to the sound! I'm really glad that was included.

Thanks again Nick 🙏 Everyone and their mother has already got a reverb pedal or plug-in. a good chorus is welcome. I’m stoked! Looks like a solid build, sounds great, limited functionality to a degree can actually be a good thing. I’m gonna buy me one!

Be sure to keep plenty of Q-tips around for that.
it actually sounds pretty gorgeous, I guess it's a matter of preference, I'd love me some paraphonic lushness
Paraphonic synths are awesome in their own unique way.
I disagree with nick on the delay idea. The chorus sounds so pretty.
blaine walter i think everyone does. he fishes for negatives though, like saying being able to switch off the rad tone distortion section being a disappointment lmao
It seems everyone made an error in priority about this from Uli to the customers, including Nick. 1st - it's not like there's some demand from anyone ever wanting a minimoog to sound like a Juno... 2nd - It was an easy design decision for B using the June-60 they already make. Lazy, but cheap as chips and understandable. Here's the rub, though: A chorus does little beyond helping 1-osc/voice poly patches sound a little bigger and richer; beyond that purpose they have none but to create further smearing of the audio. 3rd - yet-another delay isn't such a good solution either..... _but a phaser WOULD have been ideal._ Why do you think the early Moog modulars were so often sold with that 12-stage phaser from the get-go? It is because a PHASER is better utilized in all aspects of synthesis: Much better to use with the noise gen, and to get 70s vibes from Jarre to Herbie to Clockwork Orange - all in one stop.
Would love to see them transform this into something deeper.
Cot damn that synth is T H I C C !

Beautiful synth beautiful playing
I’m looking at it as a deluxe 4 oscillator Model D that just happens to have paraphony and whatnot. If I get one it will be with that in mind. I was super excited when I saw Behringer’s release video but now that I saw your’s Nick, not as much, LOL. Still I am of the opinion that what Behringer is doing is absolutely fantastic. They are steadily becoming my favorite synth manufacturer. There is so much coming out all the time from them that it’s almost hard to keep track of it all. What more could a budget conscious synth player ask for?
If they hadn't released the D first, this would have been so much cooler. Or they could have done more, to make it clear this is a D on steroids.
how did he possibly sway ur opinion with his negativity!?
That chord progression at 16:45 sold me on it.
I agree I like that better than the stark brass sound that is stock on a lot of synths.
Can't wait for your review of the Behringer K2 especially it's use with external input and patching w/ cables.
