I bought this 1960's "MotoStandard" Steel Trac tractor at a online auction. It was left for dead out in the forest. The owner did not remember when it run last time. It's made in Norway. It has a 4Stroke engine at 8-9hp.
It sure is the most scary, odd and fun machine i got. In Part 2 we are going to test it out real good in the forest on steep hills and in muddy water holes.
Thanks/ Richard at Yesterdays Machinery.
If there was ever a machine that deserves a *full* nut/bolt restoration, *THIS IS THE MACHINE* and it would be an amazing series to watch. I wouldn't care if the videos were an hour long each, and there were 10 or more of them. I hope you consider making this "Norway Bear" new again.
Nice job. You can adjust the valve clearance on those engines but it must be done after you re-cut the valve seats and lapping in the valves. It is done by grinding a little of the valve stem very carefully, also at one time you could purchase a kit which contained a stem cap and a variety of shims. I spent many-many, two-many in fact repairing/servicing those engines as well as many others.
What brand of engine is it?
it is 2 times engine isn't it ?
@@eduardoforestiero5551 No it's 4 stroke
@@strokersteve468 MAG, made by Motosacoche SA of Geneva, the old Swiss motorcycle maker. The heat gun he used is also Swiss, made by Leister.
Yes a pain to do but some multiple cyl engines valves adjusted the same way
This thing is made with everything and anything from snowblowers, bicycle parts, shovels, dustpans, and even a cement mixing pan lol I love it!
It's like a Briggs and Stratton. You grind the end of the valve to get proper clearance. (Maybe?) That is so cool. Nothing like that around here! (Tennessee, USA)
I think you are right. Here in Tennessee also.
Yep
Yes ofc. But there was play so it didn't feel like it was that nessesary at this point. Maybe next service. / Richard
Valve lash is set at 7 thousands of an inch on intake and 11 on the exhaust. You have to file off the end of the valve stem to get the proper clearance.
@Urs Reaaly solid engines - I just binned one as it was beyond economical repair(carb, exhaust, linkages......), so replaced it with a 9hp Honda, and fitted the MAG Dynostart onto it! BTW I have a Gutbrod smallholding tractor.
The long tube taking the back wheels was the connection for a two wheeled hoop with four over cam log lifters. Mine would drag four quite big trees. Loved it. Oh and there was two skis that could replace the wheels on the drag. It was nice to see one running again
Thanks! Richard
Love your channel. Just a thought. Keep pull rope to your arm length so it always leaves the crank. Too long and murphy's law operates. Loose rope always coils onto something and could break your arm or finger if it is the pulley, especially with a kickback. Stay safe.
Hi! And thanks! Yes that is a good advice. / Richard
Seeing you pull out of the garage in that made me smile pretty big. Cool machine.
What fun watching you resurrect this old timer... I cannot wait to see more on this unit... And I really like your shop setup. I'm an old SRABEE mechanic and a 100% DISABLED VET , so I don't mech much anymore, but your shop sure temps me... Kerpnup the good work .. I hope you end up painting that beastie a forest green or something close to it. 👍👍
Seabee not srabee .. haha
@@genem.toddjr.1831 Love the way it looks as is. I wouldn't paint it. Just my opinion.
Wonderful work, its nice to see a real professional not just repairing, but making parts. Love it Dr G
Hi and thanks! /Richard
Great fun video! I worked at a saw mill in N. California, and I worked on the heavy equipment there. They had a 100 foot crawler crane(P&H) that broke a track one day, and the operator crawled off and into the mud on that side. That one track was incredibly heavy, and we had to use a cat 320 excavator to lift it back onto the rollers, then a come-along and sledge hammer to get the new pin back in. Each plate had to be over 500 pounds(227 kg). We also had to build a large platform under the counterweight out of timbers, topped with 1" steel plate, two 50 ton hydraulic jacks, and tip the crane up just high enough to drag that track back under it. A week later, it blew that old engine. Good times! The boss found one online at a ship yard. It came out of an old military ship, was well maintained and ran great. It took 3 of us about 5 days to replace it.
My grandfather worked for Queensland Main Roads. Once one of their Caterpillar D9s threw a track. The track got bound up in the running gear and jammed the pins between the links so badly they had to use dynamite to split the track and remove it!
THAT IS TOO COOL! I've never seen a vehicle like that before! drives like a little tank! WHAT FUN!
Just found your channel and am happy I did! I really enjoy watching you bring the old machine back to life! Thanks for taking us along.
That is pretty cool little tractor you have there. I love seeing these old machines coming back to life again! Good job.
Thank you mate! /Richard
Dude thats awesome, very cool machine
Hi Marty! And thanks. Yes it is the most fun so far. Now i also got the track-tension system working as it should and some more adjustments. You can't drive it thru a deep mud hole or climb a steep hill without a big smile on your face. / Richard, Sweden.
@@YesterdaysMachinery Nice, I'd be suprised if this doesn't go viral. Do a good follow up showing it in action :)
I like it ! would it pull a log out of the woods ?
@@CrimeVid That's what it was built for.. Draging out logs from the steep norwegian hillsides.
Nice to see you here Marty! This thing is soo cool!!
I enjoy the way you diagnosed problems and explain what you are doing.
Interesting machine. Nice job getting it running👍👍
That is one cool machine! As much as I'm for keeping them original, I think it would look really neat with some fenders to help keep the operator clean and safe. The front PTO drive reminds me a lot of the walk-behind tractors that Gravely and several other companies made. With a few attachments, this machine would be more useful than imaginable! Keep up the excellent work! 🙂
Im working my chenal
That’s what I thought it reminds me of an old David Bradley walk behind tractor my grandpa had way back in the day
Hi! Yes but the metal box that you have your feets in helps out a lot more than it looks. Thank you! / Richard
The front end looks like a walk-behind because it is, It's a Motostandard U10 built in Germany with a Norwegian conversion to tracked forestry tractor. There were several companies converting two wheel tractors in Norway back in the day.
@@ThorAlexandre interesting! We had a few companies that made various attachments here in the US, but nothing like this to my knowledge. Recently the walk-behind tractors are gaining popularity again, just a few years ago you couldn't even give them away. It makes me wonder if there's something like this sitting in a barn somewhere nearby. Either way, my interest is piqued. Thank you for the information! 😀
I can remember seeing years ago one with a Front pto driven circular saw attachment. It was sat at right angle to a portable slab track and logs pushed past the blade, the blade head also had angle adjustments on it up to 90° from the vertical.
Sounds interesting! They had many attachments for them. some more dangerous than others. / Richard
..... I was a M60A1 tank crew member in Germany... This machine reminded me of those days in the early 1970's ... H Co. 2/2 Armored Cavalry Regiment- Bamberg Germany... .....BTW, my buddy, a Captain of a tank company is tipping his beer to you from heaven. ..... I could see his smile as you drove out of your shop .....
Great to see this old girl get a new life. Little machines like this can do a lot of work on a farm, are tough as dirt and they don't break the bank.
Awesome! I've cut some trees for home heating in Northern Minnesota, I can see how this beautiful machine would be handy for getting logs out of the woods in the snow.
Yes, if it is tight and muddy or lots of snow this is really great. I will build some kind of bracket it the back that lifts the logs up a bit from the ground in front. That would help so you dont have to drag them in the soil or over rocks. Gets stuck easy. /Richard
Resembles an old Gravely, minus the tracks of course! Definitely a cool find and looks like it’s gonna be quite handy!
@Urs who built the engine? It’s survived well.
Watching your videos takes me back to the days that I was doing similar restorations on anything with an engine. Enjoyed the video!
I always enjoy watching old machinery come back to life!✌😎 cheers from British Columbia, Canada 🇨🇦
One of the weirdest and coolest old things I’ve ever seen, it’s like something I would draw as a kid! So glad you got her up and running. Subbed 🙂
Can you imagine a factory trying to sell us a contraption like that in this day? Very cool machine. It looks like it really wakes up your senses and awareness. When the front wheels went off that last log, I thought you were catapulted over the top but you handled it real good. Thanks for a cool video. I'm going to do some binge watching on your channel.
An absolutely brilliant piece of machinery, fantastic, I'm can't wait for a follow up to see it in action.
Great machine - nice to see these old machines being brought back to life!
This is my favorite thing to do! Keep up the saving of old machines, they have a need of care and love!
Thanks! I will! /Richard
Pro Tip: When replacing Handle Grips, and you want them to Stay on there and not spin or slide off.... Use a drop or 3 of Liquid Dish Detergent, put it on your finger and smear it around the inside of the grip , just a little bit will do and when it drys it bonds well and wont "Glue" it in place .. also makes it easier to remove later as you only have to get some water down in it and soak for a few and off it will come . Cheers .
Please paint the tractor please p paint it it looks awful at least paint the bonnet and maybe paint to trust black please
Pro tip: apply hairspray to the handle bars and inside the grip, they will slid right on and dry quite rapidly, snug as a bug in a rug.

Pro tip liquid loctite will keep them in place forever 😁
I will have to try this myself !!! Thanks !!
What a great little machine and you have done a wonderful job in getting it going.Well Done !!!
Fascinating little restore. Love mechanical oddities !!
G’day from Melbourne Australia it’s great to see different tractors and machines that we don’t have over here looking forward to more great content 👍🏻🍻🇦🇺
Hi! Lots of Australians here! Thanks /Richard
Great video Richard! That makes a nice little crawler, probably to replace one horse in the woods I imagine. Very well thought out machine!
Yes, it is just like a horse but you dont need to feed it when you not using it. / Richard
Very cool old machine and wonderful to see it running and driving again. Nice work!
Well done. Such wonderful old machinery. Thanks for sharing.
You have put out another interesting video. I will look forward to seeing you run this machine out in the woods.
Hi and thank you! / Richard
That’s a sweet rig. Reminds me of a “tank” a friend built from a zero turn mower. 😂
Fantastic. You are a great mechanic
Very nice find an restart. This is really unusual piece of equipment that desperately begged for help. Thanks for getting it up and running and for sharing
What a fantastic little machine
Yes isn't it!" :) / Richard
Great Video 👍 I like this old machinery🤣 To adjust the valves you have to grind the end of the shaft down to the right clearance. Greetings, Stefan
old engine is also on my channel
Yes, but there was good clerance so i just didnt argue with it :) / Richard
@@YesterdaysMachinery 😀👍
Good to see a mechanic who plugs up holes in the engine block BEFORE using the air gun. This little beast looks like it'll be good fun. Wish I had one of these.
I’ve seen just about every kind of vehicle that ever moves - until now. Nice job and thanks for saving a piece of history.
truly amazing what a great project
Thank you! / Richard
This is the kind of machines that I really enjoy watching and would love to have also, I wish I could find things like this, I wanted to build my own track machine, have not found the all the right parts yet, please keep making these kind of videos, they are the perfect videos I enjoy.
Hi! I bet a hydrostatic lawnmover would be very easy to use! /Richard
Neat machine Enjoyed watching you work on it and seeing you drive it around
You are doing a great job thank for sharing Terry from UK
Very cool. I would have probably talked myself into paying a pretty penny for it at auction as well.
Yes, I always end up paying more than i decided from the start.. But when i saw this, i realised that i just can't let it go. /Richard
You ought to see what a friend of mine has and can build he built a dump truck about the size of this machine , and the awesome log splitters he's built , and a truck he called Frankenstein , he could build you an army tank out of a pile of scrap metal ...
@@tomrobards7753 America needs guys that can build anything they need. My dad, me, my son and now his son are gifted in the ''need it--build it''
I would have paid a bit for it this is the kind of machines I love
lol Buy some ear protection at auction too. Mine at 50yo ring all the time none stop
That was an absolute brilliant video. I love seeing these machines brought back to life, it's fascinating. Greetings from England.
Hi! And thanks! /Richard
This thing is just way to COOL ! Hell of A find. It's going to be useful as all git-up.
Loved every minute of this thank you!

Hi and thanks! /Richard
Very enjoyable video. You are a masterful mechanic.
What a most wonderful thing!
Sure is! / Richard
Gday Fantastic piece of history and a great toy to have, it’s amazing with old engines how easy they are to get going, not much really goes wrong and with simple points ignition really makes things easy, looking forward to the follow up video, thanks mate, really enjoyed this video, Cheers
Hi and thanks mate! / Richard
Very nice machine!!!!! Glad that you got it fixed and running.Thank you for sharing.☺️☺️☺️👍👍
Great machine, look forward seeing more of it

Yes, you will! / Richard
Good to see someone that likes to bring things back to life. Nice job you did with it.
I just found your channel. I really enjoy see this old equipment come back to life and useful again.
Unusual looking machine, great repair though.
Yes mera bhi chenal ha
This is so cool I would love one myself Well done, are you going to paint it or keep it rustig? Love the gas tank idea think i will use it myself
Hi! Im gonna keep it as it is for sure! / Richard
That looks like a lot of fun to me, Well done to you for getting it working.
Love these old machines from a simpler time before everything became complicated and electronically controlled.
indeed, cool machine and I can't wait to see the next sight of it. Great job showcasing your efforts to overcome this machine's requirements in resurrection; kudos!!
Dig skulle jag vilja ha som granne! Fan vilka roliga maskiner.
Cool machine, even classier hood! Enjoyed the video and hope to see you continue to tweak this machine back to its capabilities and beauty!!!
Looks fun. You are talented. Love your farm.
I'm betting because the engine was so clean inside with very little baked on carbon build up and those valves with a large unground margin at the edge,. I think that engine has very little run time on it
Yes probably. Looks good and no bearing play. / Richard
Can't wait to see it running on snow.
Yes maybe in a month or so we will have some snow here in Sweden! :) / Richard
What a great machine! Thanks for taking me along for the ride!!!
Glad you liked it 😊/Richard
Pretty cool machine you got there , I look forward to seeing it restored to full glory
Great work! I've found it easy to remove grips to use compressed air with a blow gun. It'll inflate it blow it off. Be careful going over things that will cause the machine to tip forward suddenly! I had a machine simmer and got thrown off in the path! Lucky, after a bit, with no one pressing the throttle, the engine stalled. If it had continued to run, I would have been ran over! Lucky, I don't know that final outcome!
Hy
So fun!
Part 2 will be fun!
Dude that thing is awesome. What cool machine, particularly love the little bonnet/ hood , whatever toy call it. Loved this.
Neat machine. Looking forward to the next video.
Great machine ( whatever it is for )
Thanks! / RIchard
Very neat machine, who made the engine, take care.
The engine is a Swiss made MAG. / Richard
That is the coolest machine ever. Awesome video.
great video. Enjoyed watching you sort through everything.
Great video and channel 👍👍👍😀! Is this the "Beltebjørn" made by Norwegian Trygve Owren? Is the tractor a Motostandard U9 or U10?
Thanks! It is a U10 i think 🙂 Dont know the company name, but is is in Norway! /Richard
Neat little machine thanks for showing how to bring it back to life. Good video
