  • The best way to remember words is context. I ❤dictionaries with added contexts in the definition of each word. When you don’t remember a word, go around it with context as Christian mentions. I do it often even in my native tongue. Don’t be ashamed of not knowing or remembering, it happens to all of us even native speakers.

    • I would argue that "afraid" doesn't mean "Don't know what to do". This is too far-fetched. Intimidated, scared, "shit a brick" or something along these lines could serve as a replacement.

      @matrizaev@matrizaev5 ай бұрын
    • I would argue that your examples wouldn't be easily recalled either. It's more like "cannot do what you want to do".

      @deedeeen@deedeeen5 ай бұрын
    • @@matrizaevIt is clear you have a high level of English. Someone at a lower level will use words that make sense to them, in the moment. Suggestions like scared are more helpful than 5 syllable words like intimidated or idioms which do not sound nice. Put yourself in a beginners shoes. Keep it simple.

  • Great advice for everyone! Even as native speakers my family and I often find ourselves unable to find the 'right word'. Rather than using brain cells to stare at the ceiling and say 'um', I try to immediately circle around the unknown word on known paths. I may not know a person's name, but I might well remember where I know them from, what they do for a living, hair color, etc. Even if a particular word seems necessary to communicate what's on your mind, it often isn't.

My turn around word would be something like this: Market - that place to buy and sell things Bone - the structure of you body… like… your teeth is a(…) Afraid - insecure, with fear Snow - that white flake Farm - big green place with animals Mountain - big huge rock Gold - yellow metal rich people can afford Coat - jacket for cold days Heavy - hard to lift
