On part two of our trip to Audi HQ in Ingolstadt, Germany, we stop by Audi Tradition, the brand's secret storage facility where they let me drive not one but TWO of the most iconic rally cars of all time. Walter Röhrl’s Monte Carlo winning Group B Sport Quattro S1 E2, and the top secret Group S prototype car (that only 5 people had driven previous to me). Childhood dream type stuff!!

The RS002 was mythical during the pre internet days and even until the 2000s. Like Bigfoot, Nessi mythical. Low res and grainy leaked images were out and people debated whether it even existed! 6:11 is the exact reaction people had with the RS002 for decades.

I usually feel like most of the time when pros get new sponsors they play a lot of the excitement, but seeing Ken being baffled over getting to drive these cars and then the genuine happines, when he is actually in them was really heart warming. Great pairing!
It’s so nice to see how genuine Ken is. I’m really going to miss that about him. His excitement and expression about driving those cars would be how any of us would react to someone letting us drive our dream cars. I just love Ken’s personality.

I turned on KZhead subtitles whilst watching the video. When the engine is singing I got "Applause" as subtitle and then "Music" few seconds later. Can't argue with that :D
That S1 E2 still looks soooooooo menacing even now 35 years later. When Ken took the RS e-tron GT for a drift around it, the S1 had this look, this stance of "oh yeah, go around junior, have some fun. You have no idea what i'm capable of". This has to be one of the most badass cars ever made. The sound of that howling inline 5 alone can make most modern cars pee their catalytic converters. The hoonicorn sounds like an angry bear, some cars sound like WW2 fighter planes, some like machine guns, but the S1, especially deep in the woods sounds like something even more frightening than the devil himself, coming for your soul.

Please send my thanks to Audi. As a guy who grew up watching group B as a boy. Nothing has stuck with me longer then the fascination of what Audi did with those cars. I couldn't afford an old audi, but I thought of them everytime I slid a Subaru legacy wagon sideways through a corner in the woods. When I do build my own rally car. It will be with the old audi quattro on my mind. Obscene.....which is exactly what the hoonicorn is. Great video.

I just lost my mind, the Group B Quattro's are things of such rugged beauty, I was lucky enough to see them race here in NZ in my early teens, my father is a sort after Race Engineer and i was lucky enough to be his shadow, The Audi Team, Lancia, Mitsubishi, Toyota etc we visited through the years, but those Quattro's were so suited to NZ they have become cars of Legend. When an official raced rally car went on display at a Car Show a few years back there was so much demand to see it that the organizers were nearly overwhelmed

12:40 They seriously had the blood types of the driver and co-driver painted onto the friggin' DOOR OF THE CAR?! That is just unbelievably awesome. In our current climate of putting safety over everything else and tuning everything down to cater to the lowest common denominator for liability reasons, it's a bit of a trip to see they had a sport so wild (Group B rally) that they felt there was enough to justify painting your blood type on the side of the car. Also makes me wonder if the teams would keep a few pints of their drivers' favored juice on tap in case they needed to start a transfusion in the ditch while waiting for evac. Just unbelievably cool, Group B. The cars, the drivers...insane machines and titans among men came together for the most legendary contest of reflexes, guts, skill, and speed ever conceived in human history...even if only for a few years.
If your on scene medic doesn't speak english or german you kind of need to get the point across fast I guess. Today not only the sport is safer, but also there's a much wider access to fast, long range communication, so you don't need the blood type on the door.

As for someone that has their Audi in the shop because of no heat then a sudden no compression for almost a year, makes me wonder how they keep their old pieces of shit working. Lancia kicked their ass even on the gravel stages. So what if they removed some dangerous ice, any proper government would have done that anyway. '03 Audi A8L For those of you that don't know, that was $70,000 new, reduced to scrap. Audi is unreliable and expensive. If I can prevent one person from buying a used Audi, DON'T DO IT! One consolation, at least it is aluminium scrap.
