► ABOUT THIS HIKE
In January 2023 I hiked for 10 days on the Island of Madeira. I started in the small town of Porto Moniz in the west and headed up the great plateau of Paul da Serra. I visited the 25 Fontes waterfalls and passed through a 2-kilometers tunnel to get to the coastal town of Seixal. Back on the pleteau I headed east towards Pico Grande, the second tallest peak on the island. I slept in a cave and descended down to the remote town of Curral Das Freiras (the valley of the nuns) hidden in a deep valley. I climbed up to the main ridge but was forced to descend down again the next morning due to unseasonable amounts of rain and cold. The next morning I climbed back up via a different route and merged onto trail PR1 via Pico do Arieiro. PR1 is the most beautiful trail on the island. I climbed to the top of the island: Pico Ruivo at 1862 meters. I camped overlooking the valley of Curral Das Freiras with an astonishing sunset. The last day I arrived on the peninsula Ponta de Sao Lourenco, the furthest one can walk east.

  • The amount of effort, planning and creativity, you put into this is incredible! It's amazing that we live in a time, where a single person can create such a piece of art and spread it to everyone for free.

  • You take top spot in my book as the best nature videographer! You are one of a rare breed that will have the courage to take the extreme efforts to creating beautiful, compelling, artistic compositions and putting it altogether into a tapestry of seamless perfection. This all taking place without egoic narration and commentary. Powerful work Harmen! Each of your videos capture such detail from the most finite of incremental to the vast pinnacles of grandeur while following a path that tells the complete story footstep by footstep without saying a word. I understand your stories completely! Just love your work sir! Keep it up!

  • I always marvel at how tranquil Harmen's walks are. There are so many places on this planet where it is impossible not to be invaded by a group of people yakking loudly about the most inconsequential things. In many cases they also have some annoying music playing as they turn a natural outing into some form of popular entertainment. This hiking film captures what can only be called idylls, transitory episodes filled with breathtaking beauty.

  • Wow, this ambient film of your 10-day hike on Madeira is breathtaking! The stunning scenery and your adventurous spirit are truly inspiring. It's incredible how you managed to capture the beauty of the island without any dialogue. Watching this film, I felt like I was right there with you on the journey. It makes me want to explore Madeira myself, and I'm sure our viewers would love to see more videos like this on our channel. Thanks for sharing your incredible experience!
