I appreciate Dr. Dray's expert attention to sunscreen needs for all people.
Totally.
She has Mexican roots thats why she knows about ppl of color need when it come to skin care
Dr. Dray You hit out of the park with this one too !! Thank you so much
Dr., you've done so much to help me better care for my skin-health and I can't thank you enough. Not only is my skin looking better than it ever has since puberty but, more importantly, I think your constant plea for everyone to use proper sun protection has made the biggest difference. I may not be l able to *see* any dramatic changes in my skin just from using sunscreen but, considering what sunscreen is for, I'd say that's a good sign. I'm in my early 20's and I lost my dad Thanksgiving night almost 1 year ago to a multitude of illnesses - but by far the most aggressive illness he had was skin cancer. I know genetically I'm already at an even greater risk for the same fate than people whose family history doesn't include skin cancer but I feel like I at least have a handle on the controllable factors. I've even quit smoking thanks to this newfound concern for my skin. The cosmetic help you've provided me is of course greatly appreciated, but I couldn't in a million years even begin to express my gratitude for the way you've influenced my overall health for the better. It's not every day a KZheadr changes the course of perhaps the rest your life.
Wow! I am a Dermatologist too but I have got a lot from this video! Thank you so much!
Thank you! As a Level II girl, I use the highest SPF as I can get, and avoid the sun between 10 and 2. Life long shade-seeker!
This is SO informative! Thank you so much for teaching us!
Thank you for the details based on that study. I’m pleasantly surprised that they took a look at more individualized recommendations.
I got the Trader Joe's SPF 40 that you recommended ages ago. It works great for me and does not sting eyes, and I do apply it directly to my eyelids.
Hi Dr Dray... Thank you for keeping us educated 🙏 love South Africa ❤
This was a fantastic video! I loved how much data you referenced, I truly appreciate it. 💜
Excellent explanation I really appreciated learning how the sunscreen operates in terms of reflection and absorption and about the specific wavelengths of light and how they interact with the atmosphere and our skin.
Thank you for mentioning different sunscreen’s appropriateness for different parts of the world. I feel like lots of skincare KZheadrs live in hot places (Texas, Australia etc) and applying SPF50+ every 2h can feel a bit extreme during dark, gloomy UK winters!
Exactly, the UV index is 1 at most for almost half of the year where I live. I really appreciate the realistic information.

I love your channel and know that you are very scientific in the way you approach products, so I thought this might be of interest. Thanks!
Well done! So informative and understandable
Thanks Dr Dray this is really helpful and simple to understand. Thank you for making it available to all skin types ❤😊
Thankyou Dr Dray. With love from Kenya.
I hate the claims that mineral/inorganic sunscreens are better around the eyes.. in my experience, these burn and sting exactly the same (sometimes even more) as any other category of sunscreen. It's the inactive ingredients and the overall formulation that causes irritation, not the sunscreen filters themselves. You just need to find a sunscreen that you can tolerate around the eyes, regardless of it being mineral or chemical (inorganic/organic).
I agree with you whole heartedly and have encouraged the same issue especially while exercising outdoors in warm/hot sunshine. Found a product that is working well this Summer: "hello bello" Face + Body Sun Stick SPF 30, 22% Zinc Oxide.Comes in a chubby twist up stick 1 oz. container. Works great round entire orbital region, lips as well as other hot spots.
Same!! I found that my eyes are sensitive to the likes of octocrylene, octinoxcate, octisilate, but it is also a matter of formulation because I have used sunscreens with those filters but did not or barely stung my eyes. I have experienced eye stinging from paula's choice daily moisturizing lotion spf30 and that one is a mineral sunscreen; i still love that product but damm the sting
I’ve stopped putting sunscreen around my eyes and use prescription sunglasses that also have uv protection.
I was using Anthelios 50+ for much more than a decade but since uvmune 50+ was launched I now really begin to feel more snap and radiance. Hope this is not bias. Big thanks for always informing us! 🌺We're so lucky🍀
I've noticed a similar difference with the uvmune on my face too. I like that it's in a small bottle that I can easily carry in my bag.
It’s ok, have not noticed any difference. Quite pricey only 50ml .
This was a very informative and helpful video, especially for people with high amounts of melanin. Thank you!
I’m pretty sure I’m a 1, thanks for this information! Have a great weekend!🥰
A fantastic overview of everything a consumer needs to know before purchasing a sunscreen (in the US and elsewhere)! Super thorough! Thanks, Dr Dray. I think the only aspect you didn't cover was reef-friendly sunscreens--and you've covered that in other videos. As always, I appreciate the bibliography! Interesting too to see all this information in one place--you really see where institutional racism has affected photoprotection in dermatology. More than half of the Fitzpatrick Skin Type scale covers people of European heritage, and even now in the US we have more focus on protection against UVB rays (which mostly affects Fitzpatrick I-III) but not nearly as much data and prophylactics regarding damage from UVA rays or visible light (which affects everyone else). Hopefully this will change soon.
all are reef friendly! she’s said the studies that claimed it was harmful is because they were injecting it into the reef.
Lab Muffin has videos as well myth busting the reef claim. One scientist said if that's a concern for people, they should use mineral sunscreens and wear upf swimwear.
i thought this same thing. hope it changes
I love the Trader Joe’s face and body sunscreen becasue it has a cooling effect and it spreads well it’s affordable and doesn’t tear up my eyes!
I'm 79, so the skin under my eyes is a bit crepey and is darkish. Concealers don't go on smoothly no matter what I try. More moisturizer, less moisturizer, primer, whatever. BUT tinted sunscreen goes on smoothly and does a good job of lightening it. Yay for tinted sunscreen.
So informative. Thank you.
Dr Dray you are amazing. Thank you for you expertise ❤
Dr Dray's really taught me everything about skin care! I started out with Anthelios Shaka Fluid, then I went on to Garnier's Ambre Soleil for both face (with glicerin) and for body and they were burning my face, especially the areas with psoriasis. Got Eucerin's one for sensitive skin and it works wonders on me! So glad that I can wear a chemical one ♥️ P.S.: Dr Dray, please look into the Autoimmune Protocol. I ditched all psoriasis conventional treatments long ago and this is clearing me up!
This isvery helpful since I use different types depending on my day, especially on days that I spend time outdoors! Thank you for your clarifications! Looks like I am phototype III, interesting!
thanks for watching
Greetings Theresa Berg hope u r well n Happy Friday😀👍💜….
You look extra beautiful here doc! ❤
Dr. Dray, I would love for you to do a video on the eyeshadow and lipstick colors you wear using cruelty free brands that are affordable. I think you choose the right colors.
Thank you, Dr Dray! Love your channel! ❤
Amazing info! I have tried so many great sunscreens since discovering your channel- and I totally stand by the Avène Intense Protect SPF50+ with the patented Triasorb UV filter. I love that it protects from blue-light on top of being a powerful protector against all UVA rays. I wear it on its own without moisturizer as it’s super hydrating. It’s very water and sweat-resistant. Plus, it’s alcohol-free, fragrance-free, and silicone-free. Just perfect.
Watching tennis. This is encouraging, One of the players was about a minute later being ready to start cus she was putting lots of sunscreen on her face.
Thanks for explaining the Fitzpatrick scale and all of the other great info and tips here. Happy Friday 🌞🌸
Glad it was helpful!
@@DrDrayzday Always 🤗
Thanks dr, dray. Happy Friday.❤
I hope you’re doing okay dr dray! Live your videos!!!!
For me, it also has to be a joy to apply to my face & body so I’ll prioritize putting it on (and reapplying it.) I’ve been LOVING the Eucerin sunscreens you have posted about. It’s not greasy at all, it goes on super smooth, and offers amazing protection!
Right there with you. I want whatever it is I’m using to feel good going on. I like the eucerin cream as well as Sun Bum, which feels dreamy (I even like the scent, which luckily my skin is ok with).
How is the cast?
@@Night-Shade. both are chemical sunscreens, so neither has a cast.
Which sunscreen u use?
Which sunscreen u use?
This is great and very informative video. Thank you. Don’t forget people who have to spend time for work or whatever reason. There is no such a thing as “Don’t spend too much time outside” for them.
Excellent point! Entire groups of folks must work outdoors year-round. In Texas a U.S.P.S. Letter Carrier recently perished from excessive heat exposure. For that population multi faceted tools are necessary for sun protection beyond skin protection.
This is game changing for me as I have a deeper skin tone, Spf 30 + Broad-spectrum is probably 10$ cheaper. Makes the non mineral more affordable- I can't wear a cast in public
Also re: eyes...if you are using something gentle on your face but chemical on your body, do your face FIRST or wash your hands after you do your body before you do your face. It's probably obvious, but I did it wrong and kept thinking my face sunscreen was burning my eyes, but it was the residue of the chemical sunscreen from my body still on my hands!
Thank you for this video. As a Canadian, I'm thankful that we have a lot of options here. From what I have read, UVA protection here is evaluated nearly identical to the US metric, but formulators have the option to have their sunscreens with a UVA circle to designate the UVAPF is 1:3 of the SPF (the EU standard). If you are based in the US, I believe Amazon Canada sends packages over there. Nearly all the sunscreens L'Oréal sells here have that UVA circle, I highly recommend the Garnier Ombrelle Sport SPF 60 sunscreen if you can get it. :)
Thank you for the advice!!
Dr. Dray, thank you very much. ❤
I use two. I use one that is mattifying like Super Goop Matte Sunscreen and then the Neotrogena Liquid Tinted Sunscreen in medium. I am stuck on this combination. I put the matte sunscreen on first and then top it off with the liquid. It gives a very nice effect. I love your videos.
Hey Dr. Dray! I love Mentholatum Sunplay Clear Water Sunscreen with Color Control SPF50+ but the bottle is so small, and barely makes it to the end of the month. Is there anything similar that is affordable and still has that blue-blurring effect? This is the BEST sunscreen for my eyes, but I really need a bigger bottle, and something affordable. Any suggestions? Thank you for all of your work!
Happy weekend Dr Dray ...see you tomorrow x💙🤩
So many variables!! Arrrrggggg!! Before this video, all I thought I had to do was look for 50 SPF, and decide how I wanted it to look/feel on my face! 😳
I use a chemical sunscreen but it was making my eyes burn, so I recently got a mineral sunscreen to use around my eye area and it makes my skin burn so bad! I can't win lol. Thanks for this super informative video though!
I believe I’m Fitzpatrick 5 - I didn’t think I could sunburn - until I did 😒 Now, I regularly use minéral sunscreen , because chemical sunscreen irritates my skin, and I avoid sun.
Thank you Dr my partner is very dark I rub sunscreen on him he always says he's black he's protected while he's outside all day. I told him your skin is a organ the sun is so strong wear spf
Hi Dr Dray! Great video! I was wondering if you know of chemical sunscreens with uvA and visible light protection? Thanks!
Using Avene tinted sunscreen SPF 50, it's been a few years now. Each time I wear it, everyone is asking me why does my skin look so good and what's my skincare routine. I'm literally glowing. It's irreplaceable for light/medium skin tone who has dry and sensitive skin.
What I find challenging is finding a sunscreen that can be reapplied on top of makeup without ruining it. Sprays and powders are better than nothing, but I find those aren't adequate for preventing burns (similarly for scalp/hair sunscreens as well)
I remember way back when, Dr.Dray’s mom patted in a cream type sunscreen with fingers over her face, the patting motion may work over makeup?
Excuse me…scalp and hair sunscreen..?
Elta MD and dermatologica prism protect sunscreens are light enough that I was able to apply makeup on top of them and it wasn't too greasy feeling. Worked out fine
I saw a video about reapplying sunscreen and how difficult especially if you are wearing makeup on KZhead shorts. The woman in question refused to do it for the same reason you mentioned and apparently, there is a solution in the form of a spray or powder. I would love to send Dr Dray the link to the video so she can analyse it but links don't always work on KZhead. This is because I read the comments for that video and some people are complaining it doesn't offer protection, and some are saying it does.
@@thelearner9984sprays and powder are “secondary” protection. You HAVE to use a cream sunscreen, then make up, go to work and reapply a powder or spray sunscreen at lunchtime and at end of work day. I’m Fitzpatrick I and did that all my life (51 here!), I hate being sunburned. If you are indoors all day, this is more than enough. If you are working outdoors or on the beach you HAVE to reapply CREAM. Forget makeup. Powder and spray are only a light reinforcement of your protection, should never be used as a primary source, it doesn’t offer appropriate coverage.
I like the Avene spf 50+ broad spectrum sunscreen lotion man it's so hydrating and shinny enough for my preferences 😊❤. Next is going to be definitely a gel because I'm intrigued by how will it feel on the skin. Anyway sun protective behavior is essential for a happy and harm free summer 😅. Thanks Doctor for telling us how much safety and caution against sun exposure really mean and how crucial it is for our wellbeing ❤😊.
Avene has some really great sunscreens options outside the us
@@DrDrayzday True but so does USA has quite excellent options too to choose from 😍. Anyway the most important thing is just like you said Doctor Andrea "to choose a sunscreen that yes would be best for us but also we have to be consistent and loyal to it by applying it as recommended".
Dr Dray: you are a blessing for us 🙌🏼 putting your experience and knowledge in a simple way. I have learned a lot with your informative videos. Should make one with Dr. V (Vanita Rattan). 😀 I am always searching the best sunscreen for me, mineral is my favorite. Thanks🤗
Hi Dr. Dray. Please post products you used here especially foundation or sunscreen.
Can you do a video on the best mexoryl sunscreens??
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that gets terrible breakouts from sunscreen 😭 started using the la roche posay anthelios sunscreen a few months ago and it broke me out so badly like I've never seen before. My skin's still recovering from it now
Oh i am same type as you, and i just bought that sunscreen, not using yet its winter and i am 99% of time in dark but i wanted good spf when spring starts, now I am not sure... Have you used some other that you can recommend?
@@tatyana1189 @tatyana1189 I haven't found anything yet 😩 I'm exactly the same. Taking a break since it's winter and we have only like 6 hours of daylight in the UK. But I'm hoping to find something for spring too. I've tried the bondi sands one which I think doesn't irritate my skin but I find it really greasy. I've just bought a Korean Sunscreen (one of the SKIN1004 ones but I can't remember which one). I'm not holding out much hope but I'm gonna start by testing it on my neck and chest for a few weeks and seeing what happens.
Have you tried the Paula’s choice nongreasy sunscreen in the purple tube? It’s great for acne prone skin! I’ve also heard good things about the INNISFREE daily UV defense for clog prone skin and the Eucerin oil-control face sunscreen specifically for oily or acne prone skin types
Hi Dr. Dray!
Chemical and Hybrid sunscreens for me
Hi dray ,my favourite la Roche posay sunscreen for face 😊 xx
My skin is super sensitive. I recently tried the Neutrogena serum sunscreen fragrance-free and it literally burned the skin around my eyes and on my decollete. It took weeks to heal. The only organic sunscreen I trust right now is the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun.
Can you please do a video like this for moisturizer and cleanser?
This is great, thx you!
I’ve tried using a mineral stick around my eyes, but I had to press really hard to apply it and had to rub it in with my fingers afterward. Now I just use a mineral lotion around the eyes, and it works great.
Dr. Dray can you do recommendations video for each skin type? I think that would great.
Dr Dray has an older video on sunscreens broken down by fitzpatrick types.
I use a baby formula stick around my eyes it's the only thing that doesn't irritate them, I also always wear sunglasses.
Ooo which one?

Happy Friday Dr Dray. ❤ Thank you for this video ❤ 1:58
I'm trying to determine my Fitzpatrick Classification. I'm a very pale red head with green eyes. I burn easily, but I can get quite the tan (and freckles)! I had melanoma 6 years ago, and haven't had a tan since! Thank you for your videos Dr. Dray! :)
Sounds like a "2" since the Fitzpatrick scale claims a "1" always burns, never tans. Next time you visit a dermatologist he/she can determine for you. It must be in your chart where treated in past if you need,/want to know.

Dr. Dray, could you share your thoughts on the Black Girl Sunscreen.
Love the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt in ❤ great for humid days. Does not irritate my eyes.
Excellent video 🤓
Using the LaRoche Posay UVMune cause I can get it here in Mexico 😍 Stocking up lol.
It's so good!
It's sad we in the UK don't get a lot of the products Dr D recommends. I like Boots Soltan hydrating facial sunscreen with niacinamide, inexpensive and haven't experienced eye stinging
I tried lots of sunscreens but they all stung my eyes. I found that boots no 7 do a sunscreen stick for eyes and lips. I buy it especially for round my eyes and it's great!
We get much better sunscreens outside the US so it's pretty much a sin to complain lol
Denatured alcohol has not been addressed in your vids.😢😮. Years ago I paid $$$ to have spots removed from my neck. I am seeing these same spots from using eucerin sunscreens. With the attention you devote to sun protection I was surprised this was not addressed. Why alcohol in sunscreens?
Please can you review DR VANITA Rattan's SPF 50 - its mineral based
I find it interesting on finding sunscreen because when i was younger i lived on a farm and i was outside alot and i wouldnt burn often and i was very tan now as an adult i rarely go outside and burn with in 2 hours
Thank you!
Dr Dray - how can we take our sunscreen on the go? Especially for those of us in warmer climates, putting a sunscreen in my bag or car will inevitably melt, which surely could negatively affect the formula (I’m guessing). What can we do?!
Thank you
great topic and happy Friday guys xo
Thank you! You too!
Hi Dr. Dray! 👋👋 What can you say about silicone elastomer sunscreens? Is it true that you don't need to reapply every 2 hours?
If I apply moisturizer with sunscreen on my body everyday in the morning, do I need to shower to wash off the spf before sleeping at night?
I listened twice did you mention whether organic or inorganic sunscreens are better regarding UVA?
Dr. Dray, thank you for another informative video! I use SolaBar sunscreen and I love it. I am a type 2 to 3, and I like to get a hint of color (not like I used to), but with caution and protection. My question is; I use many common name brands out there (spray, lotion) all in range of SPF 25, 30, and 50. Even reapplying as the directions say, and I am still getting burnt. Am I doing something wrong? This happens to my adult kids as well. We like to enjoy a litte time in the pool, but end up miserable sometimes. TIA!!
You're probably not using enough - most people vastly under-estimate how much they need. And not reapplying frequently enough esp if you're in the water and/or toweling off. If you're in or near the water, sun magnifies/reflects and you can get way more burned than if you weren't by the water (or like snow would do something similar.)
would you advise a cap visor for hyperpigmentation? Thx
Good Morning Dr. Dray🌸and to everyone watching😊 Happy Friday!
Morning!
To you too
I'd love to see a list of your recommendations for people with level 3 and higher, who have acne prone skin and hyperpigmentation ❤❤❤
@@HuongTran-tl1izsame to you!😊your cats are precious😻
Thank for another very informative video. You mentioned you can use a powder over sunscreen , that sounds a great option to cover the white cast mineral sunscreens leave and to cover shine. My question is does doing this negate the effectiveness of the sunscreen used either mineral or chemical? You said in a previous video that sunscreen should always go on last.
Sunscreen can go under makeup. Id just recommend applying it thoroughly and maybe atleast 15 minutes before powder, so it has a chance to set up and prevent pilling (:
You should also make sure to allow each layer to dry so that the mixing doesn't change the sun protection.
Needed this video right now! ❤
thanks for watching
@@DrDrayzday thank you for sharing your knowledge with us ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Dr. Dray:) I was wondering what your Fitzpatrick skin type is?
If anyone here is living in europe, we have so many exceptional sunscreens at the drugstore. The one I think is the best is the Garnier ambre solaire “anti-age” super UV sunscreen with hyaluronic acid (not the glycerin version!) This sunscreen is very perfect, it is also the only sunscreen my boyfriend will wear.
Thanks for the suggestion! I wish she would do a best European sunscreens video😃🙏🏻
I spoke too soon, she does have a European sunscreen video from 2019! Although I still would love an update😉
@@karinvancaspel yes! because there’s new formulas coming out literally every year
I really liked that one but sadly it would start to ball up on my skin after about 30-60 min. I think the Uriage bariesun spf50+ cream is quite similar while not balling up and offering water resistance which is a must for me during summer months.
I tried this one, but found it to be too hydrating/greasy/slippery. Nicer with dry weather or dry skin, but not for oily skin or the humid summers in my country. It's not a bad sunscreen, but not for everyone!
Vanicream for face is my holy grail. I’ll put some tinted Neutrogena over it if I have time or don’t want such a white cast but it’s not usually an issue.
Happy Friday Dr Dray ❤

Can you please make video on gel watery sunscreen that are fungal acne safe
I just yesterday bought 2 tubes of Alba Botanica fragrance free spf 50 sheer mineral sunscreen with niacinimide, squalene& vitamin e, oxybenzone and octinoxate free. It's broad spectrum and water resistant for 80 minutes. The 3 oz tube was $10 at walmart. I'm hoping I can tolerate it around my eyes. I've been using the Neutrogena mineral uv tint around my eyes and a chemical sunscreen on the rest of my face, but still getting some of the chemical suncreen in my eyes. I'm tired of the burning sensation in my eyes. I hope the Alba was a good choice. 😊
I just started using the Alba Botanica Sheer Mineral sunscreen about two weeks ago and I love it so far! I’m able to rub it all around my eyes and onto the eyelids, and experience absolutely no sting, watering of the eyes, or discomfort. Almost every other sunscreen I’ve used causes my eyes to sting and/or be hazy. It’s been an amazing product for me so far. The white cast is minimal, it has a slight sheen, and it does not dry out my skin like other mineral sunscreens. I hope it works as well for you as it does for me!
@michaeljack930 thanks for sharing your experience with me. I tested a little on my hand and it seemed to give more a glow than a caste. Last mineral sunscreen I bought was Bare Republic brand. It said light powder finish. I looked like a Japanese kabuki dancer. Pale as a ghost! 😆 This Alba Botanica will be an improvement. 🙂
@@notapplicable9970You’re very welcome 😊 And oh wow! I tried one Bare Republic sunscreen last summer and even though the formula was very nice, it broke out my face. That is my biggest problem with sunscreens.
@michaeljack930 I wanted to give you my update on the Alba Botanica sunscreen to see if you've encountered this issue. I apply the product after I let my moisturizer dry. When I apply it, it's like applying a blob of Elmer's glue to my face! I have to very aggressively rub it into my cheeks, etc, to get it to spread. The same goes for my arms. I've even tried without using moisturizer prior to application, and it is still difficult to spread. Once I manage to get it all over, it does go from white to clear and leaves a shiny cast, which doesn't bother me one way or another. But the application is brutal. I'm tugging at my skin like I'm trying to tear it off. Except for the application process, it's been ok. No stinging around the eyes.
Thank you so much for recommending the Neutrogena tinted mineral sunscreen- has been a lifesaver for me!! And when I wear powder over it I don’t get as greasy during the day. The one lasting problem I have with sunscreen is that every single one I’ve ever tried has that strong chemical smell and it’s a trigger for my allergies, especially when I’m wearing a mask. If they can ever make a good sunscreen that doesn’t have a strong smell I would have no problem wearing it 24/7!
You may like the Hada Labo Koi Gokujyun White Gel UV SPF50. Dr Dray’s discussed it before :). I really enjoy it.
you don't need to wear it 24/7. just in the sun lol
Same here! The lightest shade is the only sunscreen that matches my skin perfectly and I apply it happily every morning. I never thought I would find a product like this.
Hi Andrea, I haven't been posting because I'm on vacation in Norway! You better believe I packed a ton of sunscreen since the sun rises at 3:30 a.m. and doesn't set until 11 pm!
