Fly Fishing the Upper Clark Fork River in Montana

The Clark Fork River flows for 330 miles thru Western Montana and carries the largest amount of water of any Montana River. The upper section of the Clark Fork is considered as the first 28 miles below the confluence of Silver Bow and Warm Springs Creek. There are public parking and access areas and a lot of trout. Many years ago the Clark Fork was basically lifeless due to excessive mining pollution. After a massive cleanup effort it's doing pretty well. Brown trout and cutthroats
are the main trout here.
This stream holds a special place in my heart as it signaled the beginning of my quest to improve handle designs for spin-fly rods. I had been using a flawed design method which contributed to my loosing a nice fish here. After the season was over I developed a patented solution and the rest is history.

  • Nice video, thanks for posting. Was the better fishing just above or below the ponds? Did you try the ponds for an evening hatch?

    • Above the ponds it's called Silver Bow Creek and I'll be posting a video of that soon. No I did not fish the ponds but they are known to hold some large rainbows.

  • I’d throw that rod into the trash and get one I could trust. That was too nice of a brown to loose.
