This short animation is a playful look at hiring practices and the tolerance for difference in the workplace. Hopeful job candidate Buck Boom is dynamic, forceful, confident and creative. But can he convince Mr. Mudgin, the personnel manager, to hire him? You see, Boom is an animated character in a live-action world and Mudgin is not used to dealing with someone who is different. Skillfully crafted, using an innovative combination of live action and animation techniques, this hilarious short film probes stereotypes, prejudices and hiring practices.

  • Wow!! Four years before Who Framed Roger Rabbit!

    • Of course when this came out, I'm sure they were still working on Roger Rabbit anyway since work on that started few years earlier.

  • Doesn't take much to see that Mr. Boom must've been one hell of a nightmare to animate, especially when his movements are over the top.

  • I just noticed Mr. Mudgin is played by the break-pads boss from Tommy Boy. Great short with solid practical effects that Who Framed Roger Rabbit would soon master.

    • dec++ i remember too many job interviews where i felt like a goldfish in a bowl and regarded as fish shit in the bottom of the bowl in my youth. i can remember how racist some hr people where back in the early '70's when i was out of high school and looking for work. even though i was white i always noted the gut feeling of bad racists in me.i've always believed in equal opportunity in the work place without distinction to race, creed, color, origin, sex and handicap( allowing for reasonable accommodation per the US ADA ACT OF 1990.)i noted how hr worked, talked, and acted. also learned how to handle the "open question," tell me about yourself". i would say that one question was 75% of the interviews as their is no prep for that one.now retired with a decent pension and soc. sec amounts each month as a result of good job decisions i made in the 1970's.hr is always the hardest hurdle to get thru in job searching. however, i do think they keep you calling back to weed out sorry people and see how you deal with a challenge and problem solving.going to your interviews dressed appropriate, having a working pen, demonstrating good computer skills and coming alone to your interview goes a long way in being hired. these things worked for me

    • Certainly a type of matte process, hard to tell but they may have done that type that needed to put a black silhouette behind the character that sometimes appears off-registered due to process of having to optically matted these things in. The fact the character has very thick outlines perhaps negates that a bit.

  • Mr. Mudgin: Wouldn't you be much happier in showbiz? Boom: Happier? There's already plans for this new thing called.....CGI that's gonna boom in 11 years and hand-drawn cartoons like me will go out of business due to the rise of computer generated films.....and the only place to go is television. And even then, they'll replace some of it with weird live action kid sitcoms for most of the slots. It's better to get a business in the real world than go into obscurity. Mr. Mudgin: I see your point.

    • Christopher Sobieniak I think they animated him in rubber hose style yet his character isn't designed to look good with that type of movement, but I could be wrong. I'm just going off of previous knowledge. It could also be he looks too 2D while the Movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit had them detailed and angled to look like they fit in with the real world.
