Microsoft's dumps Cortana in Halo much like they have dumped her in reality. Halo Infinite is the new open world Halo game that only barely rises above the past two Halo games. I suppose it's a step in the right direction, but when the series feels exhausted after just that one step you have to wonder if it can even reach the finish line.

    • @@capthavic I've heard this a lot about the twist being blatantly obvious and all, and that's true, but the scene is not meant to be a twist to us. We don't always need an unexpected turn of events to drive a story and keep us entertained. I mean, just look at Star Wars Ep 8 and 9 which had too many random and neck breaking twists, but I digress. The scene is moreso a twist for the Weapon and the spark of the moment which starts an internal conflict within her about if she will become like Cortana, especially with how she was acting when she stopped Chief from deleting her. I like to think the real twist and the part that keeps us interested is right after she asks to be deleted, and Chief decided to give her a chance to live, even if he doesn't trust her, but he wants to.

  • Halo infinite's problem lies exactly within the story. Theres so much off-screen hand waving and "I hope you read X book" that its a travesty of story telling. Halo 5 had its issues with its story of course; something they clearly learned NOTHING from among other game elements, but to pull a kishimoto and give Cortana the Madara treatment ("Oh shit we made her too powerful, we gotta kill her off somehow and give our hero a way to succeed") and make the banished this absurdly sized threat of being able to somehow take on cortana. Not only is this bad writing, but we basically gloss over the fact that the spirit of fire was the one attacking the banished in halo wars 2 all the way till the end, and then.... poof we just forgot about them and now they can take on the INFINITY of all things. 343 gave the banished WAY too much credit. Im interested in the little references they made in certain sections of the story, especially the ending, to the forerunner trilogy. This raises questions that i doubt 343 will answer properly.

My problem with the books is that they dont actually set up game that follow them like people think they do. Did pre-Halo 5 Books set up an AI Uprising? No, it set up the Chief VS Locke Rivalry that never happened. Did pre-Halo Infinite books set up the Banished Curbstomp of the UNSC? If it's just metal, a particular green super soldier could easily snap it open, and have a freed hostage. Another, you know how the Banished are keen to torture, why wouldn't they have a set of cuffs that can shock the hostage at will? Shock, burn, whatever hurts.

You easily dispatch of a dozen of vicious soldiers who apparently could defeat entire squads of ODST/spartans or Marine, and they just chill on the plains like they are on vacations. @aarayfett8349@aarayfett83492 жыл бұрын
    • I just assumed it was a matter of reverse-engineering Forerunner tech, to explain how the UNSC managed to make any crazy science experiment happen. As for why not use the thruster packs and jetpacks from the previous games… maybe in the lore they wanted something that would not require constant refuels? From my extremely limited knowledge on real life grappling hook tech, I would presume Chief’s would use some kind of motor, which would probably be powered by the battery in the suit. And this would make the grappleshot very reusable. And the grappleshot, in game, seems to make Chief ascend to heights faster than the jetpack ever could. And the thruster pack was better for evasive maneuvers rather than height boosts.

    • @@TrueMentorGuidingMoonlight A jet pack or a new jump pack(not the thruster pack) would have made more sense then a grappling hook. Plus the grappling hook is a over used and not really an innovative mechanic. Jet packs have more utility and flexibility, they can made in different ways depending on the game. The grappling hook was a ridiculous idea and was only added to follow the grappling hook trend in games before it.

    • @@aarayfett8349 I’d have to agree with you somewhat. The grappleshot is rather out of place to have in Halo, given how low-tech it is compared to all the other equipment. But I would not bring the exact jetpack from Reach for the Infinite campaign because it was kinda unreliable with its short bursts of “flight” (I admit bias here because I wasn’t particularly good at using it to stay alive in New Alexandria’s falcon segment). Given that the UNSC Infinity existed to demonstrate the UNSC’s technological advancement between Halo 3 and 4, I honestly would have wanted an improved jetpack in the campaign, that would let me fly higher and for longer, possibly a rehash on antigravity packs that the Covenant use. But the multiplayer’s version could be just like Reach’s for balancing, because it was alright back then in that context.

But Chief has been able to smart zoom through weapons since halo 1. It’s been part of the lore forever that weapons connect directly into the spartans headset so they can see targets without directly “aiming” it. The problem some people had with halo 5 is that spartans DID aim it in that game. These aren’t “343 additions”

Everyone else who’s moved out of 2007 can play the other ones. Really simple solution. As far as him complaining the “multiplayer weapons suck” that’s just straight up him being bad. It’s kind of annoying, but, that’s how that is. That’s how ruthless people operate, if you can see through it without getting emotional it’s easy, but the tactic is meant to hit the ego, which then dissolves the mind’s ability to reason with it. It’s a method of tactically inserting self doubt into the enemy. If you read art of war though, one key “rule” is that when one sovereign has already declared victory, they’ve lost. All tactics get seen for what they are, tactics, and become moot. The five pillars or laws of this, one being Heavenly Law, I think, is akin to seeing everything detached from oneself and assessing the situation as if you were God witnessing War. God would be a monster at war, he sees it all, it’s easier to understand stratagem from this view point. It works if you understand concepts before hand, but to those that don’t read that sort of thing, it comes of as annoying. As it is. Because its a bugger tactic, but a tactic none the less. It all depends on those 5 pillars within a mindset. Lose your composure, lose sight of them, and you lose. These tactics are designed to make an opponent do just that. Sorry for geeking out

It just got annoying when even late game bosses still kept acting like the Master Chief was fresh out of bootcamp, after he'd demolished everything in his path. At the very least I'd have hoped to see more caution from them.

  • I’ve been saying forever that the story of this trilogy was doomed when 343 Studios decided they needed to solve a problem that literally didn’t exist: Cortana. Of all the things to try to destroy why would they go after her? Rampancy was a concept they pulled out of their ass and decided to kill her off at the end of Halo 4 only to retcon that and resurrect her as the main villain in Halo 5 only to retcon that in Halo Infinite in the most ridiculous way possible so that we wind up with Cortana 2.0 which we wouldn’t even have needed if they hadn’t fucked her up for no reason in Halo 4. Also if she destroyed Brutes home world why didn’t she just blow up Earth instead of just Sydney?? And finally why oh why does Halo 4 look so much better than Halo Infinite? Sexiness aside Halo 4’s Cortana looks like the one that’s next gen while Infinite’s Cortana and Weapon look like they could have been rendered by the Xbox 360 …

  • Yeah, 343's worst sin since they took over is being terrified to stick with a threat long enough to develop them such that they'll be considered a good villain. Didact or Cortana could either have been good enemies long term. Instead, we've been treading ground, on the third game of a trilogy and STILL no long term threat to make it into a trilogy.... Super frustrating.

    • That’s not a bad thing, all you would be doing is just retreading the covenant again in the end. I’m not saying we can’t have an over arching force but having episodic villains here helps keep this universe more alive and gives the writers more room to try things. In Halo 4, Chief killed the Didact, there is no real need for the Prometheans to come back without him since he was the leader of that cult, so it’s over. Halo 5, we fought Cortana and lost, We had a plan to stop her but plot twist, the Banished showed up. The overarching through line here is simply just this being the personal journey of Master Chief and Cortana (now the Weapon), and their adventures in this galaxy. Every game in 343 has been about how these battles affect Chief and Cortana and how things aren’t as simple as they used to be. Now is this also 343 covering their own fuck ups? Yes, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t make something cool out of it

      @jaketylenol@jaketylenol2 жыл бұрын
    • @@jaketylenol If they were being intentional with how they did it, sure. But in this case, each one has been poorly received, and so the writers room backtracked out of a given new faction being the actual threat. I'm not asking for another covenant or whatever. I'm just asking for consistency of intent, because that episodic thing is pretty clearly not what they were intending when they put 4, or even Guardians, out.

      @pyrosianheir@pyrosianheir2 жыл бұрын
    • @@pyrosianheir it doesn’t matter if it was poorly received what matters is the outcome. Every Star Wars movie the plot was changed last second because the writers didn’t plan in advance what they were going to do, they just had loose ideas and concepts, and luckily it just made one coherent story everyone enjoyed. Hell that’s how Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were written and those anime’s are classics. Same here, minus the enjoyment part for the first 2 games. The narrative as it stands is, Master Chief and Cortana vs the Galaxy, Which if you follow the flow of all 3 games, you realize, that it’s not that big of a deal they keep switching threats. None of the threats get dropped abruptly without serving a story purpose in universe. For instance the Promethean plot led to Cortana learning about the Mantle, the Mantle plot as well for her deep seated hatred for humans and how they treated her and other AI’s (aside from John) led to her taking over the Galaxy, which led to the Banish’s rise to power because Cortana thought she knew what was best for everyone when she really didn’t and nearly got everyone killed, which leads to Master Chief developing trust issues, which without a real friend to help him through it, forced him to face his humanity finally as Cortana wanted him to do back in Halo 4. See? None of this was intentional from the start, but you still have a coherent narrative

  • I don’t agree with the notion that Halo has never had good individual villains before. Truth, Gravemind, and Tartarus we’re all effective villains that compelled me to defeat them. Hell even the Didactic had potential. The problem is that 343 didn’t do ANYTHING with him! The only interesting villain aside from Atriox that they’ve created and they just have him composed in a tie-in comic?! SERIOUSLY?!!

(Perhaps it's because by the time I played it, I already heard about the contraversey regarding how the whole marketing of "Locke VS Chief" was a lie. So I didn't really have much expectations going into Halo 5) But I was actually looking forward to the next Halo game. I was expecting that there was gonna be this epic battle where we would have to fight the Guardians and there was going to be this emotional showdown between Chief and Cortana. But then all this shit happens before the game even begins. It would be cool if they made a prequel (or prequels) game that dealt with Cortana, her Guardians and her Prometheans. But you are probably right in that they will rather write a book detailing these events.
