    • @@pamhenry4150 I want a Chi, but can't right now. I inherited my parents senior female Maltese who was 14, spoiled, pottied & pooted everywhere, hard to groom, tried to bite people & dogs on walks, regardless of size. She was difficult, but I knew she wouldn't be taken care of if I didn't take her. She is 15 1/2 now, doesn't bite cutting nails or bathing any more, still barks at dogs, but doesn't attack, is litter box trained, and we're bonded. It took a lot out of me, but she has given me comfort losing my parents within a year of one another and my beloved Havanese too. She is demanding, but sweet. My point is, if you can rescue a dog (those small fur babies wrap their paws around your heart-Chi, Maltese, Havanese, Yorkie, etc) that may fill an empty place in your heart you both need filled. Good luck to you! 🤗🐾🐶🌻

Toy poodle are also used to find drugs as they are very small they can go anywhere. Mines lived up to 18years, one had brain tumor and the other one a big heart murmur. None was put to sleep as they had no suffering. Have great days and years with your poodle! Give him hugs and kisses from me please! 🌹🌹🌹😘

I've had, bred, trained and hunted with Labs and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Labs are the best if you don't need one for security, most of mine would assist a burglar, the pup I have now is the smartest of all the labs I've ever seen. Show bloodlines are much calmer. Chesapeake Bay retrievers can often be very territorial and very protective of their humans and property.

  • As a senior dog lover, I will always have a well-bred health-wise German Shepherd. I love their intelligence, train-ability and temperament. I love their size, their endurance and loyalty. Most little dogs are poorly trained and often BITE - everyone. With respect to this list, a fish in an aquarium would be a less stressful pet. Glad most of the comments reflect those people who adore these little dogs but they actually take MORE work. If you honestly want a well-trained dog than most medium-sized dogs, the TOP dog for a senior IS a retired greyhound!

  • I’m really surprised that some of these dogs are recommended for seniors. The beagle, cocker, and corgi were all bred to do specific tasks. The beagle and cocker spaniel were bred to hunt and the corgi was bred to be a herding dog. Because of this, they can all be very energetic dogs. I don’t know if a lot of seniors could manage a more energetic dog. They’re all great dogs though, and if you’re up for walking and playing with your dog, I think they would make very good companions.

We take her on two walks a day for roughly 35 mins each. She weighs 12 lbs and loves to be brushed in the evenings as we catch up on the news on TV. I really think the shih tzu is the perfect, non-allergenic, small dog for seniors. They just can't be beat!

    • Have faith in JESUS CHRIST as LORD and SAVIOR for HE SAVES from hell❗️ *What is the Gospel?* The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Romans 10:9 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. JESUS CHRIST can come anytime! Just Believe ❤️ Love you and GOD BLESS

  • Our family experience with our last dog lasted 22 years. He was half Chihuahua and half Jack Russell terrier and a rescued dog from a shelter. We trained him locally as a service dog. I am convinced that the reason Chico lived a good long life and was healthy until the end was the fact that we fed him diced ginger root that we mixed into his regular food after making fresh ginger tea for our own consumption on a daily basis. Chico loved the taste of ginger. It prevented joint pain and served as a natural antiseptic. Fresh ginger root is readily available here in Hawaii. It may be more difficult to find in other places but it is worth a try. It helps both humans and dogs alike.

  • My very first dog (when I was in my thirties) was a crocker spaniel. My daughter named him Duffy--short for Doofus, because he was a goofball. He was adopted on the day before he was going to be put down by the county shelter. I had him neutered (Please, do not think that you are doing your dog a favor by NOT having them neutered: they will live longer, healthier lives if it is done early.) Growing up, we had never had a dog (or even a cat). So here I was, middle-aged and a new dog owner. He was not troublesome, just sweet and affectionate. The only downside to owning a Crocker, is the cost of grooming, which must be done regularly. Duffy lived to be 15, and died quietly in the yard right after I got home from work. I buried him under my peach tree that evening, and (I used to think people were foolish or dumb to grieve for an animal,) but I cried for two days when Duffy died---even now, it is hard to write this, as my eyes are full of tears again, and he passed away more than twenty-five years ago. So my favorite as a suggestion to you, would be a Crocker Spanial.

Could swim the width of our pool (6m) I'd be in the pool pretending to drown. She would dive from side to "rescue" me. She lasted til 16. Getting emaciated. Had stopped eating. Had to have her put down. For weeks I kept a little shrine I'd made with her ashes, photos & candles Grief drove me to 2 Maltese pups now going on 14. We never learn, do we?

    • I would take a shelter dog in a minute (had several growing up), but the shelters here rarely have small dogs and if one comes in, they are picked up quickly by small dog rescue groups with long waiting lists of people wanting a small dog & willing to pay more to get them. The shelters are maxed out with pitbulls and labs, both too much for me. See many good hearted people (especially wonen) with these big dogs dragging them everywhere. Used to be a mixture at shelters, but these big dogs are being overbred and hard to find small dogs even through breeders. • My son and I share a beautiful Doberman Pinscher. Our dog, Bubbles, lives with me and is the sweetest companion. I am like the sweet elderly lady who, when stopped by a policeman, while driving, she immediately informed him up front that she had a few guns of various kinds hidden in her car. The officer asked her if she had a license for her guns and she acknowledged she did indeed have a concealed gun permit. His response to her was, "lady, what are you afraid of!" Her answer, "absolutely nothing!" It is smart for those of us elderly ladies living alone, with cognitive minds, to have protection. So, mine is a big short haired loyal dog. No one, and I mean no one, even my children and grand children come to my house without Bubbles knowing, and alerting all that this house is protected by him. He obeys Robert, my son, and myself without fail. I have NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF, because, if someone was stupid enough to mean harm to me or break in, they would be quite surprised by Bubbles love and loyalty to me. I also have cameras that alert me whenever some one approaches my home. Then I can say, "if I were you I would high tail it out of here before I open my door."

Former big dog peeps here, now Frenchie lovers. *edit after reading some of the replies.. My wife and I are both somewhat obsessive with training dogs while they are puppies. Training them starts the DAY they enter our homes. He's excitable when he should be excited and calm and relaxed for most of the day. With most dogs, there's an element of garbage in, garbage out. Our best friends bought one after seeing ours for his first year and they have had the same results with their dog. I would never tolerate a yappy dog. I can't stand them.

    • @@edie4321 I agree. We’ve had several pure bred dogs, mostly because we wanted certain traits (like good with kids, doesn’t shed, etc.). But we’ve always bought from private, small breeders who basically raise the pups in their homes, a litter at a time. And we’ve had great results from that. The dogs you find at the pet stores come from a living hell, and who knows what you’ll get. They should be banned, it’s cruelty to breed dogs like that. There are plenty of those small, reputable breeders to buy from if you need a dog with specific traits, and would only be a boon to those kinds of caring breeders if the puppy mills went away for good.

The most striking characteristic of Winston is his intelligence...it's as if Winston knows what I want to do before I do it, especially since the passing of my wife. I also have two cats and Winston is very well socialised with the cats...they are all besties. Winston's role is diversified; he is my best friend and companion, he is my security guard; Winston is always near me, giving me that assurance of safety. Other dog breeds I would recommend for older persons are, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers and Labradors...I have seen these breeds with elders and they fit and complement a senior's lifestyle on multi fronts.

      @jonnanr18@jonnanr18 Жыл бұрын
    • @@jonnanr18 Yes, Border Collies do shed their coat continuously; it comes with having a dog with a thick coat. However to mitigate hair falling out all over the place, I brush Winston's coat twice a week...doing this I find his hair does not fall out all over the place, but rather comes off when brushing. My experience is that when you don't brush their hair...it sheds spontaneously. Every dog breed has its pluses and minuses...it's what you are prepared to live with in that dog and most importantly is your connection (relationship) with your dog, does not matter what dog breed you have, if your connection with your dog is not good, then owning and managing your animal could become a nightmare instead of endless love and pure joy and happiness; your relationship with your dog depends significantly more on you than your dog. Winston is a rescued dog and many pet owners I spoke to over the years who owned multiple pets tell me that the rescued animals are by far much more loving, caring and appreciative animals.

  • I’ll be 65 soon, I love giant breeds and will be getting a bullmastiff. It’s imperative they be well socialized & trained which will counter my tendency to under-socialize. They’re low energy and don’t require as much exercise as most breeds do which is a great match for me. It’s so important to match your dog’s activity level to your own. I bet 90% of behavior problems are due to pent up energy. I live alone and the bullmastiff’s guarding behavior is intuitive which will give me some peace of mind. Lastly, they have a short life span of 8-10 years. I think this is an important consideration not addressed in the video. I don’t want a dog that will likely out live me. A senior getting a puppy may no longer be able to live independently or may die just at the time the dog enters its golden years. There’s no guarantee a family member will want or be in a position to take the elder’s pet and elderly dogs are very difficult to rehome. It’s an important consideration.

    • Totally agree, Mastiffs are over looked. People think, because these dogs are giant breeds, they must eat a lot and require a lot of exercise. Our last dog was a Neapolitan Mastiff. She was the most gentle giant. My grand babies would crawl all over her as if she was a climbing toy. She only ate the same as a mid sized dog and only required a short walk around the lake. Mastiffs also don’t shed hair so she was ideal for my husband who has allergies. The only down side is their size. Our Jordie was small, only 84kg (185 pounds) her mum was 120kg (264 pounds) the largest Neo l have seen is a male imported from the US, he was 150kg (330 pounds). They require a home that is large enough to accommodate their very large dog beds; as well as a car big enough to fit them into. When we sold our station wagon, my husband was bringing cars home from the car yards for Jordie to approve. If she wouldn’t hope in, the car went on the reject List. Her favourite car was a Subaru station wagon with two roof vents. The rear one slid back like a limo. She would pop her head out and bark at other dogs as we drove around town. The biggest down size is the VET !!! I am sure they rubbed their hands with glee, calculating how much profit they could make out of us.

  • We have a very active boxer and an active dachshund. Both rescues. They aren’t on the list and probably shouldn’t be if you aren’t somewhat active. But they sure do keep us laughing. Also the boxer is a people magnet who forces us to talk to strangers everywhere we go. We waited until retirement to get dogs so we wouldn’t have to leave them during the day. They are the sweetest companions.

  • Whippet would make a great addition to your list for seniors.

  • I am 74 years, I recently had to put my 14 year old female dachshund. She was the BEST little blessing to my life. She loved people, always greeted anyone that came to visit. I trained her to be gentle as a puppy. We could take food, treats, etc out of her mouth. I'm looking forward to my new puppy anticipated to come home with us by November. Oh yes, she developed a leaky heart valve, we had her on meds for 10 months, 4th of July explosions were too much for her.😥😥
