There has been a long history of solidarity between Palestinians and Black Americans, and these last few weeks have been no exception.
While Israel continues its bombardment of Gaza, numerous Black activists in the United States have come together to demonstrate their solidarity with Palestinians.
These two places are more than 6,000 miles away from each other, with very different histories. So what’s behind this common recognition of a shared struggle?
On UpFront, renowned political activist Angela Davis speaks with Marc Lamont Hill on the history and meaning of Black American solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

There is a strong risk that if the Western powers are seen to condone these actions by the Israeli IDF towards the Palestinians, that rogue nations like north Korea, China, Yemen, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, Sudan and Russia will do whatever they wish to their weaker neighboring states and groups within their own borders. And we westerners cannot criticize nor help them anymore because we no longer stand on the upper ground.

Dr. King just had the most powerful way with his words to paint the portrait of injustice and the pain that comes with it. Thank you for sharing his words. He really was an incredible person. A legend who saw things so clearly and expressed the outrage, but with peace and love. No one like him ever.

Many Palestinians would agree to a 2 state solution - Palestine would be their own political entity that would rely on themselves and their government for everything, as opposed to their current status of being occupied by isreal and having to rely on them for basically everything. Or a single state solution of isreal adopting the people of Gaza into their own state and granting them citizenship with equal rights to their own people, freedom of movement, the rights to vote in democratic elections, food water electricity and internet, etc etc etc… but it has been very well documented that isreal, and more specifically it’s prime minister bb netinyahu is absolutely unwilling to accept either of those options. This is because he wants to maintain and uphold the current status quo of their predominantly white, Jewish ethnostate. You can look this up, I’m so serious. Great guest, MLH, I wanted to hear the voice of the legendary activist Angela Davis, a connection from the civil rights breakthroughs of the 1960s to the horror we are witnessing today.
I found myself on a "Free Angela Davis" demonstration in Paris in 1970 while on leave from the RAF in England, then went back to base with an Angela Davis poster which I put on the barrack room wall. I was taken away by Special Branch (military SIB) and spent a week being interrogated! Happy days...

Angela Davis is correct about hope. It makes us look like fools to cling to it until their is a break through. All systems of oppression hinge on stripping the captive of this human gasoline. Just thinking, US and Israel are very close allies who shares many political views. The Palestinians are treated harshly by Israel and black people in the US seems to have the same policy directly against them.
Israel really learned most of its apartheid policy from South Africa. Because I lived through apartheid here, it’s so easy for me to know exactly which laws come from our apartheid in South Africa! Non whites everywhere share similar histories at the hands of whiteness!

(The situation is terrible that they're in but I always wonder why we support and the same people we support never support us..We did the same with the Urkraine situation too..When has a Urkrainian or a Palestinian in their own country supported black issues..

I don't think you need the exact same experience to feel empathy for Palestinians. Just knowing your own experience of oppression gives you a starting point and then using your eyes. Knowing who fails that litmus test isnt surprising given the history of the coutries opposed to a cease fire.

Yes we blacks and Palestinians have a lot in common. Palestinians today are treated like us 100 years ago with blatant segregation, threats of daily violence by uniformed and average whites who didn’t like blacks, neighborhoods controlled, land chipped away (highways were slapped through our neighborhoods), and the list goes on. Thank you Ms Davis and Mr Hill.
