Angela Davis: 'Palestine is a moral litmus test for the world' | UpFront

2024 ж. 19 Мам.

Citing the late poet June Jordan, political activist Angela Davis stresses the importance of Palestine for other social justice movements.
-
There has been a long history of solidarity between Palestinians and Black Americans, and these last few weeks have been no exception.
While Israel continues its bombardment of Gaza, numerous Black activists in the United States have come together to demonstrate their solidarity with Palestinians.
These two places are more than 6,000 miles away from each other, with very different histories. So what’s behind this common recognition of a shared struggle?
On UpFront, renowned political activist Angela Davis speaks with Marc Lamont Hill on the history and meaning of Black American solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

    • There is a strong risk that if the Western powers are seen to condone these actions by the Israeli IDF towards the Palestinians, that rogue nations like north Korea, China, Yemen, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, Sudan and Russia will do whatever they wish to their weaker neighboring states and groups within their own borders. And we westerners cannot criticize nor help them anymore because we no longer stand on the upper ground.

    • You can't quote Dr. King without me giving you a thumbs up. Here are a couple more relevant quotes "But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. Excerpt from "The Other America" March 14, 1968 "Now let me hasten to say that this is not a concession to or a justification for physical war. I can see no moral justification for that type of war. I believe absolutely and positively that violence is self-defeating. War is devastating and we know now that if we continue to use these weapons of destruction, our civilization will be plunged across the abyss of destruction." From "When Peace Becomes Obnoxious"

It is impossible for them to look at the past since the past is still the present. Since 1948, they have been in an infernal mechanism that no international entity can stop, control or sanction. The Palestinians are victims of the exploitation of the Shoah by the Israeli government. Ethical standards stop at Israel’s borders. In this context, the very idea of the tragedy of Sabra and Shatila or Gaza becomes marginal...

From 1960 to 1990 their activities in South Africa were classified by law as “unlawful” and therefore illegal, but the ANC, as the leading anti-apartheid movement from exile, had great influence on events in South Africa. He has been in government since 1994. Members of the ANC including Nelson Mandela where classified as Terrorists and the ANC as a Terrorist organisation until July 2008 by the United States Government. @Nazlikestoread@Nazlikestoread6 ай бұрын
    • @@jenniferhampton5171 hey Jennifer, this is such a valid question. Many Palestinians would agree to a 2 state solution - Palestine would be their own political entity that would rely on themselves and their government for everything, as opposed to their current status of being occupied by isreal and having to rely on them for basically everything. Or a single state solution of isreal adopting the people of Gaza into their own state and granting them citizenship with equal rights to their own people, freedom of movement, the rights to vote in democratic elections, food water electricity and internet, etc etc etc… but it has been very well documented that isreal, and more specifically it’s prime minister bb netinyahu is absolutely unwilling to accept either of those options. This is because he wants to maintain and uphold the current status quo of their predominantly white, Jewish ethnostate. You can look this up, I’m so serious. If you copy and paste “While refusing to endorse two-state solution, Netanyahu says Israel won’t annex West Bank” into your google or bing the first result should be an article from the times of isreal. (Btw the article is from 5 yrs ago and isreal has gone back on their words and annexed the West Bank, introducing ILLEGAL settlements under international law) So the issue isn’t if the Palestinians want it or not, it’s if the oppressor will do it in the first place. If isrealis stop fighting there will be peace, if Palestinians stops fighting there won’t be any left. 😞 Personally as a Muslim, I believe the Jewish people are entitled to a homeland. Somewhere they can make their pilgrimage to, to learn about their faith. They should stick to the borders that were drawn under the original UN mandate, and isreal should surrender the illegally occupied territory the stole from the Palestinians. Even though the Jewish people have faced persecution throughout history, it is terrible that they are turning around and coming atrocities against another group of people, that is disgusting that they are forgetting their own history. anyway, The majority of isrealis have a dual nationality/citizenship that they came to isreal from before hand, be it America, Poland, Germany, what have you, so they can go back to where they came from. Obviously the people that have ancestral ties to the land should stay. That’s just my personal solution. save Gaza 🇵🇸 free Palestine 🇵🇸

In Israel the majority of the people are against him, but he took control of the entire government and even took out the minister of defense and replace him with the one that he wanted and trying to blame the old minister of defense for the present events that are taking place in Israel, when Netanyahu, the prime minister held critical information from his minister of defense, that was pass to the Prime minister of Israel by the Egyptians President warning him of an attack to Israel.

I'm sure Ms. Davis has the best of intentions and I appreciate her support for the people of Palestine. The Atrocities and Genocide need to end. This is not a test of the system, this is human life, a population of 50% children. May we not consider it a test but a frightening unescapable reality that people have been subjected to and unable to escape, and not just for this month, for literal decades. Very interesting discussion. RIP Rachel Corie. Private corporations have been benefitting from oppression since their formation. • As a Holocaust survivor, University of Massachusetts social psychologist Ervin Staub knows too well the faces that can transform citizens into agents of death. From his study of human genocide across the world, Staub (2003) shows where gradually increasing aggression can lead. Too often, criticism produces contempt, which licenses cruelty, which, when justified, leads to brutality, then killing, then systematic killing. Staub's disturbing conclusion: "Human beings have the capacity to come to experience killing other people as nothing extraordinary" (1989, p. 13). We have to call things as they are. In the words of MLK, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. The struggles of different communities around the world are interconnected, and we share a common bond in the pursuit of freedom, equality, dignity, and human rights for all.
