S1E19: We moved our family of 6 onto a catamaran - but why? Plus a real time update of our plans

We sold it all and moved our family of 6 onto a Lagoon 500 catamaran. What were the reasons we made that decision? How are we and our relationships handling it 4 months in?
In this episode, we sit down to answer some of the common questions we get asked. We discuss our thoughts on why we did it, how long we planned for it, and a check in on how we are doing 4 months into this journey. We also discuss our thoughts on the negative comments we received after announcing we were going on this journey. Plus, we'll give a real time update on what our current traveling plans are, but like we say, our plans are written in sand.

  • The girls in the background waving through the window and then coming out to join during the live update were the best part. Family throughout everything - even the video logs. Awesome!

  • Having cruised on a 43 ft Crowther catamaran in Australia for three years with 4 children, we can tell you the memories you will make will last a lifetime and the closeness/relationship you will have with your children can not happen in a normal life. Our only regret is we did not do it for longer. Make the most of the time with them because they grow up way too fast.

    • This is so encouraging to hear!! And those that we've met that either cruised with their kids or as a kid have said the same. We're praying our family has the same experience.

    • We cruised in the 1990's and there were only 2 other boats with children on them, most people were retired and told us they wished they did what we were doing rather than wait tell they retired. Our oldest son is a skipper on a big cat that takes people out to the Great Barrier reef and tells us he would not be doing that job or even know about it if he had not cruised when he was young. Make the most of it, you only have them for such a short period of time.

    • @@kellytaylor1274 I do think kid boats are more common now than they were in the 90's but in certain locations we come across people that are surprised we're doing this with 4 kids. We get some of the same comments of people wishing they would have done it with their kids instead of waiting until retirement. So glad ya'll and your kids had a good experience!

    • Thank you so much! God has provided so much more than we could imagined, and we are beyond thankful to Him for it! There are many times that we have been humbled by the vastness of the ocean and been reminded of His control over His creation.

  • I absolutely love you guys and had no idea yall have a channel so I’m playing catch up tonight! So happy for yall and it’s honestly always been my dream for me and Tommy and our 6 to do this…it’s not been feasible for us YET. And our babies grew up overnight and now we have 4 grandbabies. So kudos to yall for wanting to spend all of the time in the world with them 🩷

  • This is so amazing. So happy for yall and many blessings and good weather and may the boat sail effortlessly. Also so many questions. Did yall vote on it as family? How hard was it for kids to leave their friends and sports? How is school on the water?? What about internet? Does the schoolwork require internet?

    • Thank you!! We discussed it as a family especially after our charter in 2019 to see what everyone thought, and we were all on board for trying it. We also had check ins and discussions along the way with the kids. Leaving sports was hard, but since we had planned this for 4 years prior (before they were as heavily involved in competitive sports), they knew they would have to give it up in order to go. They all thought it would be worth it though. Friends was by far the hardest for then to give up. All I could tell them was it was the hardest for me too. But we FaceTime at times to keep in touch. School - the younger 3 have a book based curriculum, so I plan out their lessons weekly. It's definitely takes up a lot of space! Morgan (13) has 2 online, on demand classes that she takes and that has been really good and has helped me too in trying to review, grade, etc with all 4. We have Starlink internet! There's some nuances with it, but we have the ability to have internet access virtually anywhere which is huge for safety since we can get updated weather, etc underway.

  • Living on a sailboat is not easy at all and its really expensive. These people who are not sailors and decide to move on a boat cause they saw some KZhead videos never last. These couples will be put to the ultimate test. Seen lots of breakups and divorces from it. 80% dont last more than 2 years.

    • Fair enough, but I respect people who take the shot. Those failure statistics apply to people who start a small business, or do anything hard really. People need to put in their due diligence with planning, but I would never discourage someone from stepping out and trying. You get one trip through life. To die with nothing but regret for never committing to your passion is tragic.

  • Why not? Let me count the ways, you guys think it’s ok to yank your kids out of their lives.so selfish. My parents did it to me living some kind of fantasy of theirs, they fucked me up only time will tell how it works out for the kids
