Here is how to paint rusty metal the easy way. Rather then sending all of the rust off of the metal, you could buy a rest converting primer, which mixes with the rust and converts it into a primer paint that protects the middle underneath. You can paint over it once you are done, or you can just use it as a standalone coat of paint. If you want to paint rusty metal, and you don't care if it looks really good or not, rust converting primer is a great option, and it is a lot faster and cheaper than sending all the rust off of the metal before you paint it. Here is where to get it:

I have used a similar rust converting product like this for years. Hard to believe but it really works well and is very durable. I recommend it.
What did you use?
Corroseal
@@robbiesharp311 I used a product called Plastikote for many years. Scrape off loose rust, paint it on as a clear coat and it dries to a dark blue/black hard coat which I then paint with the car colour. It is stunningly good. I now find Plastikoat was bought out by Dupli-Color. Looking at their website Dupli-Color does a product called Rust Fix which I suspect is Plastikote rebranded. Unfortunately they only sell it now as an aerosol from what I see, though I could be wrong. I always keep a bottle of Plastikote on the shelf and touch up rust whenever it appears. That, combined with an annual Rust Check spray treatment every year means the bodies of my cars never fail me. Hope that helps. On reading further, Corroseal is evidently an identical product judging by the described action, plus it is sold in a small plastic bottle (non-aerosol). That would be my choice for future purchases.
Hell yea! exactly what I was looking for. And the needle scaler comment made it great.
@Cory Miller >He says “Its best to clean the loose stuff off with a wire wheel”. Then goes ahead and paints the converter on the loose stuff. ASE Master since 1978 - Retired
You really need to push and stipple the loaded brush into that rusted metal (rather than just brushing it on lightly) and apply two or three coats of it for better coverage and protection. Priming and painting is then advised.
Woah, that's wicked! I know your channel from watching your mountain bike videos, but I was surprised to see your channel pop up when I searched "how to fix rusty metal", so I could fix my old Ranger.

Wire brushed my frame & front end etc(E350 4x4 van)... then put this stuff on and wanted to see how long it would last. So far its been 3-4 years and only a little has come back through, so this time I'm gonna do it again with Rustoleum Professional grade Oil gloss black to seal it since Corroseal is only a Primer. Even a body shop guy said stay again from those undercoatings cause they are all rubberized and just peel. You can also just mix the rustoleum with acetone to spray it in the hard to reach areas with - 4 parts rustoleum to 1 part acetone ratio, then clean gun with Lacquer thinner first then mineral spirits.
Same thing happened to me with the truck in the video. I ended up putting a coat of rustoleum black barbecue paint over it. This stuff works great as a primer, but a coat of paint over it makes it last a long time.
I remember way back in the 1980s when they are selling a particular paint that contains fish oil, and all you have to do is to use all of the different kinds of steel brush inorder to reach all of the rusted metal parts and components inorder to remove all loose rust flakes and then spray or bush that fish oil-based paint because the fish oil will allow the synthetic resin component of the paint to penetrate right through all of that stubborn and tenacious rust UNTIL IT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH UNRUSTED STEEL OR IRON ITSELF.
Well I am restoring my 1984 GMC K2500 again, 1st time in AZ and now in NC, very humid and salt on roads here. After looking at scores of these rust stop videos I am thinking about Fluid Film or similar lanolin type product. There is a bit of maintenance and you don't want a cat hiding up there, due to it being gooey. From what I see it does a great job of stopping and preventing rust.
When repainting car parts that were rusty a make a date of when i painted it. I know how long it lasts before it needs doing it again. I use zinc primer which should help.
Michael David agreed zinc helps
Wow, looks great.
the beginning was suitable for my other me, we both understood.
🤣😂
I used this stuff and it looked good for a few months and rust spots popped right out again. Mine dried black by the way!
Same case here. What it do is reform upper layer of rust and it is ok for a few months. That rust proofing system is worthless.
I hear u, what I did now was used fluid film. I picked it up at Lowe’s. It sprays a greasy liquid on the surface that is supposed to stop rust from continuing and protects it for about a year. So I would have to shoot another Cote on it next year. U should check it out!
Been using POR-15 for 20 years on many east coast rustbuckets. Always worked for me.

I was going to post but noticed you already had it here lol. Home depot sells a gallon used for concrete etching that is super concentrated and can be sprayed as well for soaking. Rust turns black and it is ready to paint.

I use adcoat by the gallon I use it same on frame but also under the hood on even the partially rusted and painted parts it dries clear on them give the compartment a clean great look Ion hey rusted areas I treat them 3 times to get them to totally stop rusting. I replaced the cap with a tip style cap and squeeze it out on a tooth brush or paintbrush to get all the smaller parts it made my Cadillac look great and I did valve covers and repainted o er it with paint Good panted areas like air cleaner I brushed it on them let it partially dry the criss crossed the brush strokes and looks fantastic when dry co.es out like a faint orange peel Clearcoat

I've used rust converters before but they have never worked properly, they'll convert some of the rust to the black non corrosive stuff but not all of it and thats where the problem is, the bits that arent converted just rust underneath the surface. The best product I have used is Penetrol (not sure what they call it in other Countries) but thats the stuff they use on boats to stop the rust.
Up here in eastern Canada when our highway snow plows start to get rusty they get sand blasted and a coat of zinc paint before they get another coat of snowplow yellow. Makes a huge difference when one accidentally doesn't get the zinc paint and pops rust by next spring. Use it anytime I paint something rusty.
Thanks

Seems identical to Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80. Good stuff!

All rust converters are temporary, you need a permanent paint coverage over the metal; after primer. Most rust converters say this on the container, and mention to paint anyway.
You are right. I think the best thing to do would be to hit it with Rustoleum or with truck bedliner after it dries.

Best car video in 2021 I as can say!
I make my own oil mixture up to coat the frame and floors, 1 gallon can with motor oil and 5 or 6 tubes of h.p grease used for ball joints etc, mix it up til it's gloopy and thick and paint it on, it lasts way longer than the oil guard at Ziebart and when it starts drying out gloop on some more, I do the engine compartment, underneath the inside door jambs and anywhere I won't brush on getting in the car, my 04 Hummer had a couple small spots starting and I completely avoided them with the gloop.
I'm pleased that you've come up with a remedy just like mine. Thanks. I noticed that the frame and suspension parts don't rust when they get coated with old oil and grease just from ordinary driving. My poor old '93 "Jimmy" has a severe rust problem in the frame and the two "A" frames. I save used grease and old motor oil for my mixture. After flushing out the rocker panels, and letting them dry, I poured my solution through the long holes under the door thresholds after I covered the drain holes, and blasted the inside with compressed air which splashed it on the tops and sides, as well as the bottoms of the insides of the rockers. I let them set for a day so the mixture would sink into the bottom seams. One video recommend automatic trany oil, as it contains a rust preventer. No rusted rockers for at least 10 years.
“Look at the debriss bois” 😂
This would be a great application to stop the rust from spreading , buying you time to properly address it later down the road
Beautiful thank you for the video 👍

For heavy rust use a needle scaler to remove it. It's much faster than anything else. When you use the rust converter you should also paint over it to better seal the rust from the oxygen it needs to grow,
Sage advice, always apply an aerosol spray of galvanising paint, then a coat of Smoothrite black afterwards to achieve the best results👍
It slows the rust down but remember.....rust never sleeps.
Great job!!!!! I gotta get some of that stuff!
You should!

I paint rust with copper grease. Never bothered to clean the rust off first. I am too lazy and have a theory that the rust would act as a barrier. The exhaust then produces quite a bit of smoke, on the outside!
@Will Swift It smoked until the grease is evaporated by the heat. It's like over heating cooking oil in pan. I haven't checked, the exhaust hasn't developed a hole or fallen off. The exhaust is 18 year old and 130k miles. There is only smoke on very hot parts.
looks great i think im going to do this then spray a body underliner on top to protect
+kcwkembm that sounds like a good idea to me. This rust converter works well, but it works even better if she put something over it, and that underliner stuff is perfect.
DO NOT put undercoating over rust, even converted. Undercoating is something that has to be done at the factory on pristine metal for it to have any impact. If you apply it over even a little rust spot it will just hide the cancer until its eaten a hole through the frame.
Looks the same as "KURUST" IN THE UK by hammerite . Used it 25 years ago with a top coat of hammerite paint once curred it worked very well but the rust always slowly crept back , the more rust removed prior to treating the longer it lasted before some rust showed threw ......5 years plus so a great product imho
+Noxious Rooster i’m sure it does work better if you sand most of the rust off. I agree that this is a pretty good product even though it doesn’t last forever. I was pretty impressed that it turned the rust and to paint as well as it did.

You’re welcome. This is cheap to do, and it will last a lot longer if you put a coat of rustoleum over it after you paint the rust converter on it. Either way, it will make your truck last a lot longer without rusting.
Yeah the correct way is to grind or bristle the old rust away first and then seal and paint if you want, but that stuff will come back through because you never removed the oxidation,...but if you don't mind going thru that process every year or so, then you're fine

A bit of a jeckal and hyde moment at the start, I thought it was my device piling in 😂👌😁
I own semi trucks and trailers and It's really unfortunate how these companies are misleading the public. All the rust converters/ rust reformers are pure bs. The best method I found to work is getting an angle grinder with a flap disc, getting the frame as close to bare metal as possible than power washing it thoroughly let it sit for a few days to dry. Than roll, spray or brush rustoleum oil based paint apply it very thick. Give it at least 3 passes. Thank me later.
I use stuff called Black Star.. it’s amazing stuff.. how do you say it’s pure bs if you put it on and the rust doesn’t come through again??
What about miriatic acid? I heard it eats away the rust, then u paint it.
@Rick Simpson so after all my research it looks like a product from lock tight called naval jelly is the best, cause it's got phospheric acid, as muriatic acid has a different kind of acid that makes things worse. Would u agree. Also after I pressure wash it all off, do I still need to use alcohol or brake cleaner before I paint using Rust-Oleum oil based..??
@Rick Simpson ok. I only have surface rust so a hammer it too much! I was thinking of a grinder with one of those pleated disks. So just good ole elbow grease huh? Then after I get down to bare metel, clean with brake cleaner, then paint. U sure I don't need a primer first??
@Rick Simpson 03 Xterra 4x4. Exhaust and shocks rusted through, but I'm replacing all that. Frame has minor surface rust, as well as all the bolts, etc. Bottom and frame not too bad.
this stuff been on the market for years am 56 i first got this for my motorbike when i was 16 yep that long a go
I USE IT AND IT ACTUALLY WORKS!!! JUST MAKE SURE METAL IS FREE OF OILS. GO TO THE CAR WASH DROP SOME CHANGE. BOOM!!! PAINT IT ON WHEN IT IS DRY. IT WILL TURN BLACK IN ABOUT 15 MINUTES ALMOST ALWAYS. GOOD STUFF!

This stops or conserve the rust? No need to take off some rust before using this? After this product do you paint?
May have been asked already. Can you apply POR 15 over this and expect good adhesion? And if so, would you want to thoroughly rinse prior to applying POR 15? I know POR makes their own metal prep but I think it's very weak. Great video, thanks!
I don’t know. I’ve never used POR15.
You would use por 15 instead of this not in addition to.
No. You need to clean the metal, then acid etch before you can apply POR-15. You cannot topcoat this with POR-15 or else it will flake off
Trust me that rust will just come straight back. Ive tried all them rust converters, a year later RUST! just get it back to clean metal with abrasives
POR15 buddy
If you don't use a sealer on por15 it will rust, but it still takes many years.
what kind of sealer? whats the process you use?
Brush rust off buy metal rusting+any color mixed paint and later on do undercoat with this. I do every 2 years and its fine :)

Thank U for video. i just got new chevy 1500 from 1990 and there is some rust under. i was wondering can i use this primer on every rusted parts or its just for frame specific?
+basementgainz this paint will work on any rusty metal, so you can paint whatever is rusted with it. It does work better and last longer if you put actual paint over it after it dries. It was intended to be a primer.
hoohoohoblin what about hot metal like exhaust?
How do you get a NEW Chevy 1500 from 1990, in 2017?? 😁
I'm sorry as a restoration shop owner for nearly 37 years I can't agree with your process, you have to remember that if you don't at least get the loose rust off your rails then all you're doing is sealing in the rust which will grow inside quickly and this will become a nightmare. At least take a high-speed polisher with a flat wheel or a large scuff wheel and get the loose stuff off and this actually works pretty good after that
He literally said that in the video to get all the loose rust off, you just didn't watch an hour of him wirebrushing it off.

What about the top surface of the rail ?
Nice talking over your talking at the start😂
Do I have to paint it after? If I'm happy with the black color, can I just leave it as is?
It is best if you paint it. After being outside for a little over a year, mine started getting a little bit rusty in spots. The best thing would be to prime it with the stuff, and then paint over with the rust oleum or something else that is tough.
If you're happy with Black, paint it Black !
Will that wash off in the winter? I live in a snowbelt and salt and water everywhere. Or is it permanent bonded to The metal?
It stays on like paint. I’d recommend painting the primer on, and then painting over it with some rust oleum paint. You don’t have to do much prep. The converter converts the rust into paint, and then the rust oleum will keep it from rusting again.
Wow looks good. I think I'll use this on my truck
It does a great job of neutralizing the rust and creating a paintable primer base. I’d recommend painting over it with something like rust oleum.

A rust converter containing Phosphoric acid? The Phosphoric acid bonds with any iron oxide still present ( Rust ) and changes it chemically into ferric phosphate ( Black Stuff ) which is an inert compound that will absolutely stop any rust coming back
Science! Thanks.
Moisture will find its way, but it will be many years for that metal to fall apart. Metal will contract in winter and will expand in summer leaving micro surface areas exposed to moisture. You can slow down oxidation, but cant completely stop the process

I agree. Tell that to the guy a few posts up that owns semis and trailers. Apparently, just because you own those things means you know more about science. Lol
There is one converter called , Rust Doctor, that you can use the same way, but it can be used on painted rusty metal as well as non painted like your frame. I am a 64yr. old women and don't have as much excess energy as I used to, so not having to take it down to the bare metal is a plus. My question is, can I use this to convert where there is rust and paint? Thank you. Take care.
I think so. You’d have to check with the company to make sure. It should just act like normal paint when painted over paint, and then convert the rest when it goes over rust. Either way, I’d recommend painting rustoleum over it after it dries. The paint is called Corroseal.
It looks really good.

You’re welcome. This should work for that. There are videos of people painting rusty old tractors with this stuff, and it works. It’s a good idea to put some regular paint over it once it dries.
What I'd do. Buy some of that acid that removes rust. Spray it inside and outside the frame. Clean it off. Paint frame Apply a fluid film or another kind of oil like film over the inside and outside of the frame. After that all you need to do is re apply the fluid film once a year. Avoid that rubberized undercoating, it'll just cause the vehicle to rot out faster.
