There is an island full of deadly venomous snakes near the coast of Australia. It is called Carnac island. The snake species that lives here is the Tiger snake (Notechis scutatus). Supposedly there are about 3 snakes in every 25 square meters! That is an insane abundance of dangerous snakes. The Tiger snake is one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Only a few species of terrestrial snakes, like the Inland taipan or the Eastern brown snakes, have a more toxic venom. The origin of Tiger snakes on Carnac island is a bit of a mystery. In this video we explain why. The island is about 10 km off the coast of Western Australia. No people live here, but this area is home to other animals like skinks, birds and rare Australian sea lions.
Snake handler in Australia, '' Ben Avery'' was bitten by one of these a couple of years ago. He was bitten on the thumb, and done everything right, but still had a horrible time, with his kidney's shutting down, and he was on Renal Dialysis for a couple of weeks. Show's the potency of the Tiger's venom.
Yes, this species has a very potent venom!
My uncle was bitten on the finger by a brown slowly floating past a stump in the middle of the river out fishing somewhere at the bottom of NT If it wasnt for the Royal flying doctors he would have died, all is organs were shutting down and needed all the machines hooked up too, it was months before he could be transferred back to vic because he was obviously rushed to S.A. Then more months of treatments at home.. Even if you do survive your body can be permanently damaged by either a brown or tiger and life changing

Wonderful, as always. The footage of the sea lions is amazing!
Many thanks! Great that you love the sea lion footage! :)
Lies again? Trash Garbage Rubbish
Just stunning photography as usual. The colouring of the tiger snakes is wonderful, a truly beautiful snake.
Glad you enjoyed it! We spent only about 6-7 hours on the island, so to find snakes and film them was a tough job!
I know. Why do a lot of gorgeous Snakes have to be deadly? lol But, as long as one keeps a safe distance and respects it, their shouldn't be a problem!
Yet most lethal snake 😢
I hate snake it's killing machine
@@rabiudauda5381 They're just another predator, and don't forget that they help keep the rat population in check. I would rather have Snakes than the bubonic plague.
Sounds like the island off of Brazil with the lighthouse on it. Its heavy population of deadly snakes makes it off-limits to everyone except service personnel for the lighthouse, and scientists studying the snake population.
We hope to get to that island near Brazil in the future!
Island da queimada grande, fica em São Paulo
@@jeffersonpaulo502 Yes, that’s the name of that island near Brazil.
I love Brazil, but a HUGE abundance of 2 step Snakes would make me NERVOUS!! When it comes to venomous Snakes, I get ophidiophobia just as bad as any ophidiophobiac Snake chicken! lol
@@texasrockshillcountry6574 Haha, we love places with many snakes! Makes it easy for us to find them! :)
Best snake channel on youtube!
Thank you so much, we appreciate it!
Have you guys heard of King and Mount Chappell Islands ? They have monster, all black tiger snakes that grow thick and close to 2 plus meters in length. Awesome to see this team still working around Australia.
We know about those two islands, maybe we will have a chance to visit them in the future! Thanks for watching!
I was about to mention Mount Chappell Island, but saw you beat me to it! We also have Snake Island in southern Tasmania, in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, however I camped there once in the 1990s and didn’t see a single snake… 🤣
@@NoName-ds5uq We know that there are other cool snake islands around Australia, it would be cool to visit at least one in the future!
Skull island has the biggest reptiles and gorillas on the planet
@@oldskolacura9798 Maybe next time we will make a video about Skull island :D
Thanks, great video showing us the insight of the tiger snake as usual very well shot.
Many thanks, great that you still love our videos! 🙂
Thank you so much for making this video it’s so awesome and the snakes are beautiful I love their colors and the sea lions are so adorable
You are so welcome! Great that you love our new video!
Incredibly beautiful video! I've been going through some rough days and trying to distract myself with KZhead videos, this is the first video in a long time where I forgot about time and my troubles for a while
Thank you so much! We hope that your days will be better soon, you can check more calm videos on our channel!
I appreciate the surrounding sounds and words for captions instead of a voice and musak.
Thank you, great that you like our style of videos!
Awesome video as usual ! Was on garden island couple months ago and there's loads there too
Thank you so much! Great to hear that there are many snakes on the other island too!
Garden island which you can see in the video has southern death adder and dugites as well as tiger snakes 🐍
I’m writing this comment on a plane to Australia right now. Thanks for giving me a new destination on my trip!
Thank you for watching! Enjoy your trip!
Actually I’m flying to Perth too. Would the snakes be active during the winter?
@@fishincheap1102 They are on such a small space so the chance of finding some is realistic 🙂
I wouldn’t be going to that island it’s dangerous and I’m not sure if they have an anti-venom just a word of the wise
@@ilovebluegrass5493 polyvalent anti-venom for tiger snakes is readily available and Perth is a short ways away. I’m also very comfortable around venomous snakes.
You always produce fascinating videos filled with great information, I always look forward to your latest posts. 👍
Thank you so much for your comment! It is awesome that you love our content! 🙏
The islands in Bass Strate have a separate “island tiger” snake growing to nearly 1800mm, six feet. These live on Muton Bird ( Shearwater) chicks. Thus they only feed once or twice a year, as they are limited in the size of chicks they can swallow.
Yes, there are more islands which have Tiger snakes. Thanks for watching.
Another superb video, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Awesome clip, beautiful snakes!
Thank you very much, great that you love it!
They are much bigger than the mainland Tigers around Perth probably due to the abundance of food, eggs and seagull chicks.
Yes, some Tiger snakes on the island are bigger than those on the mainland.
Really great nature documentary. Thankyou
Thank you very much for watching!
Love this channel...❤
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
WOW, big Tiger at 1-19. They have beautiful scaly heads, and coloring, and oh so venomous.
Some of these Tiger snakes were beautiful! Thanks for watching!
Great Job!👍
Thank you very much!
Their iridescence is really quite beautiful in the right light.
Yes! Thank you for watching!
Presumably if all these snakes descended from an original small group, it would be confirmed in DNA testing? Very sad story about the snake showman. Would you be able to get permission to film on Snake Island off Sao Paulo? Very nice film.
The general genetic diversity of populations around Perth is very low so scientists were not able to pinpoint the origin of Carnac island snakes. We tried to get to the island close to Sao Paulo twice, it is not easy.
thanks, very interesting !
Glad you liked it!
Another really interesting documentary, i live in the UK and have never heard of this island before. I also cannot remember if i have seen a tiger snake before on here, beautiful scenery and wildlife.
Thank you very much! This is the first time we are showing our footage of the Tiger snake, more will come in the future!
You're welcome, i enjoy watching these videos very much. Always informative and entertaining.
Carnac Island is a very small island still in a natural state, there's a bigger much more well known island close by situated in a north westerly direction named Rottnest island. The home of the Quokka and there are also Dugite snakes.
@@peterlangford8240 Many thanks, some very interesting wildlife there.
Excellent video. 👍🇺🇸
Thanks for watching!
Amazing just amazing
Thanks for watching!
Garden island is much the same. Not far from Carnac island, but most of the tiger snakes there, have had their eyes pecked out by seagulls, to stop them from taking their chicks. Its available by land, so it would seem unlikely that the snake population is introduced.
Thanks for watching!
I AM STAYING FAR FAR FAR AWAY FROM THAT DEADLY AND DANGEROUS PLACE
This is definitely not a place for everyone!
The sea lions are so cute! ❤
We agree, it was absolutely awesome to see them from such a close distance!
I note Carnac Island is slightly south of the port city of Fremantle. A nearby popular tourist attraction is Rottnest Island. I have taken this trip. I believe we were also warned about snakes there, but didn’t see any that day. Rottnest is a fun place to visit and bicycle around! Always something to kill you in Australia, but pretty place! I’ve been there 5 times. Always something interesting to see!
Australia is cool and we love that there are many snakes! Thanks for watching!
Snake 🐍 Island Is Certainly Earned Their Name For Fame & There’s Countless Discoveries To Be Made 😮
Thank you for watching! This place is amazing for sure!
Sheeez, what a place to be put for quarantine. Wouldn't be many left by the time they are quarantined.
Yes, if the snakes were there already at that time, it would have been a tough place to stay for a longer time.
Je suis fasciné par la faune reptilienne de l'Australie. Le serpent tigre est impressionnant, il doit faire plus d'un mètre. Des belles images, de beaux animaux. Vous avez raison, sans musique, c'est beaucoup mieux, plus naturel. Merci ! ( de France).
Thank you very much, great that you love our video!
A fascinating story. If the tiger snake is an introduced species I wonder if the ecological equilibrium of the island has changed. Has Carnac Island's seabird population altered between 1900 and 2000 and are the tiger snakes involved? Made me think of the introduction of the brown tree snake to Guam.
Yes, this island has a fascinating history! We haven't found any data about the population change of nesting birds in 1900-2000. Silver gulls nest throughout almost the whole year and some nest more than once. It is possible that the arrival of snakes just caused the fact that more gulls nest more than once per year.
Them snakes would also eat the skinks and each other, cannibalistic etc
The population of silver gulls in the metropolitan area of Perth is much larger now than it was in the past, due to the greater population of humans and their effluent streams providing a rich source of food - landfills, stormwater drains, rubbish bins etc. All of the offshore islands are utilised for breeding and I seriously doubt there would be any evidence of an impact of the snakes on the number of gulls using the island, or the population of gulls in general.
First filming snakes and after this go swimming with sea lions... Sounds like the perfect hollydays...🤗🙃
It was a great working day! Super cool time on the island!
Looks like a Sea Lion vacation destination the way they are chilling out.
Yes, they were chilling properly!
Do you have any video featured the sea snake or sea krait?

My favorite snake
Tiger snakes are awesome!
10km from the shoreline and you call it "Near Australia"

I know you mainly focus on snakes, but those sea lions were beautiful.
Thanks for watching! Filming those sea lions was awesome!
I respect & like snakes as i do all wildlife, they have their place in life, eco system..walk heavy in the bush, long grass, youll never see them, walk lightly and chances are you will & even step on them.

Evolution in progress, snakes changing to survive in a different environment

Not evolution, but adaptation.... totally different.

Do u need permission 2 visit Carnac island? We have loads of seals in Scotland. When my children were playing in the sea a few years ago a young seal approached them it seemed fascinated at their beach ball!!
As far as we know, you don’t. It was so cool to see how playful sea lions can be!
You are not allowed on the island without permission from the relevant authorities.
If anyone in Melbourne know my daughter Lucy and grandchildren, Jemima and Max, please give them all my love. From father and grandfather. England, March, 2024.

Some places really aren't fit for human habitation ! Leave it to the snakes !
We agree, some places should stay absolutely natural!
Wonder how they survive out there without fresh water, and what do they eat without frogs I wonder.
Did you watch the video? We mention what they eat…
@@LivingZoology Not all. I had to go to work, I will watch it later. I just read that its main food Frogs were absent.
Did you see any tiger snakes flaring their necks like a cobra? I have footage of this behaviour from Stirling ranges in Western Australia.
Yes, on the mainland many individuals do that.
What is the food source ?
