About the award:
For the 1927/28 Academy awards, the award was for engineering effects. There was no award again until 1938 where it was called a special award "for outstanding achievement in creating special photographic and sound effects. The very next year the award was combined with sound effects and called the Award for Special Effects. It wasn't until 1963 that the award became the Award for Best Visual Effects (which it is still called today). It was given every year from 1963 to present, with the exception of 1973.

It’s incredible how well the VFX in 2001 hold up. That movie has aged like fine wine.
John Long it’s because they’re not CG! Do always choose realistic FX about computer
Only the effects have held up. NOTHING else about it.
JD Bond 2001 has aged tremendously well, both in terms of story and visual effects. It may be more relevant now than when it first premiered in 1968.
John Long visually it’s amazing. It has held up amazingly. But everything else... other then Hal 9000....hasn’t really. The story is good. I guess you’re right. I found it boring but it’s my opinion. And I do think it’s the most overrated movie in the world.
JD Bond Speak for yourself! The film is utterly captivating. To make an objective statement that 2001 haven’t “held up well” simply because you find it dull is silly, imo. And you really haven’t seen many films if you think it is the most overrated of all time...
The change between 1968 with 2001 and 1969 with Marooned always makes me laugh XD
lmao that beep beep beep and flat actor
Marooned got to show up in Roma for a few seconds. :)
Marooned was the inspiration to do Gravity. Cuarón has said that it is one of his favorite movies
And just look what that movie got Alfonso Cuaron who was inspired by it, two Oscars for directing "Gravity" and "Roma".
What's also crazy is that "Marooned" was also nominated for Best Cinematography while "2001" was not.
You know you've made a groundbreaking trilogy when all movies win best visual effects 3 years in a row
Star Wars and LOTR?
Teteuzinhoop LotR
Nope. You know, that you've made groundbreaking special effects, thats all.
Headbangerr 1983 i suggest you see the movies again. Definately one of the best movie trilogies ever, up there with star wars.
@@oharryc Why should i see the movies again? Because i don't agree with some opinion? I don't have to 😁
I bet when Jurassic Park came out and the first dinosaur was on the scene the whole theater was pretty shocked.
Man I wish I would have been able to experience this movie in a cinema when it came out
@@DevilsBeefCake Same here mate
I did. It was greatness.
I remember sitting in the theater during the moment that the T-Rex was sniffing at Grant and Lex thinking, 'How in the hell did they train this thing!?' A second later I thought, 'Doh, they got me :) After the movie was over I kept thinking, 'Thank God they're dead, thank God they're dead! It was one of my best theater experiences ever!!!
Yes I was, I'm 45 now and at that time cgi was not an habitual thing.
LotR winning it 3 times in a row was just legendary.
And Star Wars too.
Old movies be like: So how can we make the destruction seem brutal? *E A R R A P E*

Linus Chex Mix idk but they be doing this in real life so
ikr it's incredibly good for the 50s
I'm also pissed off by how any of the Planet of the Apes reboot movies didn't win a single oscar for vfx. I mean, look at the CGI of Caesar!!!!!! That franchise deserves the win over The Jungle Book.
@@Mangalex28 I know right? So underrated.
Either WOTPOTA or Kong: Skull Island should win. But too bad since Jungle Book is a Disney movie. MCU fans are pissed because fucking Doctor Drive-Texting didn't win
@@nathwcx8299 jungle book had trees and water that looked real and the animals too. Everything in the movie was created apart from the boy.
@@meethindocha1824 It was more experimental than beatiful. It looked too saturated most of the time, but it sure is very impressive feat to have whole movie being CGI and achieving somewhat realistic shots.
Disney this, Disney that blah blah. As far as I known the jungle book was far more deserving of the award in its year. Planet of the Apes was 2017
For those who don’t know the next couple years let me tell you 2019: First Man 2020: 1917
in my opinion on which shouldve won 2019: Infinity War 2020: Rise of Skywalker

Late 70' to late 80' is basically: Star Wars, Alien, Indiana Jones, repeat.
It's pretty amazing to see the spike in quality for 2001, and then again with Star Wars setting a totally new standard.
Space Movie: Exists The Academy: Is this the best vfx winner?
Except for 1997. Starship troopers had awesome vfx, but it was a distant runner-up to Titanic.
@@thecubeman381To be fair, hard to beat that film with its recreation of the Titanic and the effects gone into recreating the tragic sinking.
I remember being blown away by The Ten Commandments. I can't believe it was made in the Fifties.
Me too when Moises parting the Red Sea was so breathtaking... 😱😱😱
George Lucas, Spielberg, James Cameron and Ridley Scott where like saying who's turn is this year.... Lol
Don't forget about Zemeckis
nolan
"Alright I won this year, who did we say was gonna go next again?"
And then Peter Jackson butted in for a bit and was like "Guys, guys, check this out!" and then after that he pretty much faded away.
The 90s winners so well deserved I am so impressed
This list better captures the historical development of movie than the list of best picture winners does.
I agree! The movies that won for Best Visual Effects are a lot more fun, too!
Woah, The Matrix, The Gladiator, The Lord of the Rings all won one after another? Those are my three favourite movies, alongside 2001 Space Odyssey, which also won hah!
Interstellar is the most beautiful film I have ever seen
Yeah, it was so wonderful.
It was beautiful. My favorite film
yea easily one of the greatest films of all time.
One of the greatest. Deserved an Oscar...
My most favourite movie
The Lord of the Rings: one trilogy to rule them all.
2001: a space Odyssey , hands down, this film is ahead of its time
Me: I want to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey Mom: We have 2001: A Space Odyssey at home 2001: A Space Odyssey at home: Marooned
James Reid lmaooo
2001 at home is just Interstellar tbh
Best thing about award season is Burger Fiction & The Oscars 😎
Thanks for watching!
Usually, but this year’s Best Picture nominees are weak.
@@ForceMaximus84 weak how?
Rum-N-Toke Lame overall in comparison to previous years, especially since I can name at least three movies that were better than Bohemian Rhapsody or Black Panther.
@@ForceMaximus84 good points 🤔
2001: A Space Odyssey is ahead of its time, still holds up to this day.
I'm cheering for the Avengers, because the CGI on Thanos is impressive. But RP1 was pretty awesome too.
"CGI on Thanos is impressive" Thanos looks awful on Wakanda
@@nathwcx8299 do u know how to do vfx? U twat.
@@kokeyshere9413 you don't have to do vfx to know whether they are bad or nah. It's more that Wakanda scene had bad lighting more than Thanos looking awful, he had an amazing 3d model for sure.
@@kokeyshere9413 that's a shitty logic you got there, just because someone doesn't belong and doesn't have the expertise for a particular field, doesn't mean they don't have the right to criticise bad things from that field and in this case, bad CGI when they see one.

Which ever movie wins Best Visual Effects, I'll be happy, because I've seen all 5 nominations.
Is Harrison Ford the actor that have been in more movies that won best visual effects? From this compilation I would say so.
BR2049 will be a masterpiece for decades
Jungle Book did a better job at animal facial expressions than Lion King 2019
Loin King
Jhon Feliciano Sirloin king
5:33 that Return Of the Jedi shot still impresses me to this day. NO CGI, and it still holds up perfectly today. It's just such a cool shot, with the flames slowly surrounding the cockpit window.
So basically just put Harrison Ford into your movie and you've got a good shot at winning best VFX
All of these choices have fantastic music accompanying each scene and the movie as a whole. It makes the effects stand out even more.
Imagine if 2001: a space odyssey didn’t win. That would be the biggest snub in award show history
I've always found it so sad that the movie and the directors get all the credit but the literal hundreds of artists behind the animation and vfx get no credit and like 10 bucks an hour to make these movies what they are
Ready Player One was beautiful. And those space scenes in First Man were also pretty nice.
Christopher Robin sucks for that nomination, also solo a Star Wars story and avengers Infinity war are insane realistic. Awesome
Ryan Gosling's jaw line is a visual effect
As a big spider-man fan I'm happy to see spider-man 2 on here. Not the best year when it comes to visual effects but the movie still holds up and that says something!
To be honest Solo VFX is dope. It’s either RP1 or maybe Infinity War who will win.
None of them won
The Queen Alien from Aliens is my single favourite movie monster ever. It is truly an absolute behemoth of a thing
Every few years the changes are amazing. Great video man!
0:39 Y'Know what other movie this beat out in the same category? The goddamn Wizard of Oz. The Oscars can really get it wrong some years... (Temple of Doom beat out Ghostbusters, Innerspace beat out Predator, etc.)
OddOneOut665 innerspace is more impressive than this predator bullshit
Wheres Golden Compass winning against Transformers
Endgame was more impressive than 1917... like the suits and a lot of stuff was computer generated
The CGI took over starting from The Abyss (1989)
It’s so interesting to see the order. Also funny to see inferior VFX movies like “Marooned” follow “2001” or “Death Becomes Her” sandwiched between “T2” and “Jurassic Park”
First Man looks amazing! I want to watch it
I found it interesting to see, that they are more good movies in this categorie than at "Best Picture".
I'd still love to see y'all do one on Every Best Make-Up Winner! (or Costume or Production Design)
There do exist some very good videos covering those categories.
i dont think "who framed roger rabbit" gets enough credit for its animation
That cut from 2001 to Marooned is hilarious!
3:49 happy to see this gem Bedknobs and Broomsticks, got the recognition it deserves
That was awesome thanks for that
War of the worlds from 1953, still a great film to this day.
0:59 HOW TF DOES THIS STILL LOOKS AMAZING?
Videos like this are what KZhead is for
Whoa fantastic voyage was insane
Fantastic Voyage's VFX really brushed off on Innerspace
Amazing! We look forward to even more exciting movies with brilliant ideas, but we wish not to waste time on mediocre.
The jump to the first lotr movie was insane
This list quite literally shows the evolution of movies
Star Wars Episodes 4-6 all winning VFX awards made me appreciate its timeless visuals even more
same man
Don’t forget The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
it's amazing how many movies about the US winning wwII were made
you know when the best trilogie with groundbreaking visual effects didnt get one oscar like planet of the apes so sad and so overlooked
I just noticed that for 5 straight years starting in 1980, the award went to a movie featuring Harrison Ford (if you count his faceless cameo in E.T.)
Those movies also had Oscar-nominated John Williams scores, with E.T. being the only win.
oh man I dropped a tear on babe (1995). So many good memories of that time. I was 12.
Nice video thnks for the vfx journey of Hollywood
Terminator 2 holds up surprisingly well. Especially when compared to the VERY dated puppetry of the first
I don't know how this ended up in my recommended but I like it
Honestly, Oblivion is a very underrated and great CGJ movie that goes unnoticed.
This is why achievement for Best Visual Effects is my fav award in Oscar.
Mine too
Same, mainly because it’s the category where I saw the most films from there
6:45 I can’t 😂😂😂😂
Puppet Arnold just looked weird when he wasn't making a weird face, like in a previous scene where he pulls some tracking device out of his nostril.
I admit i didnt expect to see Babe in the same category with Alien, Independence Day and Terminator.
Babe revolutionized the mixture of Live animals and CGI mouth...
Here are my personal favorites: Who Framed Roger Rabbit (6:19) Terminator 2: Judgement Day (6:53) Jurassic Park (7:07) Forrest Gump (7:19) The Matrix (7:58) The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (my favorite in the trilogy in terms of visual effects) (8:50) Spider-Man 2 (8:58) Avatar (9:33) Inception (9:41) Gravity (10:16) Ex Machina (10:45) Blade Runner 2049 (11:10)
I wish VFX oscars weren't at all based on popularity or critical acclaim. A lot of movies that are fantastic have not so great special effects, and a lot of bad movies have great special effects.
The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur 1959 (THE GREATEST), The Time Machine, Tora Tora Tora, Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Star Wars, Superman 1978, Alien, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Return of the Jedi, Temple of Doom (My personal favorite), ALIENS, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Babe, Ex Machina, Blade Runner 2049 and The Last Jedi are still the best motion pictures on this list.
Damn... Almost all cameron's movies won best vfx in oscar. That is amazing
aditya wibowo the first terminator don’t won and also true lies got a nomination
@@Locadel2003 That is why I said "almost".
What's really funny is that Cameron was a technophobe. On Abyss, Terminator II, and Titanic the FX people really had to twist his arm to use the CGI. He wanted models for everything.
The part when the doctor’s cigarette falls out of his mouth after he watches the T1000 walk through the bars kills me every time.
interstella and inception are ground breaking films, not just cgi but in general
Crazy that Superman and Alien is only one year apart
alita battle angel could be a contender this year.
Incredible how some 1990s films VFX look better than some other effects now
Very Nice video

What’s marvel doing in the. Thumb GET THAT OUT IF HERE LOL
I just realized that many of these pop culture movies we all love are mostly over 40 years old by now O_o
They should have had “the thing” in here
E.T. winning over The Thing in '82 is borderline criminal
The fact it beat both the thing and also blade runner is just disgusting
"E.T." didn't technically win over "The Thing" since "The Thing" wasn't even nominated (as it should have been). But since "The Thing" was a huge flop that nobody saw and it quickly disappeared from theatres, it was forgotten about come Oscar time especially since it came out in the summer. "Blade Runner" was kinda the same story; big flop, few people saw it, few people liked it. People vote for the movie they've actually seen hence why "E.T." won. But why are y'all acting like "E.T." doesn't have great visual effects? It does. But, yea, if I got to vote, I'd probably would vote for either "Blade Runner" or "The Thing". Although, it's more of a crime that "Blade Runner" didn't win for Art Direction rather than for Visual Effects.
Nah bro. Blade Runner deserved that award in 82. But E.T was much better than The Thing. The Thing was better than Poltergeist too. İt was the second runner up.
Great transition between Gravity and Interstellar.
0:40 bruh
Even after 15 years i dont understand why The Golden Compass won best cgi instead of Transformers, that movie was ahead its time in many aspects
This video start with Terminator 2, it's already a great video !
Judgement day is such an incredible movie and the vfx still looks amazing considering it was released almost 30 years ago, one of James Cameron's finest. Also what's that movie Hugo is about? Never seen it
The 2000s and 2010s are also very impressive
Star Wars was way ahead of it's time.
forrest gump still shocks me to this day
I realized terminator's VFX is better than most blockbuster movies
Spielberg’s philmography basically
I've seen lots of documentary films, movies on space but Interstellar was the movie that makes me feel like I've really seen the "Space" or how it'll be out there in Space.
Star Wars is so ahead of its time.
