    • actually they are teaching the barracuda that "lion fish is a food", so later when the barracuda see a lion fish, it will eat it. Lionfish have no natural predators in their invasive range, so human need to teach bigger fish like shark, barracuda, grouper, etc "to taste" lion fish.

  • Since a lot of people have been asking how it can eat lionfish despite it's venom, I'll resume it here quickly. Groupers, nurse sharks and barracudas have a way to swallow them without getting poisoned : Lionfish venomous spikes aren't always deployed, and rest along the fins and the back of the fish, which means they don't sprout out vertically, they rise up in an angle when the fish exert muscle pressure. Thus, by swallowing them from a proper angle, the poisonous spikes slide back into resting position by themselves, allowing for a safe ingestion. That's what these divers have been teaching reef predators about : how to safely swallow these fish so they don't kill themselves trying to eat them, and since said predators were already aware of the poisonous spikes it helps teaching them (as they're aware of the danger, they're more likely to remember the "safe" way to handle these fish)

    • And let's not forget that venom and poison are not the same. Venom consists of organic proteins that interfere with proteins in the blood. Poison consists of various chemical compounds that can interfere with any number of bodily fluids or tissues. So as long as venom does not make contact with the bloodstream, it can be safely ingested, and the proteins are broken down by gastric enzymes. So remember kids: lionfish are venomous, not poisonous!

    • @ERA CASTE The joke is that it is unconventional in comedy to explain a joke as it reaffirms already noted ideas spread amongst the audience and thus detracts from the time spent making other jokes while lessening the efffect of the joke on those who initially understood it. The humour in this assemblage of intellectual comedy comes from the inversion of this comedic convention, deliberately explaining the joke in an ironic fashion while disguised as a false character that is supposedly explaining the joke. This ruins the initial joke and juxtaposes it with the smouldering wreckage of laughter initially set up, creating an a-ha moment for those who are keen enough to notice it. To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand this joke, and to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand the murder of fish.

  • This reminds me of the relationship between eels and certain species of fish. The eels will go into the crevices of coral and hunt fish. The bigger fish will wait outside the coral for anything to swim out. If it stays inside or if the big fish scares smaller fish in the eel gets it. If the eel scares it out then the big fish gets it. I would love it if barracuda stopped attacking people all together because they formed a relationship with us over hunting lionfish.

    • It is actually based upon the effects the water depth has on the sunlight, only certain wavelengths of light penetrate the deeper you go. (this is why some specialty aquarium lights are blue - to represent the light at a certain depth, for reef critters). If there is a lot of particulate in the water (i.e. dirt and alge, etc.) it will look different (i.e. dirty river or lake water) - but this water is not too bad.

    • Maybe they look at the orientation of the spines and devour them accordingly in a manner in which the spines are going to get pushed downwards. By all accounts, the programme is working so presumably the fish being trained are surviving more often than not (and appreciating the plentiful food source). The venom will be harmless if digested without puncture wounds along the digestive tract.

      @gingercox6468@gingercox64683 жыл бұрын
    • @@gingercox6468 Groupers, nurse sharks and barracudas have a way to swallow them without getting poisoned : Lionfish poisonous spikes aren't always deployed, and rest along the fins and the back of the fish, which means they don't sprout out vertically, they rise up in an angle. Thus, by swallowing them from a proper angle, the poisonous spikes slide back into resting position when the fish is swallowed, allowing for a safe ingestion.
