    • @Vast Emptiness Is he? Is there some subjective chart I don't know about? Saludaev bumped up and lost once to Snyder. But he won titles both Olympic and World before that. SNYDER would probably be considered one of the top 10 ever if not for him. That's who Saludaev has lost to. Saitiev lost to a guy who went 0-2 at the D1s. I think there's a pretty strong case he's already passed him and Medved up. The Slay lose is like Michigan losing to Appalachian State. The Snyder loss is like Bama losing to Clemson.

    • @@scourge8097 saitiev still has 3 golds to Sadulaev’s 2, not to mention more world titles. You also have to remember the fact that 74kg is a much more stacked weight class than 97kg, so it makes what Saitiev accomplished that much more impressive. Not knocking Sadulaev at all though, I like the guy

  • It's unfortunate this thread has to turn into a flame war. Brandon Slay wrestled well this match, and as an American, I cheer him on. But I respect Saitiev for the legendary wrestler he is. It is foolish to predict which country will have the best wrestlers...as the above video shows, even a great "untouchable" wrestler can lose to someone like Slay, a wrestler from Texas of all places, who set his mind on winning. Lets focus instead on keeping the sport alive, no matter where we are from.

  • Slay did what he had to do, find a way to score in overtime. Saitiev is probably the GOAT but it doesn't mean he can't be beaten on any particular day. A great moment for Brandon!

    • This is the biggest upset in Wrestling to me. Slay TOOK Saitiev down. Rulon...impressive(though I just can't put Greco accomplishments on the same level as Freestyle). But Saitiev...is the GOAT...or at least was. Sadulaev may have passed him up. I think Snyder getting another win over him may top Slay, but it wouldn't be viewed like that because he's already beaten him. But that guy is the most incredible wrestler ever. He had the greatest scramble I've ever seen in my LIFE vs a Belarus Wrestler. Wish I could find it, but Sadulaev is giving up a TD. Guy has his leg in the air, he's got him dead to rights, middle of the mat and he scrambles and I can't even describe it, but he's like a cat. Or a lightweight in a 211 pound body. The man is a freak. But anyway, Slay knocked off one of the true greats...though words is, the Russians are still challenging this match!

    • @@coachchaneywrestling Yeah, but it's never that simple as simply comparing their number of Titles? There's some nuance. Brandon Slay...did an INCREDIBLE job, but....he was went 0-2 at the NCAAs. Kyle Snyder was in the way to being one of the all time Greats. Saludaev bumped up ~20 pounds and after one loss has not just dominated him, but the world. Also...as great as Saitiev was,, Saludaev was a better just pure Wrestler. Go watch the shot he defended vs the guy from Belarus. Honestly, the best shot defense I've seen at any level...ever. The scramble, the chain, the offense... I hope Cap can knock him off and make this a better discussion, but I think it's inevitable. I think he's already there....which sucks because I recruited Kyle when he was a Freshman...we offered after, obviously he couldn't sign, but you knew he was different IMMEDIATELY. Not that you knew he'd be THIS good, but him, the kid Phillips from Ohio, Snyder, two best Freshmen I've ever seen over 152. Chris Phillips just decided he was done...Kyle just a kept getting better and better. So...that may weigh on my opinions.

There's also the myth behind Karelin that's a little silly(nobody had beaten him in 10 years or scored a point on him...both untrue...he'd lost the World Championships until one of those famous Russian challenges in '97 or '98 and had also given up points). But beyond that, Saitiev is the Greatest in what is in my opinion the superior style of Wrestling. If Snyder knocks of Sadulaev...after he's now settled into and dominated 97KG, that would be an upset on that level IMO.

  • The first minute is all you need to see on who is the better wrestler, Slay took him down with ease while both guys had zero fatigue. Also, there is no way these guys were the same weight. Slay looks like he weighs 10-20 pounds more.

  • As an obvious example, just take 100m running in which USA had a lead in 90s or beginning of 2000s, but a running school in Kingston (opened by old Jamaican athletes) just blew it up with its athletes. And today, nothing shows that Buvaysar or other exceptional Soviet/russian champ will go to US and offer a competitive advantage.

  • @SiestaBay239 First of all, Saitiev is from Russia, from Chechen lands. The soviet wrestling school was one of the best (or the best) and nowadays different national schools are keeping to have a high level. Imagine that kids from Saitiev's wrestling school will always have a high level training in a couple of years thanks to exceptional teachers. So you can wait as long as you can to see "even" wrestlers.

  • @infestation69 I'm not saying you gotta change everything about freestyle, but in the current system (not the one used back in 2000) if you are ahead 2-1 in the first period, there is no reason to do anything more in the period. If the score carried over, you'd have motivation to continue to be offensively aggressive. The current scoring system favors a lot of low scoring matches. Whoever scores first in the period then gets very defensive just short of stalling.

  • Saitiev is a great wreslter, but he lost this match. A real champion accepts his defeats and learns from, and Saitiev did learn from this. All these russians on here making excuses for Saitiev or putting down Slay are classless and have no clue how to be a real champion or what a real champion is. Slay wrestled well above what was expected, and I'm sure it was because of hard work and dedication. Slay also won more matches at the olympics against other countries top guys.

  • @socalstunner3 I agree Saitiev is better than Slay. But on this day, during this match, Slay was better. Also, you're point about a "technicality" is a bit flawed. While Slay was awarded the gold after losing, he was awarded it because his opponent tested positive for steroids. This is not a "technicality," it is a rule-- and a very clear-cut rule at that. Slay was also tested for steroids and tested clean.
