LEXIVON LX-770 Butane Soldering Iron UPDATE! Long Term Review, Do I Still Like it?

The short answer is yes, I love it. This LEXIVON Butane Soldering Iron is Awesome! I have done some ridiculous things with this device and it handles my ask every time. I know my beloved Weller soldering station could not do what this LEXIVON kit did in the video here: • LEXIVON LX-770 Butane ... . But it's an apples to oranges comparison, so keep that in mind please....!

  • I bought this kit after seeing your review and love it, after my first job somehow the catalyst adapter you put the tips in was damaged (the metal gauze inside came out burnt and bent) , so i e-mailed Lexivon support and they were brilliant, got the new part in 3 days, no cost I am UK, but it does everything you want.

  • Thanks for the review, I love mine! Lexivon calls for refined butane not because of clogging, but because contaminants can ruin the catalytic element which superheats the flame. (butane has a cool flame compared to other gasses) I don't know if Zippo/Ronson fuel is good or not, but it probably is. The only way you can tell the catalytic element is being contaminated by dirty fuel is the tip temperature will gradually drop until it almost won't melt solder. The good news is, the element is separate and cheap, unlike the Weller gas soldering iron. Kudos to Lexivon for selling affordable spare parts!

  • I just used mine for the first time and I’m fairly new to soldering, or rather returning after a very long absence. So far I’m loving it. I used the hot air blower so you can imagine it got pretty hot. I think a lot of people with experience don’t even have to think about how long to let it cool off but for us new folks it can be a little nerve racking. Something I struck upon a short while ago was using the “no touch” thermometers that inundated the market in the last couple of years. Most seem to have a “world” mode where you can measure things like pan heat etc. I’ve started to use that to be certain of the temperature of these sorts of tools before touching them. I wanted to pass it on in case others find it useful.

  • First thing I did was cut the foam in order to not have to take the tip off whenever I'm done soldering.

    @dosdont@dosdont9 ай бұрын
    • I thought of doing the same..... I'm just concerned about the whole tip system sticking together if/when I ever want to change a tip. That has been my only issue/complaint about this kit. A little grease on the threads seems to have solved that problem for me, but if it lived with one tip for long periods of time, it might become very difficult to separate. Have you experienced any problems in this regard?

      @Now-Review-This@Now-Review-This9 ай бұрын
    • @@Now-Review-This Well I just bought it last week so I can't say but you seem to have figured out a solution and I'll probably grab some high heat grease myself and put some on with a q-tip. Other than when I'm welding plastic during a repair the pointy soldering tip is what I use 99% of the time and on the rare occasion I solder plastic I have another one I use for plastic anyway.

      @dosdont@dosdont9 ай бұрын
    • @@dosdont: Me too, mostly soldering. The only other thought I had was using some JB weld to lock the aluminum tip base to the plastic portion of the body, just anything really that could lock up those threads at that point should solve the problem forever. A little grease on the knurled nut threads has worked great for me, so far. But a little epoxy on that lower section would solve the problem permanently. Keep me updated please, I'd really like to know if you have any issues and too how you solved them. Cheers 🍻

  • Thanks for the review. Newbie here...I just received mine. How much butane do you add upon filling for the first time?

    @anthonyviscusi4042@anthonyviscusi40422 жыл бұрын
    • No problem, it's just like filling a butane lighter. It's completely full when it begins to blow back out of the fill port. You'll see it, it'll take the butane until all of a sudden it begins to leak/blow back on you. You don't have to fill it that full, but the point is that tank will only hold just so much and when it's completely full, you'll know it. The tank will simply bleed off what it cannot hold at which point it is at it's maximum full capacity. Cheers 🍻.

    • I don't know, but it's not very good. The very first time I used this for a job was on a tractor repair. Here's the link if you care to see, it's in video 3 somewhere: kzhead.info/sun/ZMdsmZqHi52pqas/bejne.html I remember not being able to melt the stuff without flux. I only use silver bearing solder for my projects, the stuff that comes with this kit is definitely not that! I threw it away after that tractor video was complete. I still totally love this kit though, even with garbage solder. Cheers 🍻

But a few times a month is about how I've been using mine, and some large projects in between with more frequent use. But it's still my goto for all of my soldering needs, and I still love this thing! One latch has broken on the plastic case now, the other latch feels like it's not far behind. But otherwise it's all still working like new. Cheers 🍻

  • How long does it last until you need to refill with butane?

    @Gregtman502@Gregtman502Күн бұрын
    • I don't know, I've never timed it. But it would be much less time on high than on low. I've done several projects with it between refills. One full tank lasts a good long time.

  • Would it be safe for small components on small PCBs? I like to build small gadgets and circuits..

    @HappyHermitt@HappyHermitt2 жыл бұрын
    • I would say not. Sure, you could solder some components no problem, but the exhaust jet on the tip @1:45 will inevitably end up melting some nearby piece or part. A traditional electric iron or soldering station I think would be much better suited for PCB work. Cheers 🍻.

  • If you ain't squinting down through a pretty powerful microscope at the thing you're trying to solder, any old farty iron will probably do the job reasonably. . However, when you are squinting down a pretty powerful microscope just to see the thing you are going to solder, then most "soldering irons" are going to look like telephone poles. The ones who discover which irons work in those scenarios aren't keen to share because thats their livelihood. Take a look at this: . That full-stop ^. That's the pad that's burnt & you now have to reflow it. However - just for the giggles - the actual real-life configuration is this: ......................... Pad 7 & 8 are burnt up. Reflow/solder pad 7 & 8 using your iron. It's going to look like a telephone pole under the magnification you will need & that roll of 1mm or 0.8mm solder will look like an oil tanker trying to cram itself up the local stream. Technology moved on & smallered. Very few irons kept up. 0.25mm solder will be huge & a test in this common scenario. That's the reality.

  • My 60w plug in $8 iron from amazon gets hotter i just side by sided them and the $8 one was much faster at a tinning the end of some 8g thhn. Dont get me wrong i prefer the butane one as most my soldering is done inside my car, but the torch is slower, its been riding around with me lighting cigarettes and earlier i used it to braze some 14g to washers. And it can do shrink tube just holding it up to the exhaust but the other one was hotter
