  • I wonder if New Shepard has the margins to land with the capsule on top? Is this something to work towards in the future? I imagine it would allow for much faster turnaround time!

    @KsNewSpace@KsNewSpace Жыл бұрын
    • You need safety redundancy. That comes with the current method. Also the G-Forces at landing would be massive.

      @RogerM88@RogerM88 Жыл бұрын
    • Not to mention the CM would be higher at landing with the capsule atop a mostly empty booster. It's much better for reusability to separate the capsule so the reentry and landing stresses aren't all handled by the rocket stage.

      @brianfoss571@brianfoss571 Жыл бұрын
    • Also rockets are not (and never will be) subsonic commercial airliners. Turning one around in 2-3 hours would be an extremely tall order, and it's unlikely there will ever be enough annual passengers to create a business case for multiple flights per day on the same vehicle.

      @brianfoss571@brianfoss571 Жыл бұрын
    • @@brianfoss571 There are hundreds of flights per day to jump out of a plane and skydive... a few flights er day to experience a rocket launch, space and zero-G does not seem fetched to me. The CM being higher is better for landing as it gives the engines more leverage on their vectoring. Higher rentry and landing stresses are a joke compared to the actual launch. A rocket lifts several times its own weight with multiple Gs on the way up. Coming down is a piece of cake.

ULA and Blue Origin teams had just completed a test stand flight engine readiness review. If everything goes well with the acceptance tests, those two flight engines will then be shipped to ULA for integration with Vulcan. Also, I guess you didn't see the tweet from Tory Bruno showing photos of the flight engines. So, he knows where his engines are and how far along they are.

  • It is so offensive to call these space tourists 'astronauts'. It's an afront to all real astronauts. It's equivalent to calling yourself a 'pilot' if you are a passenger in a plane.

    @planktonau@planktonau Жыл бұрын
    • Agreed. There is so much extensive training, study and requirements for someone to become an astronaut. It's a title that is earned, not bought. I'm not surprised that Bezos has put it up for sale in his company though.

      @AniWho268@AniWho268 Жыл бұрын
    • most astronauts don't have to pilot the spacecraft. You want to take away the astronaut label from all the people went to the space station, who weren't pilots? Who actually cares if the astronaut label is watered down? People can find another way to big note themselves

      @I_dont_want_an_at@I_dont_want_an_at Жыл бұрын
    • Really the distinction now is between professional astronaut and not professional astronaut. There does seem to be considerable debate and gate keeping over the term astronaut though, I suppose that because up until recently you had to be useful to go to space, unless you were a US politician who put yourself on a shuttle crew.
