Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

  • Hey Jach, not sure if you will see this or not but this is a good tip. Concerning your leg cramps, instant relief is a drink of tonic water. A couple of mouthfuls of tonic water brings almost instant relief from a leg cramp attack. I got this directly from my doctor. Yes the mix in a gin and tonic! Heck add the gin if you want still works! Also this tip is from my wife and that is a magnesium tablet. They seem to help me if I think my legs may cramp at night after a busy day with physical exercise.

  • We started planting about 2 1/2 weeks ago here in Central Iowa. Good to see you all getting in the fields. Glad we did before all the storms. We live in Western Iowa but crop land is in Central IA. We dodged some tornadoes last Friday afternoon and evening. It’s something we are used to doing, but these storms were just all around us. We have a good 3 dozen separate friends and family groups that were in the path of the tornadoes from Lincoln NE all the way to Ames IA. Plus family in Southern Iowa in Creston area. Miraculously none of them sustained severe damage. Some trees down, power lines down, some missing shingles and hail damage. But no direct tornado hit. God definitely watched over so many of us. When you are getting texts, video and calls from that many different people for hours cuz of the storm it is so draining. Was in my first tornado at age 12 with my siblings and we were home alone when it hit our farm. This was 1984 so life was different then. But we made it through that and I added a couple other tornadoes to my resume since.

  • Thanks for another great video Zach. It was informative and interesting and enjoyable. Thanks for showing us the new planter and tractor. I am sure you will show us more on the new tractor and planter as you get acquainted with them. I see you had a John Deere person helping you that first day which was a good thing to do. Getting used to a new planter is hard enough. The new lighting system is really good-wow. Really lights up the back of the tractor and the front of the new planter. Wow. Lots of light. By you feedback on the new planter you are pleased with it and its operation. That is very good. A good start is always a confidence builder. Good going Zach. Good to see your dad. He likes running the sprayer i do believe. Believe he was in the refrigerator before starting the film. Getting one of those factor meals to start the day. Thanks for everything Zach and Becky on the editing. You all take care and be safe. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.

  • Hey Millennial, the tractors I drove were not mancaves, especially before they started to build them with cabs. The new technology is incredible, especially for someone like me. I finished schooling before there were even electronic calculators available. So much has changed, but you still need to sit sleep-deprived and alone, sometimes lonely and worried, with machinery you hope keeps working and squeeze a couple months of work into a couple of weeks. For me, if things quit working a big hammer, vice grips and a portable welder often did the trick to be up and running again. But now, what if a satellite is lost, critical computer systems are hacked, or the power grid fails? When I started farming, failure to execute the plan or solve unexpected obstacles could mean losing a farm and finding a new job to feed the family. Now, technical failures could affect the entire food supply. As for the riderless tractor, I agree the technology is available, but the time needed to troubleshoot remotely and drive back and forth to respond to the myriad of monitors might negate any time-saving. Good luck with the planting and be careful with your health.
