Toyota Prado 2019 GXL. Is it the best?
Full Review
www.anyauto.com.au/toyota-pra...
Prado has a chunky look that leaves no doubt as to the family association with bigger brother, the LandCruiser 200 series. Viewed in isolation, Prado still looks good. However, pictured against other, prettier SUVs, not so much.
There are Bi LED headlights and DTRLs with high beam assist. Strangely, the Auto-On function is restricted to the top 2 models. It wouldn’t have killed Toyota to spring for dusk-sensing across the range.
The top model (Kakadu) also has niftyl air suspension, but the rest have conventional springs aka passive suspension. GXL has 17” wheels which includes the aforementioned full size spare.
And, that takes us to the first of the recent upgrades.
There is an option called the Flat Tailgate Pack.
This pack moves the spare wheel off the back door to underneath the rear of the car. That’s great for access and makes opening the side- hinged door much easier, especially when facing down hill. It also allows for a glass hatch to be fitted. The glass hatch can be opened while ever the door is closed and allows small items to be placed directly into the cargo hold. This option is only available in automatic Prados.
It all comes at a price, but not the one you’re thinking of.
You see, Prado has 2 fuel tanks. The main tank is 87L and the smaller tank is 63L. This auxiliary tank is lost when the spare wheel is moved underneath. So, there are swings and roundabouts, and the buyer has to decide whether convenience or distance is the more important criterion. Serious off roaders will no doubt pick distance.
The highset Prado has 219mm of ground clearance, with an approach angle of 30.4°, a departure angle of 23.5°, and a ramp over angle of 21.1°. GXL and VX are 1890mm tall, and all models are 4995mm long. Length is reduced to 4825mm with the Flat Tailgate option. Kerb weight is 2325, and 100kg lighter in Flat Tailgate examples.
One final word on the Flat Tailgate Pack, it changes to look, neatens the rear end, and looks much less like it is an ex-army reject.
Interior
The cabin is functional, but for a car costing $59,990 plus onroads, is slightly disappointing.
Despite subtle nip-and-tucks over the years, the dash looks outdated, like its bigger LandCruiser sister. There is more than a touch of the 90’s about it. Grey plastic looks naff.
Comfortable leather seating has powered adjustments. All models have 7 seats with only the entry level car having a 5 seat option. The 3rd row is for height-challenged humans , as usual. The fold up process cleverly tucks the seat under the back. Once the seat back is up you then slide the seat bottom into place. 7 seats is a welcome option for those who need it. To those who don’t, the space could be better used for luggage.
Instruments looks particularly old fashioned.
Although it’s all within easy reach, some of it feels a bit clunky. The centre console and centre stack looks particularly old fashioned. On the upside, the large centre armrest conceals and a capacious airconditioned compartment. This is upgraded to refrigeration in the top two models. There is another small covered cubby hole under the climate controls. In Kakadu, off-roading Crawl controls replace this bin.
The spacious interior is generally of decent quality, but there are acres of cheap plastic. There is no real need to replace Prado completely, but the cabin needs a total redesign.
The boot is big enough to take my fold up electric bike and is not overly compromised by the 3rd row of seats. I would still prefer the extra space afforded by ditching the 3rd row.
First time I come across a great review. Outstanding job! Thank you.
I have the 2018 Kakadu or as we call in in NZ, VX Limited. It has all of those things that you said were missing in the GXL or VX here. I love it, pulls a caravan and reliable as on and off road. Looking forward to putting 300k on it!
I watched few videos but this is the best explanation thanks 😊
Glad it was helpful! please share widely
I have a 2007 Prado V6 212000k still going great 😍
I have a 2018 commercial short wheel base version - basically a two seater van (in Ireland). You get none of the fancy stuff in your example but it does what I want it to so I am happy with it. Also it looks pretty good when its clean.
I often think they should have brought a basic model in here too. you're right, sometimes some just want the A to B car
THANK You. GREAT review.
My pleasure!
I have a Prado 95. 379,600km so far! My favourite car ever!
Stuart Gunn awesome car!
I have a prado 2021 gxl I got it a few weeks ago I am inpressed on how it has been manufactured over the years
they're quite good on the open road too:) but offroad, excellent

I really love your video Sir i enjoyed watching it and the land cruiser is the best
Glad you enjoyed it! please feel free to shae
Love it, reasonable price in Au but crazy price in Thailand, I miss it.
You and me both! Shame about the Thai price.
Prado150 2009 With 488000km Run smooth like new
I just bought one on 2019
Glory to God
I bought the GXL 2019 - no different inside to a 2013 model less a few few shiny things - but it’s a prado so the engine is bow bow - mic drop
Peter Kelly get a steinbauer you will love it! Mine is like a V6 now 👌🏻
Toyota needs to bring the Prado to the USA!!!!!
That thing takes ages to accelerate
Reliable 2.8L engine that just caused a class action suit against Toyota.
Juan David Escobar I agree that dpf is a problem for sure.
The Engine is fine it’s the emission system that’s the issue
@yusufaustralia I guess My 2.8 1GDFTV Prado has been braking down left right and centre then..... NAH its fine mate! NEVER had a single issue. Get the facts.
@Mr. Cairo it shouldn't matter how and when your drive a vehicle (within reason), it shouldn't break down worth dpf issues. What about all the Victorians that can only drive within 5km at the moment, should they not drive their Prados in case the dpf sh*ts itself?
You from UK or Australia? Prado is popularly of Toyota in Commonwealth countries, not like North America they have Land Cruiser 200.
We have both Landcruiser Prado, and Landcruiser 200
It’s the best
En la usa no ai ese tipo carros
would anyone want this vehicle for normal driving conditions, and if so, why?
Prado is the best
Hhvx Sueus correct
I have 2010 Prado 2.7 and for me it’s the best car ever. Just add gas, change oil timely and you’re good to go.
Heh thats. Shit a 2004 prado is better 4.0L V6
Abdulrahman Alyami no a 3.0 Diésel is better
Here in Peru, the Prado base model starts at USD 52 000 wich is AUD 90 000 aprox. because of the taxes I guess...
that's an awful lot, and I thought Australia was expensive.
100.000 USD for base version in Vietnam. Engine 2.7l gasoline, 156hp :) same with Fortuner at all.
I prefer the v6 petrol... We're getting it late this year
thirsty though
still waiting to get mine if they get apple car play or andoid auto on it
probably will.
Does now
It seems like it is copy of gm 460 but gx carries 4.6 liter 8 cylinder engine
Sandeep Cheema gx460 is basically luxury version of this car like lx570 is of land cruiser
I LOVE TOYOTA LAND CRUSIER PRADO
Constance Adaku yes same here!
thanks nice, can u compare this car with pajero sports?
we will try and get one soon
My dad bought a Prado model of 2020 in this year
does he like it? do you like it for that matter?
Adurable driving car
4500 Nm of torque 😂😂
8.15 feel it .....
7:00 what’s the name of that tank!
Are you talking about the Silo Beast? They don't make them any more, so i got 3 of them:)
apple 🍎 can really do something for the cockpit of Toyota Prado
yes, make it usable:)
Hi. Prado vs series 70. Any thoughts.
for me there is no choice, it's Prado. But it really does depend on what you want to use it for. Prado is far more comfortable and modern. It drives better and IMO is better value.
👍best
cheers, and thanks
This car is made for Africa❤️❤️❤️
True that. Many a long journey was done in Africa in one of these. thanks for watching
LandCruisers are made for arabian sahara
@@mohammadalkalaldeh3629 because Arabian is ridiculously rich. The rest of the world just need a Prado mate.
Never seen them in the US
US sucks then
it might be sold as a LEXUS there
How much did toyota pay you for every unit they sell ?
the only thing reviewers get is a car with a tank of fuel. that is the joy of being independent.
Yes😉 but don’t say what Toyota wants to hear and you won’t be getting one next time.
They are a little small inside, too much electricals, should have much more clearance underneath, meybe next model
it's a tough, but aging car
Wow. 120 series is better 4.0L V6.
4,500 NM.......I don’t think so!
I prefer the manual
i haven't seen a manual one in ages. in fact I rarely get to drive them these days, period
3rd row seats leg space are worse than what disco 4s offer, but access on the Toyota is faaaaaaaar better lol. I’d still take the disco for a 7 seater lol haha
Still think rear seats are for short ppl though!
On my channel we take out various Prado models off-road to find the limits!
Its about what you don,t get for your money, as much as what you do.
Pajero Sport over this hands down.
I had a Pajero sport as a courtesy car for when my 2012 Prado gx was in for some panel beating, the wife and I couldn't wait to get into our Prado, Pajero was so noisy and unrefined
Pajero suck!
4500 Nm?😏
it is very powerful, but not quite THAT powerful:)
Lexus GX 470 in America
I always think it is odd that Toyota still co-brands models.... but there you go i guess:)
Any AutoTV Lexus IS basically toyotas luxury brand. Just like Nissan has infinity for example
Actually it's Lexus GX 460
new and old defender still the king 👍👍👍
Sure it goes anywhere, but they drive like relics:)
😂 landrover king of breaking down! 🤣
$20,000 more expensive than a Pajero and Toyota won't take responsibility for the dpf issues, no thanks.
Mitsubishi’s suck!
For $59k i bought top of range toyota fortuner. Fortuner has more room for luggage than prado when all 7 seats are in use and fortuner has more ground clearance than prado.
We’re looking to upgrade our 2005 model, but these are ridiculously expensive for what they are. It’s an old car that Toyota just tarts up every couple of years. Seriously, Toyota would have amortised the development cost of the Prado at least a decade ago. They will be building these things for peanuts now. Price should be about $40,000, particularly in view of how basic they are. $66,500 for a mid spec car with no leather interior, no Apple CarPlay or Android, no front parking sensors (extra cost option), really basic switchgear they’ve been using for years, etc etc. The Kakadu pricing is a joke. Toyota are stiffing Australians for the money. I’m considering switching to a Ford Everest. Drives much better, more power, 10 speed auto, steers like a car instead of a boat, a more comfortable ride, just as good off road, more ground clearance, higher tow rating and cheaper.
It's true that it is an old car. I asked Toyota if there are plans to upgrade. If there are, they aren't talking. Same goes for Landcruiser
the most popu;ar car in Australia and you dont have a good thing to say about it, might not have been a good thing for you to reveiw hey
it is not the most popular car in australia, and good marketing does not equal good car
Sure I need somewhere to keep my passport in the car which I'll need to carry when travelling Australia. It's a 4WD for soccer mums to meet up for lattes. I'm so glad I replaced mine with a BT50.
and the BT 50 is slightly more practical
BT 50's are rebadged fords. Build quality is hideous compared to this rig
I like but it’s so expensive 😔🇦🇺😔I don’t buy it
sometimes a typo is missed. hey ho. not much you can do once published
Back seats suck ! So small ! Why even leave 200mm of space what’s the point .
indeed
I wonder why they call it a Landcruiser.
stendec Stretcher because it’s tough and very capable check out some of the off roaming on my channel
It's like a budget version of Land Cruiser
@@CarRevvedGaming its a landcruiser 150 you numpty!
Nope vx.r the king
top models are awlays best:)
Toyota is reliable but dull...
In every way and respect the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport kills the Prado. Price, features, reliability, handling and off road capabilities.
Hi David, in some six months from now I'm thinking about a Kakadu or VX Land Cruiser. 2 Things that are most important to me is off road ability and longevity. It's a proven fact that Toyota's are reliable and will last forever, but I also love my Mitsubishi diesels too. So, how would you compare your Sport off road against the Kakadu Prado with its diff locks and the cruiser with its off road prowess? Also are the Sports reliable and would they last as long as the cruiser/prado? Thanks in advance.
Sooner or later you have to get out and look at it!
Why the Pajero Sport is better than Prado when the Fortuner destroys the Pajero? Reasons : More Features, better reliability, better handling if you go for the sport mode, and better off road because it is more powerful. Both Prado and Fortuner support 4.0L V6. The Fortuner has 239hp and the Prado has 271hp.
@@AnyAutoTV ugly is beautiful. That's what my mother told me.
Yuck , styling awful , interior looks so nasty cheap , no thanks
450 nm of toqrue is a joke today? literally a joke.,
At 0:20 of this video it says ... 4500Nm :))
Tomas A. How does it have so much torque, the land cruiser v8 here in US has way less, but perhaps more power, probably because of gasoline instead of diesel.
Anees Sarwar for example! A 2011 4.4 tdv8 Range Rover ( standard engine) has 700 nm of torque and 310hp going through a 8 speed gearbox, the Toyota’s output was good for 2004 but not today!. I’ve towed with bought cars mentioned above and a lot more and find the Toyota not a very good tow car and underpowered.
Stephen Langan really? Not a good towing car? It may not be as good at towing as it is at off road, but it can tow heavy objects, well over 5,500 lb trailers.
just going on past experience never found them good at towing and off road they are not as good as a Land rover either.
No it's the worst
For a non Bunnings weekend crawler, get the base models, to heck with apple car play bs distractions, like having windows 95 in your car. Buy the bases save the dollars and upgrade suspension with a lift, some bar work, decent rims and meat get a great A,pine without all that touch screen bs, keep it real and use your car for what it’s is made for driving not entertaining the rug rats mrs and any other 7s millennials. Still have dollars left over from top models. a thats if buying new, those that know don’t buy DPF models, have a car that easily out last people driving it, instead of the Jones who upgrade every year let them enjoy the DPF and hybrid a play with me car lame I have no responsibility or driving skills technology bull s***t. Better yet just but a Yaris and save us all a head have and also stop singing ours doors when all 7 plonkers jump in and out of said vehicle cause they are arrogance selfish shitheads. U don’t need SUVs you can’t drive iditotts, leave the real 4wdinf to people who leave the tarmac for actual dirt. Stay in your lane( and for you Z gen Millenials I don’t mean road lane) Get an uber and stay on your tab,et and iphone land you’ll be even happier plugged in 24/7. And maybe just maybe when I come to town I can avoid and other door panel re shape and paint from all the SUV dicheads who think because they sit high they can do what the hell they like to others cars park in parks cause they can’t drive and park in the one painted for them because there isn’t an app for that yet or a parking camera called Kitt that will take over in auto mode for you, only Xgen will know what Im talking about re Kitt. I drive Prados love em, still bit like AWD you snoobed down on, a Prado isn’t a true Landcrusier is it. V8 TD yeah now thats a real LC take that and shove it up your Hybrid EV SUV from Hyundai or Tesla.
But... Why the hell it has to be such ugly one?? 120 had the most balanced look I would say
it's been around for a LONG time...:) it jus looks a bit dated
@@AnyAutoTV yeah, though classic lines get old slowly lol
