#USA #Portugal #FIFAWorldCup
I remember setting my alarm for 2:00am to watch this game! I still get chills watching the USA drubbing Portugal!
I was about to say,say that again!👊🏽
3-2 is not a drubbing. If there had not been an own goal I might agree with you.
@@RikSandstromCaliforniait was 3-0 at half. OG doesn’t change if
I remember that I was an American living in Sweden at the time. Watching this at a bar. Everyone was rooting against the USA. I gave them all the middle finger as I left the bar.
Nice!
But they sure rushed to join NATO
Yeah, most people in Europe are "liberals", especially for the time.
Lame
This USA was one of the most talented squads in my opinion. Bravo USA! 👏
If it wasn't for that handball that saved Germany.... We would've reached the semi final
Man, these were the days. I still miss the greats. Donovan, Beasley, McBride. The players that really mattered.
Don't forget Frankie!
Clint dempsey
What a win for USA
That USA kit was mint. The team was actually great, I was gutted when they got robbed by Germany in the quarters
They weren't robbed. Germany may have had a lousy team, but they lost that game fair and square.
@@luperamos7307 there was a clear handball on the goal line to deny the states an equalizer late on
The Nike "Total 90" kits, boots and footballs of that time period were fire. Mercurial boots as well.
Behave. The referee Hugh Dallas and his linesman missed a clear handball by Frings on the line. If properly called, then penalty to the USA which they likely convert. Fair and square? You're having a laugh mate. @@luperamos7307
@@luperamos7307 The Torsten Frings handball says otherwise. And I say this as Russia and West Ham supporter.
This was the last tournament Portugal played before Cristiano.
Not everything is about Cristiano
@@MESSI2014RIOI’m a Messi guy but that’s funny coming from a guy with Messi in his name.

Brian mc bride is one of the most underrated American players.
🇺🇸 Those USA kits are goated 🙌👏
USA 2002 and 2010 were something on fire which never happens again for a long time…
2014 as well
My first World Cup. I've been a football fan ever since that McBride header went in (and a Fulham fan.)
Yeah he didn't play for Fulham then....first English team he played for was Everton in 2002/03.
@@FootkerSnookball what do you mean he didn’t play for Fulham he played with Everton first he also played at Fulham
@@thereaper2189 I know.
I was at this game. Everybody was shocked especially at 3-0
Brad Friedel...a total legend...over 500 professional matches....so long in England that he developed a hardcore accent
The 2002 World Cup was filmed entirely in HD, why don't FIFA just get that higher quality footage instead of this?
I remember watching this ina NYC bar at like 4 in the morning and we were just amazed the US beat Portugal who were favs and to see US get to the quarterfinals this 2002 team really started the US back to the WC
Mr. Donovan, Mr. McBride is my favorite , impressive and respectful USA legendary foot ball player. I am looking forward to 2026 FIFA WC⚽
This was surreal to watch as a13 year old at the time.
U american? And are you 35 now?
Vs Mexico was even better. Lol!
Usa could of go to the semi final but. Oliver kahn and rigged refree
Same. I was 15 at that time and ppl were fuming in school. Portugal were one of the favourites going into the tournament lol
17 here haha
I knew nothing about US soccer. It must be so unpopular in the US being the 4th or 5th? And Portugal had the whole top tier squad. Looks like US is no match. The match? 30 mins in and US is leading 3-0. Holy moly.
It's 3rd biggest now by numbers
It's the 3rd most popular sport now basically just about to surpass baseball.
What made that 2002 squad so special was actually that "nothing to lose" mentality we had because not only was football much less popular than it is now, but this game aired in the middle of the night here in America. Unlike the other 31 countries in that tournament, the US wasn't facing the pressure of potentially letting down their whole country because pretty much nobody in the US was watching or cared at all. For that reason, the players went into the tournament with a mindset of "f**k it, nobody back home cares if we lose so let's just give it a shot!"
Maybe but I think the World Baseball Classic is going to make Baseball popular again. I think Soccer is tied for popularity with Baseball. Baseball is played far more by kids though still. @@mrfilamfishing
1-0 John O'Brien (4 min) 2-0 Jorge Costa (30 min (OG)) 3-0 Brian McBride (36 min) 3-1 Beto (39 min) 3-2 Jeff Agoos (71 min (OG))
Surprisingly this is the last time the U.S has beaten a European team at the World Cup
That’s sad
@@SkinslyfeRonaldo saved Portugal last time.
imo, our second-greatest victory in the modern era, just behind mexico in the round-of-16 of the same tournament. usmnt in 2002 was *slept on af.*
man John O'Brien, Earnie Stewart, and Pablo Mastroeni was a heck of a midfield
greatest cup performance for the U.S ....(so far)
When it was 3-0 it looked like they could keep trashing Portugal. After Portugal made it 3-2 it looked like the they were gonna choke!
El verdadero gigante de concacaf 🇺🇸❤️ haciendo partidos memorables desde hace mucho tiempo
Brad Friedel Was A Brilliant Save ⚽️👍
"USA players were on steroids " said by Diaz bros 😂
Amazing 😮
These highlights don't show how dominant Brian McBride was in the air in this game. He was leaping over Portugal defenders to win everything. He was outstanding.
Faltou Eusébio aí no time de Portugal.
Wednesday 5th June 2002
The 2002 World Cup is by far not a perfect one, but it does have highlights - like "the Three R's" of Brazil, Germany's full use of teamwork, Turkey's surprising phenomenal performance! Oh early 2000s, how I miss those years!
4 R's counting RobertoCarlos. All 4 scored vs China in a 4-0 win as well.

Everyone underestimates USA but most people don''t know that USA reached a world cup semi-final once in the first world cup 1930 lost the semi-final and won 3rd place
The term soccer was not coined till 1980s i guess haha
I agree with you. To a greater or lesser degree, US has a rich and interesting story in soccer and because of that they shouldn't be underestimated.
People act like the USA has no history in this sport but they are wrong !
@@samplingmastersxlr8660 You are right.
@@samplingmastersxlr8660 USA also held Italy to a 1-1 Draw in world cup 2006 and should've won that game Italy was the strongest team in the world at that time but even if USA had won Italy would still have topped that group and would've still been world cup champions
Usa usa usa
Tenia buen equipo estados unidos actualmente tambien 🇺🇸⚽️
