    • @@dzeo7569 NO, it doesn't?! Clarke clearly handles the ball, the referee signals this TWICE by tapping his hand, he awards a free kick from the exact spot where Clarke was standing, the English players aren't even protesting the decision. How can you be so oblivious? It couldn't be much clearer.

  • I can remember watching this and although the result went against England I would say that this game was my most memorable world cup moment ever. Such an exciting match from start to finish and one which kept you on the edge of your seat for its entire duration. Watching games nowadays and I seem to get bored after 10minutes.

  • I was at Wembley for this game, and what a game it was. I remember all of us singing "give us a goal" - and Poland then scored! I missed Hector's effort being cleared off the line in the last minute because everyone stood up (I was only 11!), I had a blinding headache at the end and my Dad congratulated some Poland fans after the game. But HOW did England not win?

England really should have won that night: we had a team full of heroes and a World Cup winning manager. Clever Brian Clough called their keeper a clown, knowing full well it would not only give us a laugh when we needed it, but he'd always be remembered for it. And he is, God rest him.

  • Just barely thirteen when I watched this crucial World Cup qualifier between England and Poland at Wembley on 17 October 1973. England needed a win whereas Poland the 1972 Olympic champions just a draw would be suffice. Five months earlier at Katowice,England had suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to the Poles.But this time around with home ground advantage the English fans had expected the home team to walk over the visitors.Moreover last month on 26 September in a friendly at the same venue England had crushed Austria 7-0. The Poles knew that it would not be easy playing England at Wembley and they came with intentions hoping for a draw. Yes that night England attacked relentlessly and ruthlessly non stop for the duration of the match.The only problem.The England frontline lacked finishing power.The ball would not go in despite the many chances.Allan Clarke,Martin Chivers,Colin Bell and Mick Channon did have chances presented to them.But they just could not apply the finishing touches. It was either the Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszeski or the goal post that stood in England's way.And the Poles too had Lady Luck to thank them. For all their dominance England despite equalising with an Allan Clarke penalty just could not score another to qualify for the Munich finals. One of the blackest days in English football but then the home team had no one but only themselves to blame.Chances were a plenty but forwards especially the culprit Martin Chivers left their scoring boots at home. That draw sealed Sir Alf Ramsey's fate as England's supremo.He would continue to take charge but too for two England friendlies with Italy and Portugal in April the following year.

  • Jan Domarski's goal in the 57th minute killed off England's 1974 World Cup qualification hopes and thus for the first time since 1950 England missed the boat to the World Cup finals. A defensive lapse by Norman Hunter resulted in Gregord Lato easily disposed the former of the ball and the latter raced through to enable Domarski to slip the ball through between the legs of goalkeeper Peter Shilton.That goal by Dormaski meant that England in the next thirty three minutes had to score twice to make the Munich finals. As such,the home team were desperate not only to equalise but to score another.The equaliser did come a few minutes later and Allan Clarke cooly slotted the ball past Tomaszeski. But for the remaining minutes of the match,tried as they could,England just could not score another that would have sealed England's passage to the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany. Sir Alf Ramsey was numb with helplessness after the match.Ask about what would be his future as England's supremo he replied,"Who knows?"

  • Sir Alf Ramsey should have recalled Geoff Hurst and Francis Lee for this crucial World Cup tie with Poland at Wembley on 17 October 1973. But he did not and paid the price.The rather clumsy Martin Chivers was ineffective and had Hurst and Lee being available they could have tucked away those chances. The front line of Channon,Chivers and Clarke misfired and missed so many chances which could have sealed an easy win for England. The Poles were hardly in the game at all except for the goal by Jan Domarski. Why and how did England missed all those chances?And England forced no less than twenty six corners and had dominated the proceedings for the entire match.The misfiring Martin Chivers could have made way for Kevin Hector much earlier but one wonders why Sir Alf had not done it much earlier.Chivers as we all know had played his last game for England and was not recalled for England's next friendly with Italy at Wembley in November.Norman Hunter made a blunder of it all as he miskicked and allowed Gregorzt Lato to race through allowing Dormarski to deliver the killer goal.Clarke equalised at 1-1 five minutes later but it was too little too late.

  • The England players were so much in a hurry to get on with the ball and to go in for the kill.This must have unsettled them. Instead they should have been more cautious and take their time to gradually built up their attacks. The Poles knew that the home team was under tremendous pressure to deliver in the goals and they concentrated on tightening up their defence to make sure that England did not get an early goal.

A przy stanie 0-1, Deyna znowu kiwa dwóch Anglików, podaje kanałem do Laty, ten wychodzi sam na sam z Shiltonem i psuje? Tak naprawdę, to Anglicy mieli jakieś 4 sytuacje, a Polska 3. • Shilton got away with that goal. I was only 8 years old watching this game with my Dad and older brother but I don't recall him being especially blamed. The man who was blamed was Hunter for treading on the ball as he tried to trap it and let the Polish player get away from him. Hughes and McFarland did their best to cover but the speed and decisiveness of the Polish counter and the clinical finish from Domarski were excellent. Shilton should have done better, and he was slow to set himself for the shot. He rises up with a little jump just before Domarsky shoots. Domarski didn't give the ball a first touch but delivered a quick first time snapshot. Shilton was clearly expecting the Pole to give it a first touch before shooting and was caught unawares and coudn't get down to the ball. England's attacks looked frenetic and frenzied. What they really needed to was less frenzy and more control and incisive play. Basically they lacked quality. Although this was a very strong Poland side that went on to finish 3rd in the World cup.

      @myroseaccount@myroseaccount6 жыл бұрын
    • . Shilton did seem to get away with being blamed throughout his England career whilst his counterpart, Clemence, was castigated for his errors (Scotland, Norway and Hungary spring to mind). However Clemence was not directly responsible for England failing to progress at any world cup. But Shilton was on 3 separate occasions. Poland in 73. Argentina in 86 where he was out jumped by Maradona. And West Germany in 90 when he should have dealt with the free kick. Terrific goalkeeper. But error prone on the big occasion.

Yes, most of the suspects were English, but two weren't: one was an American stage actor living in London, who committed suicide, and the killings strangely stopped shortly afterwards, another suspect was an Eastern European emigré.
