I really think this is the best scene in the "children of dune" series. why is it that we have the best conversation with our grandmothers? frank herbert is without a doubt in my mind, a kind of legend. he wrote this scene, and james mcavoy did a superb job. it reaches out to me on a personal level, reminds me of conversations with my grandmother. look at the colours... golden light, the golden path: but there also are shadows. yin and yang...
“Grandmother…would you still love me if I turned into a worm?”
It would have been funny if he just decided to mess with her a bit. Leto II: "What? No Grandpa! Bad -- bad idea!! You weren't genetically related to her -- I *am* genetically related to her. No... *no*. Bad Grandpa. Back in the closet you go -- dirty old man..."

His acting is consummate. And he really showed the world his acting ability in this series and such scenes.
Kind of reminds me of how Paul reacted to the lady who used the voice on him though he was a lot more serious.
I know! LOL. He's more powerful than she could ever be.
It's a fine effort. Leto was about as smug a character as could ever be. He's the heir to the throne of the universe, and literally knows more than everyone.
Loved it when he laughed at her trying to use the voice on him !!! 😂
And blows her away with his own command of it. The shoe is on the other foot in this scene.
And still answers honestly
Why does she do that when she asks, “Is that what you’re struggling with?” Just to ensure he answers honestly?
The funny thing is that the golden path was in the end living and dying for his subjects. No one caused more pain to humanity than Leto II, but no one suffered more than him for humanity either.
He did what was necessary. The only true hero of Dune.
@@julitakamaki4386 I think you mean the Duncans
Leto understood he had to become the villain humanity needed to grow better.
He lived longer than any other human in history and suffered beyond the time he lived for “a pearl of consciousness within every worm but unable to influence a molecule of the body it resides”. “Either die a hero, or live long enough to watch yourself become a villain.”
Leto cause pain to humanity cause it was the only way to the golden path
I love the giggle when she tries to Voice him...
"Nice try, try again later" -Leto II
"How quaint" giggle
It's definitely a show of Leto IIs power. He literally just chuckles it off, it came across as 'You didn't need to do that I was gonna tell you anyway'

Just as I am now convinced that Oscar Isaac is THE Leto I., I am certain that no-one will ever top James McAvoy as Leto II. Something just clicks right into place when you see them on screen after reading the books.

Pretty sure that most Dune freakazoids like myself love McAvoy as Leto because he is spot on perfect in this role. This remake of the Dune series was the best yet.

Vivian Anderson I don’t find this Lady Jessica at all believable
She came back to Arrakis, checking if her grandchildren were possessed by the souls of their ancestors. But she didn't see possession in her daughter until it was too late...

So, I'm really glad they aged Leto up for the mini-series. But scenes like this are so much more powerful when Leto was in a 10-year olds body.
Indeed, this doesn't sell the main point the book perfectly conveyed in this chapter. Jessica slowly understanding how little she understands about Leto (and how Leto uses that to play her like a fiddle). In the book the fact it's the body of a 9 year old Child makes this even more poignant. This scene is cool and all but the book is far superior
Yeah, but it would have been just a poin in the ass for the whole production and get a child to nail such a complex preformance . . . It actualy is one of very few cases where I find they made the right decission to change the main characters like this
@@arianewinter4266 "So I'm really glad they aged Leto up for the mini-series." - me
YES! It would have been almost Exorcist-ish to have a 10 year old talk of things of intimacy or even the mature acrobatics needed for the final scene. A kid couldn't really pull that kind of thing off. Also when Ghani talks about whose blood she wants to see spilled on the wedding sheets.. well, it would be kind of cringe-worthy if a child would say those things. I"m glad they "aged up" the twins.. it made them less "oddities" or "precocious pre-borns" and more human; downplaying their "genetic inheritance' and elevating their other qualities.. Leto's insight and Ghani's empathy and compassion.
@@creativewriter3887 considering the destruction he would later unleash upon the galaxy, the omen would be a better comparison.

Leto and Ghanima, the dynamic between them and then the extended duality in their interactions with everyone else... it was amazing. Perfect, even.

@@creativewriter3887 Oh completely! Very probably the only instance in literature where a lack of incestuous undertones would be noted and missed. Those poor characters…
Given that both carry memories of all the couples that made them possible it's kind if inevitable such tensions would exist. Like Alia they were never really children in their own right.
@@Concreteowl I have to admit that I really appreciated that they aged them up in the adaptation. Granted, they would never have been able to find 9-year olds who could manage the parts, but it was so very hard to get my head around them being 9… I think this worked far better.
He speaks to his grandmother about her lover (his namesake) literally living on within him. Both should know that she is literally living on within him too. All of his ancestors do.

I think he is perfect for this part because he brings across the notion of a very young person with a very old soul just perfectly - he has that boyish air about himself, and yet a maturity beyond the years that he outwardly has, and there is a hard look in his eyes sometimes that could make you cringe. He clearly is the one in power in this situation. To think of it - having all those previous selves inside of him almost gives him a latent case of multiple personality disorder, without the dissociative component. (And McAvoy did play a person with MPD once!)
A lot praise in this scene for how McAvoy handles his part, but I want to praise Krige for being able to showcase Jessica in this. Jessica comes in expecting to deal with a child's mind, something she should be able to easily pry into. But in mere moments she goes from confident to terrified that all her abilities are little better than an insects compared to what this "child" in front of her is capable of. When he reads through her to see that she see her Duke in him, to him laughing at her effort to use the Voice on him, to his using the Voice on her shutting her down and locking her in place even though he's not really putting anything into the Voice.
I mean it is said in the books that he has a whole bloody council of the smartest personalities of his ancestors in him he was preborn so he did modifications to his body before he was born and I also think that the Bene geserate were so stupid in thinking that they could ever control a being like him.

James McAvoy is a genius actor. 🙌🙌🙌
I love this scene. McAvoy at his subtlest and best acting. Also the dialogue is great and James plays the role of the precocious teenager winning verbal exchange after verbal exchange with his Bene Gezarit grandmother to perfection. I don't know which line/acting I like best. I just love for example when he tells her that he reminds her of Leto, his namesake and her beloved Duke... and how talking about it will lead them down a line of intimacy which will make them both feel uncomfortable. I also love how subtle is McAvoy when she tries to use the voice on him and how mature is his responds when he tells her "it is possible, but is it desirable? I have some difficult decisions to make, Grandmother." I also love the ending... Lady Jessica still thinks that she has the upper hand and tells him "I can help you." I just love his response, along with him choosing to use the voice "on the contrary, Grandmother. It is I who can help you." Just brilliant dialogue and brilliant acting. Rebecca Ferguson is great here, but James steals to show.
That ain’t Rebecca Ferguson She’s in the newest remake
Alice Krige.
It's nice to see a young Picard and the borg queen in the holosuit having a good time.
Watching this scene as I begin to understand Dune lore more and more always fascinates me. We learn here that Leto II is much more powerful than everyone who has came before him. Paul, Jessica, Leto - They were needed to push Leto II to this position of power and he understands that. He doesn't take this opportunity as a gift for him to use, but rather a privilege - since he knows that he is unlike anyone who will ever exist. At this stage of power, he knows he can get whatever he wants whenever he wants, hell he can even see it himself eventually happening. But here he's asking the question, "what is better for humanity?" He can be a good leader, an Emperor which only provides for their people and lives for them. But he sees this outcome, and while it is comfortable, it isn't long nor prosperous. He can choose the path that Paul abandoned, a way into history that will make him dominate the Known Universe with an iron fist for a people which despise his hand, but humanity will continue. He can become more powerful than any being before and after him, but he needs to change himself completely into something almost monstrous. It's once again the issue that Paul had upon his arrival to Arrakis. Lose greater power which saves lives but ultimately leads humanity into a dead-end, or gain power at the cost of lives for humanity to preserve itself.
This lady Jessica does give off similar vibes to the fantastic portrayal by Rebecca Ferguson

I think Herbert was drawing on powerful experiences of his own with certain archetypes, and that he used fiction as a container or space in which to safely explore them. He was engaged in what Jung called active imagination.
Well, he was also exploring certain ideas that were popular at the time. For example, the idea of genetic ancestral memory, which is seen as fringe today, was actually being treated seriously by some people in the 60's and 70's.
@Curiouser11 - You're forgetting one small, crucial detail: we do *not* carry the genes of *all* our ancestors. Only 1/4 of your genes come from each of your grandparents, 1/8 from great-parents, 1/16 for great-great grandparents, etc.... Thus, the amount of genetic information that you have from ancestors reduces each generation back that you go. Eventually, you will have little or nothing carried over directly from distant ancestors. Not that Herbert was ever very consistent on this topic anyway. For example, he frequently forgot, in his own explanation of genetic ancestral memory, that no further genetic exchange takes place after conception. So, just as an example, the ego-memory of Baron Harkonnen that possessed Alia should have been of a younger Baron with no recollection of what he had done in the decades after conceiving Jessica.
Wouldn’t the ego of the baron been able to see what had happened from inside alias mind tho?
Every time I catch myself wishing they'd do another remake of Dune to finally do it Justice with a massive budget, I'm halted by the realization that should the story make it this far it won't have an actor as good as James playing Leto II.
