Hollywood 'finally' got the 'Ricky Gervais memo' following Golden Globes

Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan says it looks as though Hollywood may have finally gotten the “Ricky Gervais memo” following this year’s Golden Globe Awards.
Mr Morgan said the ceremony was devoid of the “usual political pontificating and virtue-signalling sermons”.
"It looks as if Hollywood might finally have got the Ricky Gervais memo," he said.
"Even more amazingly, Gervais himself, who's currently running the cancel culture gauntlet once again for his supposedly unacceptable and distasteful jokes in his new Netflix special, Armageddon, actually won a top award for it,” Mr Morgan said.
“Amid the conflict, disruption and a massive year for elections around the world, maybe 2024 has begun with a suggestion, just a suggestion, that the woke worm is finally turning."

    • BS woke is one thing and that is what woke has become confused with. Do you even know what woke means at it's core. It means to BE AWARE of social/religious injustices, inequalities and persecutions. Simply that and if you have a problem with that, then you are the problem, not the solution. Wonder how anti woke you would be, is something happens to you personally that leaves you vulnerable to society and your neighbours decide to step up and help you out because they are AWARE of your situation?

He’s actually saying filmmakers and storytellers are *more* important than they think they are, by underestimating the power of their art which leads them to thinking they have to “do more” by being political. Thousands of ordinary Australians were accused of lying to the Australian Federal government about their social welfare payments, including child rebates,. Dozens of people committed suicide, marriages broke up. Why? It was because of the exact same things about technology that Peterson was just talking about. All the politicians just wrung their hands and have not accepted any culpability.

  • Piers, we have known about this terrible scandal with the Post Office for many years, I am curious as to why the media has not beaten the drum on this before now, and waited until a TV drama is made and encited the public to suddenly be outraged. Is it because focusing on bringing down the government, any government, instead of worrying about ordinary people is the goal of their leaders?

  • Back in the late 80's, I was stationed in the ROK. CID titled(charged) hundreds of ordinary soldiers for theft of services, where, through a glitch, they were able to use the barracks phones, could call directly home. This resulted in millions of long distance(remember those) charges through the local phone services. No attempt to allow the :guilty" to pay, that is, until, officer's, senior officers, started to come up. Which was easier to prove as they had their own quarters, from which their calls were made. Then, the US Army decided that no one would be charged, so some justice, I guess.

  • We had something at work, no where close to serious like 700 innocent people having their lives ruined but similar type of problem. Our administration sent out emails to every single employee which listed the 5 worst offenders of people who spent time on Facebook while on duty for the previous year. It was to shame them and be a warning to all of the rules and now they would start punishing people. Only problem was the number one offender.... he didn't even have a FB account. Turns out for some reason whenever anyone logged onto their account in the building he was assigned to it registered him as the offender. Also odd was the number of hours he'd supposedly spent logged onto Fb for that calendar year was more hours then he had even been at work. After the reason for these 5 poor folks being lambasted it was discovered what went on. And for all 5 of them it was the same deal, anyone using the internet at the building they worked at it got logged as them doing it. Not surprising, no mass email was generated to everyone to let them know of the error or any apology, public or private. It was for a local government agency. Fails.

  • Cancel Culture is not new. Way back in 1983/4 I was in London, it was at the height of the 'fur seal' campaign. A large poster from Greenpeace urged people to boycott Canadian Fishermen as Canadian Fishermen 'clubbed' fur seals. My thought at the time was the opposite - buy more Canadian Fish and keep the Canadian Fishermen busy just catching fish.

  • Democracy requires letting everyone have a voice, and everyone gets a vote to decide what is in the common good. But that can't be allowed to devolve into the most vocal and active minorities hijacking agendas and using outrage, protests, 'direct action' and 'cancel culture' to try to force their agendas to be advanced when it isn't desired by or beneficial to the majority. Pandering to minorities is fine if it benefits them without significant cost to the majority, but you can't benefit a select few at the expense of the many. Seems like business may finally be waking up to the concept that pandering to a tiny fraction of your customers isn't profitable if it alienates the bulk of your customer base. The next group that needs to realize this is the politicians, who seem to think that the 'quiet majority' and 'moderate centre' can be taken for granted, and that the path to power is through appealing to the most active and 'motivated' (but small) extremes of their constituency.

    • Oh, please SMH stop your whinging. People have been stamping their feet, protesting, arguing and debating their positions on street corners, on the call-in radio, in the pub and outside Westminster for 100s of years - that's what we do. Then we go to the ballot box and we vote. If you don't like the way the country is going, vote differently. Moan, moan, bl**dy moan - that's we all hear online these days. Stop gassing and start doing. You're complaining about 'political activism' yet you don't seem to grasp that political activism encompasses all peoples from all political persuasions. If you're complaining about one type, of many, activist activity, go out and find the opposite camp and sign up and get active. Christ Almighty, it really isn't hard SMH The 'silent majority' is an idea you've been fed to placate you. There is no silent majority and if there was, it's not who you think/hope it is. Fascinating times. Buckle up!

    • Pandering to anyone is discrimination...as there is only one race... the human race. Race pandering is used for divide and conquer tactics by political classes to buy votes to stay in power. It is paid for by the majority to give special rights and privileges to a minority block.. It is never ever beneficial to free societies promoting success. By the way, the USA is a Constitutional Republic. We elect federal representatives to vote on our behalf. Someone best described a democracy as two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for dinner.

    • The U.S. is supposed to be a Republic, not a democracy. And while a Republic shares some democratic tendencies and characteristics it is fundamentally different. The reason our country has so many issues is we have forgotten what a Republic is and means. But I agree with your points

Ricky's speech at the 2020 GG reminded me of Paul Hogan when he was on the Oscar's in the 80's - he said winners should follow the 3 G's. 1. Be Gracious, 2 Be Grateful & 3. GET OFF!

Besides, If you ask me about Ricky, I think he's still Hollywood's golden boy and within the next 30 years, he'll be remembered as the stand up comedian, who got balls to make fun of the celebs and exposed the Hollywood elite. Regarding his latest hosting at the 2020 Golden globes, his Harvey Weinstein's joke stole the entire show.

In my opinion, they should get rid of all the "fluff" and just focus on the awards. Give more time for the people accepting the awards instead of wasting it on bad jokes and pointless monologues in between.
