What are the intersection rules in Australia (Give way rules)
This KZhead video focuses on the "give way" rules at intersections in Australia. It emphasizes the importance of following traffic rules to avoid chaos and accidents. The video explains how intersections are divided into main roads and side roads using stop and give way signs. It highlights that drivers on the main road have priority over those on the side road, and provides guidance on who to give way to when turning left, going straight, or turning right at intersections with stop and give way signs.
The video also covers scenarios where two cars are turning right, who goes first when two cars reach a stop sign simultaneously, uncontrolled intersections, intersections with one stop or give way sign, T-intersections, and intersections with four stop signs. It mentions common mistakes that can result in failing a driving test, such as not following give way rules, giving way unnecessarily, and misunderstanding road markings.
Overall, the video provides a comprehensive overview of giving way at intersections in Australia and offers helpful guidance for drivers to navigate these situations safely and in accordance with the rules.

Thank you for your video. I am no longer confused about Give way rules.
Certainly one of the nice easy neighbourhoods. The roads why I live can be like a war torn country plus so many hills and bad blind spots.
What a great video. Very informative. This is exactly what I need. Thank you.
You're welcome and thank you for the feedback. Glad you found this useful 🙏
Very helpful interactive instructions. Thank you
You're welcome 😊
Thank u sooooo much for this video. This is the first time I drive in Australia, not really familiar with the driving rules here. But your video do helped a lot! Thanks!
Jus a wow video so detailed. Thanks man
You're welcome 🙂
Very helpful, thank you so much!
You're welcome
Thanks for your time, your video has been very helpful in understanding the road rules and plan. I'm teaching my 16 year old daughter to drive and also teaching a friend.
You're welcome. Great. All the best 🙂
This video is great and just what I needed, thank you!!
You're welcome. Glad to hear that 🙂
Thank you very much for such a epic guide! Best i have ever seen!
You're welcome. Glad you found this helpful
Very helpful 👍 Thank you so much 😊
Thank you sir this is so helpful
Very good video. Easy to follow and understand. Alot better than any video by VicRds. Only problem is people ignore all these rules. If I had a dollar for every vehicle I see that ignores stop signs I would be rich.
Amazing video 🤠📸. Your videos are very helpful and informative. Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊. Glad to hear that.
Okay correct me if I'm wrong but when approaching a give way line or a stop sign, you have to give way to both pedestrians, cyclists and mobility device riders crossing the road you are exiting, and pedestrians crossing the road you are entering. I think you have said things in a way in this video where that could be true, but the graphics only show one of these for the situation where you have to give way to two "crossings" easy rule is, you always give way to pedestrians etc crossing the road you are entering, (unless you are continuing straight on the main road) and you always give way to pedestrians crossing the road you are exiting when at a give way or stop line (in addition to the road you are entering). These rules also apply at T-intersections At 20:45 you said the dotted line is not a give way line. This is correct in that you don't have to give way to cars, but you do have to give way to pedestrians and cyclists etc - I imagine you know this but I think this rule is part of the reason they do it.
Good explanation thanks
You're welcome 🙂
Very informative video.
Thank You a lot.
So helpful thank you!
You're welcome. Glad to hear that 🙂🙏
Excellent
King St, Lockyer St, Adamstown (4 way stop). There are a few uncontrolled intersections in built-up areas in the countryside but the councils made a point of putting give way or stop signs on where it intersected with a main road back in the 70s.
Great. Thank you for the info 🙏
Yep the town of Ayr has a number of give way to the right intersections in it.
Thanks for helping me understand. I literally got stuck with the part where you are at a cross road an the car on the opposite end wants to turn right an i also want turn right. Ive now learned if the road is narrow some1 has to be the nice 1 to let them pass. And if its a bigger space you can both pass without cliding.
I would really love if you were to do a video where you are driving in this situation.
its help a lot for me thank u🥰
Thank you my friend. It is important for me to know how to drive in AUS because I wasn't born there
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful 🙂
Thanks for the video. There is a 4 way stop sign in Ipswich, I will be doing my P's test in the coming months in Ipswich. Supposedly it's one of the only ones in Queensland itself.
You're welcome. Ah, yes, I came to know about that after publishing this video. Good luck with your driving test 🤞
Thanks a lot it was great
Thanks dear
thanks a lot
This video is very informative
Glad to hear that. Thank you 😊🙏
This video is very helful thank you very much sir
You're welcome. Glad you find this helpful. 🙏🙂
sooo good......
I just want to ask something and know if there is a car parked on the left and you pass, do you have to indicate right and when you pass the car indicate left again and return to your lane?
If there are lanes, yes. If there is no lane, no; Only checking mirrors is fine
Thanks EMU
For the 4 Stop signs intersection, there is one at ipswich test centre area , Delacy St and Smith St 😁
Ah thank you. I'll check that out 🙂
@@drivingtestaustralia Ipswich area must like them, there's another one at Hayes St and Bourke St in Brassall.
@@morbau11 Thank you for the information. I found it on the map. Yes, apparently Ipswich likes 4 way stop signs 😄
Great video. For the driving commentary at the end of the video, are you checking your rear view mirror every time you slow down to turn? Are you also required to check side mirrors before turning onto another road? Thank you!!
That's correct. With every turn, we check the rear view and side mirror (the side we are turning to)
@@drivingtestaustralia thank you - a bit irrelevant to the video sorry! My test is in a few weeks, and your videos have already been super helpful as a refresher
Great vid but I think you missed a critical rule that catches people out all the time. When turning left from a slip lane you must give way to everyone including an opposite direction vehicle turning right.
Thank you. This video is only about intersections in residential areas. Slip lane is a different topic. Video of that coming soon
Excluding anyone performing a u-turn. They must give way to everyone.
7:40 sick drift
One rule I need to get clear about for which I failed once. When turning right at uncontrolled traffic what give way rules applied? Whether we need to wait until 2 sides no incoming vehicle or in emergency if we enter and can wait in middle of intersection to give away left vehicle after crossing right one?
Nice
Some additional give way rules based on experience; 1) Trucks apparently do not have to give way when they are supposed to. The more beat up and old looking the truck, the more likely this will be. 2) Tradesman's Utes apparently do not have to give way when they are supposed to. The more beat up and old looking the Ute, the more likely this will be. 3) White vans with plumbing pipes on one side of the roof are apparently free to disobey any road rule they please at any time. 4) Cyclists wearing skin suits are apparently free to disobey any road rule they please at any time. 5) All of the above are apparently required by law to hurl abuse at you, when they do the wrong thing. Be aware of these important rules to be a safer driver.
I noticed that you seldom made any shoulder check while driving in these roads. Does that mean you were always on a one lane per side road so no need head check when you turned left or right?
That's right. Shoulder checks are only for wide roads when you move over to the left or right to turn and there might be another road user in your blind spot that you might run into. On narrow roads, you don't need to do shoulder check for turns
another four way stop at Clarendon St and Dickson Ave, Artarmon. But no-one knows what to do! They shouldn't have these unless it's clearer in the road rules.
Hey mate just passed my test to get my permit and I got a dumb question. In driving, I understand that 'giving way' rules are crucial at intersections, as highlighted in a video I watched. However, I'm curious about other scenarios where these rules apply. Could you list ALL different situations or locations, apart from intersections, where 'giving way' rules are important for drivers? For instance, in phrases like 'Giving way rules at ...', could you give me a list of all the other words that could complete this sentence?
Congrats for passing your driving test and yes, sure. That needs a dedicated long video. Watch this space
@@drivingtestaustralia Thanks mate. Arguably the one thing im most scared about before going out on the road is the giving way rules. That makes up most of the driving theory bulk right? Apart from knowing how to drive an actual car
@@samtheham3187 You're welcome. Yes absolutely. Give Way rules are very important to know.
So your "Give Way" sign is mostly the same as our "Yield" sign? Also driving on the left looks so weird. I never even thought you would have your signs on the opposite sides of the road as well.
Yes,'give way' is the same as 'yield'. There are quite a few countries that drive on the left side
How about runabout rules ?
That needs a dedicated video. Stay tuned
Different states, different rules
These rules are nationwide
What if there are no lines at all?
Give way to your right

Come to church rd yarram and teach the drivers from devon nth what a fruit caking stop sign is. Please.
bruh ipswich is full of 4 way stop signs
Yes, I became aware of two of them after publishing this video 🙂
I have the right of way. End of story 😎
No one has right of way under australian road traffic act.
i got a fault for stopping trying to give way for a pedestrian at a 4 way intersection and i don’t understand why 🥲
It depends where the pedestrian have been at that situation and which direction you have been travelling. Cannot really comment as the scenario is not very clear
@@drivingtestaustralia was just about to cross from the right of us and we were turning right
@@kadayeu You should have just hit them 🤷
@@Olly328 i really shouldve. after my second attempt with no faults even though i drove exactly the same i find it hard to believe that tester was fair
