Like looking for lost treasure? There's no need to break the bank for a high-end metal detector - just dig through your junk drawer!
Step 1: Disassemble the CD case
Carefully disassemble the CD case by removing the insert that holds the CD in place.
Step 2: Cut Velcro pieces
On your radio, measure out an area centered on the back of the radio. Then cut a hook and loop piece of Velcro the same size.
Step 3: Mount the radio
Stick one side of the Velcro to the back of the radio, and stick the other piece of Velcro to one side of the CD case. Then mount the radio.
Step 4: Mount the calculator
Repeat the same process with the calculator, and apply the Velcro to the other side of the CD case. Then mount the calculator.
Step 5: Set radio
Make sure the radio is set to the AM band and turn it on. Now tune it on to the highest end of the AM band, but not directly at a broadcast station. Turn the volume up and all you should hear is static.
Tip
If there is a broadcast station at the very high end of the AM band, get as close as you can so you're just hearing static.
Step 6: Fold CD case
With the calculator on, start folding the CD case until you hear a loud tone. That tone is the electronic circuit in the calculator. It's producing a radio frequency signal that the AM radio is picking up.
Step 7: Move toward metal object
Now slowly open up the case again until you can barely hear the loud tone. Then start moving your radio and calculator close to a metal object, and you're hear the loud tone again. Now the next time you drop something valuable, get your homemade metal detector and find it!
Did You Know?
In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell used one of the first metal detectors to try and locate a bullet in President James Garfield's chest. He was unsuccessful because the metal bed Garfield was on confused the detector.
though I had some problem with sea water It also kzhead.infoUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH land for finding any things very easily. (thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn
i actually learned this when i was watching Curious George :)
TheYoshiBrawler same Oh wait this was posted 8 years aho
Lol i am here because of curious george
Kipkay and Howcast?! Two of the most addictive how to channels meet for one video. Fantastic

What.... Why is Kipkay on Howcast? O.o
Ikr
Wtf is Kipkay?
@@stanleycrookshank No. Why would i ask otherwise?
I love how at the end he finds his long-lost "valuable" penny.
If i increase power source...is it possible to get better results??? and would it increase magnetic field???? depth...etc...
Kipkay
Easier way: 1: Get your smartphone 2: Go to app store. 3. Search for metal detector 4: Install it.
Don't bother unless your seeking an object you can see and is a mere inch from the phone. Smartphone apps, metal detectors do not work well. Some have trippy moving coloured lines.
@@2DGraphicDesign Did you seriously reply to a 6 year old comment? Damn I forgot I posted this.
@@Sheb8795 I did indeed! Lol! Developers must have produced better metal detector apps way back then.
it only pick up the magnetic fields of objects
@Howcast can i use phone radio or mp3 radio reply plz
@w0lsky you can use other materials than velcro, you just want to be able to stick the radio and calculator to the CD case
does it have to be a handheld rsdio
Im fairly certain that the detector that is featured in the beginning of this video is the Harbor Freight 6 function detector. Its 35$ .... probably about the same as the cd case/radio/Velcro/calculator contraption.
where to find that kind of calcu and radio
Even i failed to get any sound both in fm or am mode.. Is there any special kind of radio or calculator?? kindly help...
how strong is it;;; how depp must the metal be in order to detect it...
whats the depth range on it?
ok i have a problem i try it whit 2 3 diffrent calculators and 1 radio.I put the radio on AM and the calculator near the radio and nothing hapens .... i tried whit the radio on FM and the same result nothing hapend. Is there a special calculator and radio or every type works?!

@asdfasd705 possibly so you can remove the radio and calculator easily if you want to close the case or use either of them. without leaving tape glue all over them.
Am I doing this wrong because I'm not picking up anything like coins I placed on the ground. What's the "passing over metal" supposed to sound like?
on every am channel has something broadcasting.Does anyone know how to solve that problem?

@HyperGolem It'll cost like 2 bucks... It's not some fancy radio, just a regular radio u could get at a pharmacy or garage sale or something. The calc would cost a buck too...

whats kipkay doing on howcast
Does it work?
is that kipkay?
We have metal detectors where I work. All of the packages of food pass through them. I asked a maintance person how they work, his reply, they are just a radio and a transmitter, the metal interfers with the radio waves. The computer detects a change and shuts off the conveyor.
Can you use glue instead of Velcro?
Damn it !! I just bought a $300 metal detector two days ago, and NOW i see this.
how much is 10 danisk kroners??
I needed this to find a throwing knife i lost in the grass, thanks!

@FlazeTheHedgehog1 yes he sounds like one thx for agreeing
@MSxGirl03 you could use tape

Instead of using Velcro, you can use double-sided tape
Anybody else notice, he always uses that wood table to work on.
