  • If one of your friends is a fly fishing enthusiast, strike up a conversation about fly fishing. Chances are good you can borrow gear for a day or two. Waders and boots can sometimes be rented from a local fly shop. The first couple days on the water is unlikely to be fun and relaxing so set realistic expectations and approach the first fishing like any sport..... learning basic mechanics and practicing. Having help from an experienced fly caster can be very helpful if you know someone or can afford a couple lessons. Keep it simple and just enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Thicker tippet is easier to cast and not tangle and may be a good choice (eg-3x) so you can focus on your casting and spend less time fussing with tangles. Once you have a serviceable cast you can get into thinner tippet and longer leaders that fish are less likely to see.

  • Great video. I've never fly fished before... What do you do after the cast? Let it float? Do you reel it right back in? Slow and steady? Or sporadically? Is the idea that the fish will strike as soon as it hits the surface? Ie. at what point is the cast dead, if ever?

    @peterson994@peterson9946 жыл бұрын
    • peterson994 yes its best if you try to let the line straighten out before you send your line first, also moving your rod from the 1-2 o clock area( behind ur head) to 10-11 o clock area(in front of your head)

    @Vera-xu3xw@Vera-xu3xw5 жыл бұрын
    • I'm not related to this video in any way. But, TFO and Orvis both make good starter kits. About $200 and $150 respectively. They are both complete ready to fish and good starter sets. A good starter weight rod would be a 6. Unless you bass fish or saltwater then I would suggest an 8 weight. Otherwise a 6 is good for most smaller fish. It will be slightly over what you need for really small fish/flies.

  • Tom, do we really need more pressure on our precious finite resources? Do you really want to go to your favorite stream stretch, only to find someone there before you? Do you like to go fishing next to other obnoxious anglers, elbow to elbow? I love everything about fly fishing; from its history, its tradition, to the solitude I find in the beautiful outdoors. The latter is a huge aspect which attracts me to this way of life. Yes, I’m being selfish but you, in the fly fishing industrial complexe, you’re being greedy and that’s way worse and irresponsible.
