We dragged this Scotia Blue Volvo 242 from the woods about 2 months ago. a friend and long time Volvo nut is interested in trading for another car but ALSO is throwing a crawfish boil just for fun!
Why not resurrect this 242 and drive it to him!!!

Somewhere in Sweden, there's a statute of Dean being erected due to his dedication to the Volvo marque That car was definitely worth saving 👍🏼
Now THAT would be something!
@@DeanofMachines it's got to happen!!!! The Volvo suits need to recognise the effort 🫶🏼
@@itsmephil2255 SHeesh, I hope they don't notice me! With their track record they'll shut my whole channel down for saying the world VOLVO
@@DeanofMachines you are an ambassador for the brand my friend 😂
As a Swede, I'm happy to see all 240 on your years. Even a Volvo 220 (in Sweden we say Amazon). I was growing up in a Volvo 220 and later a Volvo 244 but the same color and it was from 1983. Memories....
Welcome to the fleet! People love these old cars and I love sharing them with the world!
dont you mean 122? my amazons says 121 and 122 in their papers
@@Alphieboy The 220 is the wagon chassis code even though the 122 badge is on the fender.
@@DeanofMachines oooh, okay, yea never had any amazon wagons before, they’re quite rare and expensive here😅
The first car I bought with earned money was a 1978 242GT someone ordered chocolate brown & then decided “nope” - I got it for 2% over cost at $8200. Great car. Thank you for saving this one!
The brown ones are an acquired taste! I would still rock one though. Thanks for checking out the channel!!
Yeah I was eating when that sender assembly came out of the tank
Out comes the brown stuff!!
That car is absolutely worth saving! This bertone with the 4 cylinder is a very solid car if you can get it running and driving again! I always wanted one of these cars myself! My grandfather had a 1988 Volvo 240 sedan in white with the blue cloth interior. His was an automatic and he bought it new back in 1988. In the 10 years he owned it he drove 342k with that car. It was a great car!
The 240 is possibly one of the best cars ever built!! Which Bertone are you talking about?
@@DeanofMachines the blue coupe in this video that you resurrected. Any 200 or 700 series Volvo coupe that was made is a Bertone car and those were manufactured in Italy. They also made them with a 6 cylinder engine which was also used in the DeLoreans and a Diesel engine as well. I’m told that the 6 cylinder and the diesel engines were not that great at least not here in the states. But the four-cylinder is always a buy.
@@mds2465 I don’t think that is correct. In the US we did get a Bertone 242c which was a weird optioned 2 door that was made by Bertone. Then we also had the normal 242s that were not Italian made.
not a bertone, bertone had a completly different roof
This is A regular 2 door 240. Aka a 242. Made in sweden. Bertone is something else.
Great stuff Dean, looking forward to the video of what you bring home !
It’s a long ways down on the list of things right now. It is on the list though!!
Hehe, here in Sweden it is obligatory to have that triangle in working in order to pass MOT.
Really? That's interesting! Now I need to keep it around!
How do you feel about MOT and inspections being required there? Where I live there’s absolutely nothing, which makes it very easy to drive old cars or modify cars. But it also means an huge amount of unsafe cars are on the road along with me.
You get used to it hehe, cars that is 30 years old does have MOT every two years and 60 year old cars does not required at all. As you mentioned about safty. One of my Volvos is going to inspection today acctually *fingers crossed*
@@obesepersonthink it's good, it keeps all cars on the road up to a minimum standard. They are mostly checking safety features, brakes etc..
I had an 88 345DL. I still miss that car. Built like a tank !
Easily the best car ever! Thats why I save them.
Great video man! Love this car! It’s a survivor that’s for sure.
Thanks Mark! It surely surprised me!
Nice work Dean!
Thank you! Cheers!
I've heard an engine coughing but in this case the sneeze @ 18:53 did the trick!
It sure seems like it doesn't it!?
Hi watching here in the UK 🇬🇧 love that you rescue old volvos I have a 2001 v70 that is my work car and she is a fantastic car to drive I put tools timber in it basically I use her like a van She's done nearly 200.000 miles still runs like a watch doesn't use oil or coolants does 26 mpg (UK gallons 4.55 litres) So I'm subscribed and like all your videos 😊
Thanks for the love my friend! A Volvo wagon is the perfect work rig!!
Gesundheit Dean! Wow 🤩 indeed! Another beauty, and she runs nice! And rust wise she’s also in good shape! She sounds sporty. The square tires fits to shape of the body😂😂😂 Brave man , driving on the fast lane 💪 Amazing that she drives so good after so many years standing still ! Here in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 it’s prohibited to drive without plates, insurance and MOT! The “Ole lady” did very well 👍🏻👍🏻 The crawfish look amazing 🤤🤤! 👍🏻👍🏻 🆙 like allways Dean!
Hi Arie!! This little blue car had the most square wheels I've ever experienced!
It didn’t show at all while you took it for a test drive!😂😂😂
@@arieplomp8906 The ole lady said she liked those tires!
I bet she does! 😂😂😂 She better buckels up other wise she slides of her seat after a few minutes! But she allways steps out of the car with a big smile! You better get rid of them, other wise you’ll lose your main job😜
Of course I'd save it. I'm betting it just needs gas and a fresh battery and it'll just run.
Hi from the UK. I have been subscribed a while and love the work you do. Have you thought about having a parts shelf so you don't keep pinching parts that you'd have to replace at a later time.
Hey there! I do actually have a stash of parts. I try to keep some things on hand such as fuel pumps and filters., timing belts, accessory belts, spark plugs, oil filters and things that are common across all redblocks.
Well done! Best regards from Sweden
Thank you! Cheers!
@@DeanofMachines while I still have your attention, would be amazing to se a collab with Derek at VGG! I'm also a car rescuer here in Sweden. Sadly it's illegal to drive a car that's not inspected (oldtimers need to get inspected every 2 years) if it's over 50 years old it just needs one inspection and its inspected for life tho.. untill police says otherwise. Then it's one more inspection. But I'm driving rescued oldtimers anyways sometimes.. gotta love sketchy roadtrips 😊
@@starslav It would be fun to collab with Derek, he's only about 4 hours from me. I think my channel is still too small for him to take the time. Maybe some day! If you ever end up in the USA we can get you in some junk Volvos and driving illegally!! American people LOVE their illegal activities!
@@DeanofMachines channel size don't matter. In my opinion. It's the man, or woman. Behind the channel that matters! Hellooooo Sweden!! 940's are really cool!!
Runs good!
I was very impressed with this one!!
Oh wow the post wash reveal 🍻 I've also had that damn fuse walk out. What a terrible design decision.
Its a very good looking car! The wiring jumper was swapped out for actual alligator clips for the trip.
@@DeanofMachines Certainly does look good. Hope the new owners have a purpose for it. Oh I mean that damn underhood blade fuse holder. It's a bad design. Even the reproduction harnesses keep it
@@POVwithRC why would they do such a thing??
@POVwithRC believe it or not they FINALLY did away with the underhood engine management fuse on LH3.1 cars, relocated behind the plastic trim on the driver A pillar, much better decision

Helloooo Marcin! This car is one of my all time favorites. The overall look is FANTASTIC! I should make a belt squeal ASMR compilation and play it on a loud speaker whenever the lawn care enthusiasts are at it.
@@DeanofMachines yess! Just do it!
Another 242, seems like they're becoming more popular again? For a while, I was only seeing 245 wagons and 244 sedans, I've always preferred the 2 doors, but then we're not hauling kids or lots of back seat riders. Really enjoy the channel, happy to see your better half helping out. Looking forward to seeing the 242 Turbo progress as well as the new acquisition if you snag the red 242 flathood.
I don’t know if they are more popular or I just happen to know where many of them are within a 4 hour drive from me!
Handsome understated coupe
This 242 is one of my favorites for sure
Nice car, great video
Thank you J! It was a fun little road trip.
Bravo on making it the whole way there after sitting in the woods for who knows how long!! The only thing I would have done different is to T in the return line before the click clack inlet.
I thought about that for a bit. I decided it would be better to have the constant suction from the boat tank down to the inline pump.
Putting it between the pumps has the potential to create an over pressure loop and the only way to remedy it is go full throttle and kill the clicker. If you put it before the clicker, it will only pull what it needs from both sources. We did this on an excavator and it started pushing fuel out of the factory transfer pump because the injection pump couldn’t eat the fuel fast enough unless you were at working the engine hard. Also, I am SO jealous you got to eat crawfish! I haven’t had any since I moved from south east texas about 20 years ago.
Not just driving but left lane driving!
Passing them slow pokes! This car was NICE down the highway!
You are to Volvos like the Resurrection Ship is to the Cylons!!
Keeping them alive! It's really my only goal!
If ya get it running ta hell with 200 miles, times by 10, loved my old 142 beast.
I just needed to get somewhere to eat some crawfish!
My friends house was only 200 miles away
You got an uncanny skill of finding Volvos without any floor rust, but i bet it would fail hard here in Sweden, nothing is rust free here LOL
If you go back a couple episodes, the silver 740 was quite rusted out. I typically only buy cars with good floors. Also, the blue wagon has no floors...
fantastic colour
Without a doubt. By far its my favorite!!
One day Dean you will pick your favourite 240 and restore it to new condition. I'll wait.
When the money is there for it, I will do it!!
It was my dream when I was a kid, but I ended up with XC90 brand new in the year 2013😍 very great machinery.
You could possibly get one today!
I think your house is now becoming Volvo heaven. Also since you had to jump off the pumps to keep the car running you probably just needed a fuel pump relay.
Maybe more of Volvo purgatory! I try to send them back into the world!
@@DeanofMachines a lot of times on those cars the fuel pump fuse under the hood over by the driver side is subject to water contamination, and just rots away. Most guys replace those things with waterproof fuses so it never becomes a problem again.
@@mds2465 thats very true!
Im Sweden we call that blue color “Kommunalblå” it translates to Municipal blue 😄
I'm not even going to try and pronounce that. HAAA!!

Super Gubbebil!! (Old Man Car) Well worth getting right. Great looking car

Hey Dean, In your capacity as Volvo GURU, I have a question. On the timing belt cover there is a bloody great red sticker with the number 803 on it. What is the 803 about? I have asked other experts but got crickets in reply. It's got to mean something or Volvo would not have put it there. Anticipating your infinite wisdom. Cheers.
Great question! It's my understanding that it is the last 3 digits of the engine part number. Do I know this as fact? No. Have I heard other things? Yes. Hard to verify when people like me take covers from other engines and use them when their cover gets beat up.
thanks for that. it's surprising that such a prominent number should be so mysterious.@@DeanofMachines
@@DeanofMachines Correct! It's the last three digits in the engine part number.

Yeah it's pretty nice! Just needs a little love.
@@DeanofMachines most of the 242 models are has been rebuild to be Rally Cars here in Sweden. The 2 door version is lighter than 4 doors.
of course it does, it's a Volvo
This car was at a place known for broken Volvos to be sitting. They would end up there typically so they could be repaired. It was surprising this one ran!
When I got my Volvo all it needed was an Alternator in tank pump and a fuel pump relay.
These cars USUALLY need a fuel pump. It's kind of silly to be honest.
@@DeanofMachines For real there has got to be a long term fix for that.

That’s a product called purple power!
Volvos don’t rust and deteriorate like other cars. Built in quality and the best paint in the business.
That my friend is untrue! We’ve had quite a few rusty cars on the channel!
How long has this Volvo been abandoned or sittin?
This one was sitting 15 years. I'm impressed it ran so well!
