  • I'm planning to get one pretty soon... Never had a Mastiff before, I've had working type rottweilers for the past 16 years and been active in the Schutzhund comp scene, but after my last boy Rollo died I just can't see me finding one as special as he was again. He was just peak rotty, everyone loved him, from my 5yo niece to my 93yo Nanna and he was a loaded weapon if I told him to be... But you could take him to pick up the kids from school and down to the shops for pats. He was just perfect. Only problem with him was, walking down the street with an adult rottweiler like that brings A LOT of attention and I'm sure a Boerboel Mastiff will bring even more. Seriously it's like going out with a freakin' rockstar. But it's good for me, I live with PTSD and it really helps me socialise. This time, I don't really have the same kind of time to spend on the clubs and comps and it's not as though I ever needed a guard dog. I'm just very busy with my work, but I need a big sweet boy to come along with me to my office and chill, come for walks with me and my daughter's miniature foxy in the huge campus we're located in (she'll be boss dog tho, Lexi's mean 🙄) or the forest behind my house and just be there for me when I need centering... And of course be prepared for a whole lot of socialising and even more hugs from the all the folks and dogs he's gonna be meeting day to day. After a lot of research and meeting different dogs and owners, I think a Boerboel is the right choice for me. We'll probably go so far as to register him as a service animal and put him through the correct courses we have in my state, I've got some insurance funding and a breeder who's willing to participate. So I'm ready, I'll be naming him Cecil and can't freakin' wait!

    • I'm super happy for you! As an owner of two boerboels I have some tips. First of all the guarding instinct can't be separated from a boerboel, it comes pre installed and doesn't need to be learned. Actually most of the challenge of training a boerboel is getting them to turn their guarding instinct off. This mostly comes down to getting them to trust your authority enough to let their guard down. This involves being very strict with your obedience training and not letting the dogs push your boundaries or disobey commands. The more love you give them the better, but it should be accompanied by strict training. Boerboels, unlike other mastiffs are working dogs, they have seemingly limitless energy and are super eager to please (to the point where beyond the learning stage you may not even need treats to train them.) The best way I can describe their personality is a mix between a Pit Bull and a Belgian Malinois. So the more work you give them the happier they will be (just stay away from explosive exercise for the first 2 years their bones grow faster then the tendons can keep up and they can pull a muscle sprinting, favor steady state cardio until they fully mature, so walks are good, but no runs.) The reason they need to respect your authority is that if they may deem you unable to defend yourself. There is a risk of them trying to protect you when you don't need protecting, and becoming hyper alert, oftentimes boerboel aggression is the result of them being hyper protective of their incompetent owners (as a Rottweiler owner this shouldn't be a problem for you). Boerboels are also Velcro dogs, I cannot state this enough, they need companionship they do NOT do well left alone for long periods of time they want to be with you at ALL times, washing dishes, changing oil, tying your shoes? Doesn't matter to your boerboel it's the most exciting thing in the world. It's important to develop physical boundaries and personal space with your dog. They need to be taught gentle play, if not for you then for any children the dog will encounter. I once dropped my phone and when I bent to pick it up my dog leapt up to lick my face and hit my nose so hard with his head it started pouring blood. I was laughing, but for a kid this could result in a lifetime fear of dogs. Lastly boerboel can be nervous as puppies so make sure to expose them to as much unfamiliar stimulus as possible. This is by far the most important thing, boerboels are naturally attentive and suspicious of new things, they cannot be won over by juicy steak by a stranger like other dogs can. If they go on lots of adventures as puppies that continue into adulthood they will be rock solid. But if they rarely leave the house and yard they will become deadly. This is non negotiable. If you can't socialize them every other day or so do not get them. Boerboels have zero hesitation trucking a grown man, even with zero training they will not hesitate or backpedal like other dogs. An aggressive and poorly trained boerboel WILL kill humans. Socialization goes for all dogs but the risk with boerboels is way higher you must always be present the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth time strangers come to the house. Basically boerboels done right are the best dog you can get boerboels done wrong are the worst. I wrote all this not because I think you are incompetent, I think as a Rottweiler owner you are up for the challenge. However I made mistakes I had to correct on the fly and I tried to write down everything useful so you could have a smother ride than I did. Overall boerboels are the best dogs I have ever owned and despise all the work I regret nothing.

    • @@Mushroom-1233I know this is kinda elementary... But it's all about the socialisation, the environment and the experience and expertise of the handler. A large working breed like this is the most advanced type of dog and the highest level of responsibility. If anyone has to ask "are they right for me?" The answer is "absolutely NOT!" I always tell folks who ask my advice to get a jack Russell terrier, they're hilarious, don't eat much, they're easy to own if you're not ready for such a big responsibility and they entertain themselves most of the time. Okay our one is a bit mean, but she's got some sort of mental illness or something. She's actually missing her tail because she went for a red heeler and I had to save her dumb*ass, cost me $6k in surgeries. I've tried everything with her and she just doesn't care... Seriously she's just dick, more like a cat than a dog... But she ain't carrying a toddler off any time soon, that's what I'm getting at and people think it's kinda funny not terrifying. Our rottweiler was actually frightened of her, he'd always have one eye on her and it was kinda funny in hindsight. If it were the other way around, we'd have had a real problem on our hands. I'm one of those unpopular people in the dog club scene who thinks they're should be a licencing system for dogs and large working types should be very, very difficult to obtain a licence for. Like I have the highest type of heavy vehicle licence available in Australia and it was very, very difficult to obtain and because they're a HUGE responsibility. I can drive 75m long, 170t behemoths on the same roads as families going on holidays and you can see why they wanna be sure you know what you're doing... Just like a Rottweiler is, or a Boerboel Mastiff, for example, people should know what they're doing before handling one. Hope anyone reading this gets some food for thought, it's no joke, they can and DO kill people.

Technically only one standard. And even dogs bred to the proper standard can end up outside and above the normal max 110 weight. But it's in proportions and typically means like 140 range at max.
