My white liberal friends, during the BLM riots, called me racist when I shared such memes. Then, recently, I had African American students tell me I couldn't listen to blues and jazz music because I'm white. I was teaching an immersive unit on the Harlem Renaissance and its influence on American culture. Sadly, the students didn't know a single thing about Harlem and the Renaissance. I had to teach it to them. Yet, they call me racist.
I don't think not knowing certain things about other areas or ppl makes you racist. I'm guessing if I run next door and ask my black neighbor about Nashville, the Grand ol Opry and the early country stars....Ill get a blank stare. In the movie, "42" (Jackie Robinson), Branch Rickey tells Jackie about seeing a white kid emulating his moves. The point was that the kid admired Jackie for his skill and style, and didn't care the slightest about color. "A Raisin in the Sun" (Sidney Poitier, great movie) is about a family coming into an inheritance, and struggling with how to use it. They are black, but that has little importance to the story except for one thing near the end of the movie. They are just a family with human struggles that anyone can identify with. It's the generational differences (parents, children, grandmother) and human struggles that take center stage (or did for me). My point? Either you get it already, or you won't.

When I was growing up, the American "idea" was that we were a melting pot, presuming that the US was different than other nations/cultures and worthy of celebration. Somewhere along the way that changed. Then we were a salad, where we were all together, but retained our unique cultural/ethnic/religious identities.
