  • If I'm being honest, as much as I'd love to see more of this character, having his comic book history being so short somehow makes everything around him feel even more poignant and hit you even harder. He's not some comic book superhero who died and came back from the dead a dozen times after fighting aliens and demon lords. He's a noble man who fought for what he believed in in spite of the racism, discrimination, the unjust world around him and the horrible things he had to endure. Isaiah Bradley deserves more love.

  • Even though it's slightly different in the MCU, his origin is still messed up, in some parts worse. He was in the Korean War instead fighting The Winter Soldier, but instead of making him a hero, they lock him up longer than the comic, and make him a MCU Henrietta Lacks. What's even sadder, no one knows who he is or was in comparison. We're so getting Eli's Patriot later on, but would still love to see Carl Lumbly beat Bucky up in Korea in something.

    • It’s probably the most controversial Captain America story ever published (yes, including the time he got turned into Hydra Cap). It’s got less to do with Isaiah’s blackness than with the horrors he went through. Captain America is supposed to symbolize America at its best, and confronting the ugliness of American racism within that framework was too much for some people. The worst part is a lot of those a-holes think they’ve won due to complicated copyright stuff keeping Isaiah out of the comics for a while now. Since he’s made it to the MCU, I can only assume it’s been sorted out.

    • It'd be one hell of a way to introduce mutants and Wolverine if they continue with the story. The Weapon X or Plus program started with Captain America and based on that success the military and government continues. Wolverine is a result of the 10th iteration of that program and Deadpool somewhere in between or after. There are so many screwed stories and characters that can be introduced along the way. At some point the Weapon X/Plus program introduces a weaponized religion which I don't think would ever show up on film but it'd a hell of a thing to see if it ever did.

  • For those confused about the timeline of events, let me clear them up. Isaiah and his platoon were experimented on BEFORE Steve Rogers was given the Super Soldier Serum the the effects of the imperfect version affecting his mental capacities later in life. For the in-universe Captain America comics, as seen in in Truth #4, they were released a full year before Steve's first mission as Captain America as propaganda from the US, presumably while he was training. To the best of my knowledge, Isaiah took Steve's costume before Rogers had a chance to wear it for his maiden mission. EDIT: Okay. It has come to my attention that this was retconned in History of the Marvel Universe #2 in 2019 and that Isaiah was made into an attempt to recreate the serum. That's totally my bad for not being as thorough as I normally am for my content, especially since I read HotMU as it came out. I'll address this in my upcoming video about the history of every Captain America.

    • The beginning of Truth takes place during Pearl Harbor, and Captain America #1 takes place before that point (before the U.S. officially enters the war.), and in universe issues of cap #1 are read by background characters during this scene. HtMU doesn't retcon this, this has always been the case in 616 and Kyle Baker himself confirms this, in interviews around the time, as well as in the 2004 trade paperback of truth. This is just semantics though, and none of this should lessen the impact of the atrocities committed by the U.S. government on African American troops.

    • Yep. A lot of things like that happened. People hear about wild conspiracy theories that circulate amongst black Americans even today about things like being secretly microchipped by the government at birth, etc. and don’t understand that it’s simply the result of repeated revelations of institutionalized racism, horrific stuff like those experiments. If I was black, I would find it tough to fully trust my government if they’d spent most of the past century carrying out various tortures, denying black Americans their rights, and moreover never seeming to have even a handful of black Americans in positions of power. And the century before THAT enslaving people with my skin color. After all that, people still can’t manage to understand why black Americans tend to be distrustful of even the police. Racism is just an issue too many prefer to treat as if it stopped existing entirely 60 years ago.

  • One thing of note is that the comics soft-retconned events. Isiah still took took the Captain America suit so he was the first Captain America, though not officially, but his formula didn't lead into Steve's. Erskine (under the alias of Dr. Reinstein) had completed the formula on his own and Steve was the first and only person that formula was used on since Erskine was killed right after without informing anyone of how he did it. The experiments the Isiah was forced into now happened after this as an attempt to recreated the formula used on Steve, conducted by another man using the Reinstein moniker (This one being Wilfred Nagel who just appeared Falcon and the Winter Soldier). It's just that like in the First Avenger movie, the government didn't send Steve into the field right away since he was their only Super Soldier. And Marvel has stuck to this being the order of Events, in the 2019-2020 Complete History of the Marvel Universe book it's mentioned that Isiah got his serum after Steve. I'm sure there are people who like the idea of perfect Steve having a darker origin to his powers, but honestly this makes more sense. Had the government been monitoring the experiments the whole time, one guy dying shouldn't have stopped them from being able to perfect it, so having Isiah be part of an attempt to recreate it works better in the grand scheme of things.

    @AussieDragoon@AussieDragoon3 жыл бұрын

    • Even in ‘Truth’ the timeline of Steve’s serum predates Isaiah’s by a year, and canonically Steve was a member on the Invaders (as the first Captain America) in Dec ‘41 before Isaiah even joined the military in Feb ‘42. Some of the story beats in ‘Truth’ got a little messy since it was injected into the main continuity when it wasn’t originally intended to be - but the timeline still evens out.

      @sthbmc5963@sthbmc59633 жыл бұрын
    • Honestly, I think it's a cowardly move to have the events of Truth take place after Steve gets the serum, as opposed to before. It hits a lot closer to home to have the American government attempt the serum on the "disposables" first before they attempt to give it to their blond haired blue eyed poster child.

      @seandabest4329@seandabest43293 жыл бұрын
    • @@seandabest4329 He might have had blonde hair and blue eyes, but he was anything but a poster child when they administered the serum. After, yes. Before he was a 4f waste of space they had no use for and was more than expendable. If you think about, there was no way he'd have gotten the chance if there was verifiable proof of concept prior to his injection. Having the events of Truth happen post Rogers success and Erskine's death as an attempt to recreate the fluke might be "cowardly", but it's also more realistic.

Which would explain why the Cap comics would exist while he did. Though maybe I am wrong. I really have no clue. Kinda hard to get comics in the UK since Manchester doesn't have any comic book shops around where I live.

    • Nope you’re right. Steve got the formula, there weren’t really any kinks with it, it was gonna be risky anyway, but Steve still got it first. After Dr. Erskine was assassinated and the serum’s formula was lost, the government pretty much took whatever notes he left and tried to make their own by experimenting on the 300 African American soldiers they forced into the program to recreate Steve. In the notes section for Isaiah Bradley’s page in the Marvel wiki I believe the writer of Truth explains that it was originally out of continuity, but then it was confirmed it was canon later, and that by the 5th or 6th issue it was stated Steve was already Cap/injected beforehand.

      @herebejamz@herebejamz3 жыл бұрын
    • I get where you're coming from, but I don't think that the artistic decision was meant to be exploitative. Genres like Classic Jazz and Hip-Hop hold a pretty special place in the African American community, and a lot of songs carry a lot of history and stories that can be pretty powerful when it comes to acknowledging problems and what goes on in the world, especially things in history. I guess it's kind of like how folk songs and a lot of other genres of music are used to tell stories of our ancestors and things like that. So, I don't think the decision was made to be exploitative, I think it was intentionally made to be something that people could visually associate with something modern like hip-hop and lead them down the rabbit hole and see just how many real issues this comic was trying to address. Like, I don't think this was an ignorant or random decision, I think it was deliberately made to get the audience thinking. I could be wrong, but that's my take-away from the whole situation.

As cool as it would be if Isaiah was the first he isn't, he did steal Cap's uniform and I think Cap's shield too? • I've always thought "Truth: RW&B" was fantastic, and you did a helluva job of summarizing the tragic tale here. I originally stumbled upon it out of a fondness for Kyle Baker's art, though I never thought of it as "hip-hop" -- sure, he did the "Break The Chain!" hip-hop comic with KRS-One for Marvel Music (yes, there really was a Marvel Music line!) but he also did a long run on Plastic Man for DC, which is as white as comics get! As far as the links to buy copies, your viewers are lucky, as "Truth" was out of print and damn near impossible to find in any form for a number of years -- good to know that it (as well as Isaiah Bradley) is finally getting some much-deserved respect! (But what's the story on Robert Morales? Did he ever write *any* other comics???)
