Dear Jeff I enjoyed reviewing this race footage with you from my antipodean shores. It seems to be the largest and most eagerly anticipated crossover event in recent cycling (or maybe global) history. Kind regards Lanterne
You're a crowd pleaser. Let's give them what they want 👍
only 19.070 to go, let's do it boys
Praise be.
LR, You are Genius!!!
The most boring voice in cycling commentary. Thanks for the nap.
When your two favorite cycling channels make a collab
Can't believe they collab f yes
This was a lot of fun, won't be our last collaboration

I was the Rogue rider that “put on an Oscar performance”. I ride with LJ pretty frequently, and he is a much smaller rider than me, so when he was doing 35W behind me, I was still putting in an effort, but LJ being half my size, got a huge draft. My goal was to give my teammate enough of a gap to take it to the finish, but he unfortunately got chased down.
I said it there this morning and I’ll say it here now: “It's funny, when LR burst onto the scene this year, I immediately thought - "finally, someone who is filling the need for NorCal-level detailed analysis but of the world tour ranks." You guys really are the best.”
wish it were possible for european amateur races too, the flat american crits are so different to the races over here
The best two cycling channels on youtube.
Algorithm doping, LoL. That's why I'm subbed to both channels
Some races have a lead car for safety concerns with traffic entering race courses, I have seen a fair amount of people ignoring barriers and driving on to crit courses
I was actually spectating at this race, and somehow an SUV somehow ended up on the course. Luckily none of the riders where anywhere near but it still freaked me out having just finished.
Never thought I would get interested in cycling races but here I am, and have been since yesterday. Watching. Fascinated. In awe.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it
I just used Jeff's advice for attacking before the last corner on the lap and got 2nd in the 2021 cat 4 VA state championships on this course. Jeff, thanks for encouraging us to start racing and helping make us all better racers.
This is quality. Love the lower level cat-analysis!
Best two channels currently on YT! Loved it
These guys being cat 4 most have been feeling so good to see such high level commentary on them. Phil legit commentates the Capetown cycle tour (and TDF) pretty much annually, and even though I'm quite an ameture I had good day there, for myself, back in March so it was a big ego stroke when I go back to the replay and hear him speaking about my ride/attempt to pronounce my name. Even if I couldn't handle some minorly tactical descents and only got 12th.
As a Cat 4 watching this. Thx so much for the joint commentary! Awesome!!! 😎🤙🏽
Super video! Not the kind of race you see in my part of the world (Austria), but some super information! Thumbs up to the collaboration.
I love seeing guys I follow, promoting another dude who I follow.Cycling community is out of this stratosphere!🤩👍🏼
Awesome! Love the collaboration n insight.
Love this! Great way to learn crit tactics from experienced racers. Very typical of Cat 4 races, the pace slows on the bell lap, as if the riders are priming their legs for the final 200m. Learned a lot. Thanks for the analysis!
Love content with you two!!!!
MORE OF THESE PLEASE!
My two favorite cycling KZheadr's in ONE Video??
Must be Christmas already
That Chesapeake course is such a great crit course. Soo fast.
Best cycling video on KZhead. Cheers, mates.
Very informative! I love your videos!
I totally agree, that scenario that unfolded with 1 lap to go was a perfect time to attack on the first corner after the start/finish line. I've found that you only have to really hold the field off for half a lap, the field starts looking at each other between 3rd and 4th (final) corner.
This is fantastic. Fingers crossed for some more Cat 3/4/5 content 👍
Exceptional content! Thanks so much👌
Love your channel. One of the best!!!!
Thanks!
Oh my, worlds collide! Magnificent!
got myself sorted for racing in the U.k. next year, starting Cat 4 and i can’t wait
I can’t wait to send in my GoPro footage next spring/summer
This is great. I recently discovered Norcal and I’m already a fan of LR.
Nice love this colab👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Good video and I like this collab
Best two KZheadrs!
Great breakdown.
After sooooooooooooooooooooooo long time u uploaded a new video !
I know I got busy with work and a move. More space now!
man, i love your p/1/2 race analysis but this was awesomely relevant for someone like myself about to start the crit season as a Cat 4 here in AZ. I've raced quite a few crits at this point and know that tactics are going to be what gets me and/or my other 2 teammates on the podium. PS I'll be racing with a front and rear camera, so if you're interested in some more Cat 4 crit footage, I'll be happy to send! I just hope I have thick enough skin for the critiques...
I'll be kind
19,806 votes to go! TrainerRoad just had an ask the coach segment taking about how quickly ATP can regenerate in the cell. Gives a lot of merit to your assertion that a quick 1 seconds break pedaling between 2 mini sprints can be crucial
Ah, very interesting. I always wondered why it helps me sooo much not pedaling at all for just a couple of seconds while going hard on ondulating terrain. Can you post a link so I can watch/listen/read, please? edit: found it :-)
@@chrisko6439 I think it was in this one: kzhead.info/sun/is2gmtejopScdXk/bejne.html
@@thomasvmanning Thank you, but I already found it, it is episode 236, at least they are discussing this topic (ATP).
@@chrisko6439 you're right. Sorry to lead you astray
What a great tandem! ;)
We need more Lanterne Rouge!
Seems like crits are hugely popular over there! Raced in U-23/Elite in Spain and we had like 3 per season, and the rest were 150ish km races on country roads. Crits were more often used at younger ages to help kids learn the ropes over here.
Great breakdown of the race, that guy with the camera definitely could of won that, I was different when I raced was a sprinter from short track speed skating so I do the quick jump with less then a mile to go and just dig the whole way, it was a win to blow up move ha.. I'm trying to get my miles in again
10:57 you guys are actually speeding. So pro
Damnnnn THAT WAS SO GOOD
Collaboration of the year.
I closed the video when they say the guy has a 240W FTP. Just kidding, awesome collab from the 2 single best cycling creators on KZhead! And maybe one day Cosmo Catalano will join too...
blackkhawkk 240W ftp? I have 255W and I finished 3/26 races last year in the U16 category
Definitely had fun making this content with LR, won't be our last
@@HeathyRoidz wym with 3/26
Its Simon 3 out of 26
@@HeathyRoidz why so few?
Lantern Rouge is hugely informative and entertaining if you want to get an appreciation and more knowledge about racing within the professional circuit.
nice vid, kings
I want there to be local races again! Just started in July but I really want to start racing in person. I'm 210lbs and only have about a 2.5 w/kg FTP on my trainer, but I hope I could have some fun in Cat 5 races while I continue to go up.
Hey finally... some legit analysis thanks to Lanterne Rouge!
More collaboration with LR!!!
It's going to happen
And they said avengers endgame was the biggest crossover of the year
Nom, nom. To quote a fellow viewer: Omg yes!
20k likes, let's go!
Omg yes!
i like the garbage truck that flies by mid way through the video
Did anyone notice the watt on the garmin was different from the screen?
hey jeff, it would be very informative i think to show average data (i.e. average power, speed, cadence, HR) at the end of the video. maybe it is possible? i love the videos i just thought of this while watching.
You guys need to break down the national championship race
how does he know how much distance left (like in the end 200 m )?
Apparently my Strava estimated sprint power is about 180. I'm going about 45 kph with a stock specialized allez sprint comp disc bike in a 0% flat. Is that too low of an estimate?
Don't let this be a one-off deal! Make this a regular thing!
Who are these 19k people who watched the video but didn't like? Now we are never going to see Mr. Rouge racing his bike in California :(
13:29 guy wasn't acting, CAT4, the guy was toast at 29mph at that point. Look back camera he is dying to hold the pace since nobody will pull around him. Giving people more credit than they deserve.
How does someone level up in crit racing?
The car is on the course so the judges can identify the leader of the race.
Cars do help!!!... especially the pace car for the official
And it’s a lower cat... speed isn’t that high
"He nearly freewheeled into the back of him" lol
How is he wearing the go pro?
I feel like if LJ got on the wheel of the guy in orange, he would have probably won.Or a podium for sure.
Hey Jeff, got a question for you. In this video there are a couple times where riders roll off the front while their teammates are at/towards the front (@8:50 and @13:08) and you seem to think it's a good tactic. However, in an earlier video (kzhead.info/sun/nrd8oK2GnaSsao0/bejne.html) something similar happened and it wasn't described as being a good move. Why is that? Also, love the content. Keep up the good work!
If your teammates are chasing you it's a bad idea, if your teammates are setting a false tempo "blocking" it's a good idea
doing 240w and still have above 40k/h ? He seems to have a good cda, I am jealous.
Kevin Kuhn I do my best to get as aero as possible.
There's quite a bit of wattage discrepancy between the rider's data & what's uploaded in the vid. 19:18 This guy's Garmin reads 710 & this vid shows 235
If you get VC in here the cycling algorithms might explode
Doug Hall nahhh,dude🤣
Can you give information about the rider’s weight when you tell us his FTP, please?
Damn i would really like to have entry level races in austria. Here you kinda start at p1/2. You don't make the podium if you are under 5,5 - 6 w/kg on TT's. Almost no crits here too 😒 i would like to come to the US and blow up some cat 5 races with my 350 watt FTP 😅
Heroes
I know this is a year old, but the pace car is a USAC east coast thing, I’ve not had a race with out one.
New to crit racing here... Question about the first solo breakaway... From a strategic standpoint... Why do this? What is the benefit to running out ahead of the field solo, especially with 27 km to go, when it seems virtually impossible to beat the chase group for such a huge portion of the race? If you can't hold the lead until the end, why run out on your own and give up any opportunity for drafting? Did that rider think he was going to hold the lead till the finish by himself? Thanks in advance.
It's not virtually impossible. If your chances at a breakaway are higher than your chances in a field Sprint, you're better off trying a breakaway. Also, team dynamics
@@NorCalCycling understood. It just seems like if you're relying on a breakaway to win, you'd be better off doing so later on after having let the group pull you for most of the race. Then with perhaps 10km to go, you use your relatively fresh legs to mount an attack that you can sustain. 27km solo breakaway seems unrealistic given the chase group can work together and share the wind. Does this happen frequently in the sport and I'm making myself look foolish?
I will send you soon some videos.
Thanks! google drive to norcalcyclingvideos@gmail.com is best
I have the bell rung and youtube still isn't pushing these videos to the top.
Weird. Are you subscribed?
No news for us? I was watching a TrainerRoad video yesterday, and they mentioned that you were going to be racing with Mike's Bikes next year. Did they leak the news too soon or something? I think it will be a good move for you though, I think they might be a stronger team than Terun?
Mikes Bikes announced it last week on insta.
Ya Mike's is official for 2020. Probably the best all-round domestic elite team in the country. I'll post about it on insta at some point
@@NorCalCycling and the purple kit is nice, importantly

Yes perfect time to unleash a 4000M TT
Lanterne is going through puberty for a second time.
Hi! how do they measure the watt output in these races?
With a powermeter, usually attached to the crank
Hey I'm from Hampton Roads
That HR spike could be because of inadequate warm up.
At 18:51 on the power meter it says 710 watts but the thing on the side of the video says 235 watts, so which one is correct?
NVM he just started to accelerate as the power meter is calculating his power
You had me at 240 watt ftp!
Crit racing isn't so much about FTP...
@@chrisko6439 Absolutely agree, it's more about being able to recover from the surges and being able to put out high power when fatigued. And tactics. I just never thought I'd see a video where someone has the same ftp as me!
@@jetBlue_83 240w FTP nation!
Im guessing he didn't attack since his heart rate was still at 180 bpm with 2km to go till the end, he was on the rivet. his max hr was 188 bpm at the end. No matter how slow your going if he is close to his max hr. theres not much he can do but survive and and hope for a good finish. If he would have attacked with 1 km to go im sure he would have bonked and finished alot worse. Thats just my 2 cents..
hey dad!!!
Anyone else thinking where are the spectators?
the cycleology of it, lol
Hello iam kind of a armateur, is 240w ftp good ?
Wischi depends on your weight, Wischi. Also if you have a 240 ftp at 70kg but a massive 30 second power and sprint then that is way better for winning races than someone with a higher FTP and no kick
What LR said. Here's a chart (in watts/kg) to help you figure out what different categories mean: s3.amazonaws.com/cyclinganalytics/static/cycling-power-table.png
LR. Does flick his elbow at 7:04
what i most like in this videos? Americans talking metric. That is music to my ears. Ah and lanterne rouge tag team :)
Why do these riders make such a huge effort alone so early? I thought norcal said it was all about energy management and conservation in a earlier vid of his?
Unless you have a huge TT motor it's probably a bad idea if you don't have teammates. Teamwork changes everything, and forcing competition to chase is always a good thing.
I agree, I don't have teammates nor will i ever cause Im just a cat 5 going to 4 and have a life as consumed by being a care giver, with a lot of health issues, etc. But I did see in your other earlier vid complimenting a guy in one of your races that you said did it alone, and didn't have any teammates. He was a wise wheel surfer. I guess I'll have to be like that. What's your take on tail-gunning the first part of the race, then surfing up to the front in the later half?
