'I was deepfaked by my best friend' | BBC News

“Jodie” is a victim of being deepfaked.
In the spring of 2021, Jodie - not her real name - was sent a link to a porn website from an anonymous email account.
Clicking through, she found explicit images and a video of what appeared to be her having sex with various men. Jodie's face had been digitally added onto another woman's body - known as a "deepfake".
Through her own investigation work, she discovered the person behind it was one of her best friends.
Here she tells her story for the very first time.
If you’ve been a victim of harassment, stalking or revenge porn, details of organisations offering information and support are available at bbc.co.uk/actionline.

    • It's not a social media issue, but rather the effect of novel technology. We just have to transition as a society into a world where we collectively dismiss photographic evidence. If we do not trust any such images and dismiss them as almost guaranteed fakes, the issue of being exposed like this is diminished. It's still unpleasant, but no longer a blackmail/psychological warfare tool.

    • @@trl2151 Imprisonment durations depends on the country and it can vary wildly what definitions each country can have for the same kind of crime. But on a macro scale, countries tend to be split into one of two variations: The famous one being the US model, where imprisonment durations can be really long, and the consequence is that it led to gross overpopulation in prisons. While the other model, which is more common in social democracies, is shorter imprisonment durations on average, but a lot more focus on rehabilitation. The thing about the second model, is that it has a higher success rate for normal reintegration with society for non-violent offenses, and helps prevent overpopulation in prisons. But it also has a higher failure rate in rehabilitating violent criminals as well as failing to rehabilitate those belonging to organized crime like for example young people at the bottom of the totem pole that does the peddling of "certain things". Although there are countries in the world where there are punishments worse than your worst nightmare that happens not only to violent and non-violent criminals alike, but also to political prisoners. But that kind of topic tends to get censored, so there's not much that can be said about that. Because "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" is the mantra of first world countries.

    • This is so simple thing internet these days. People have no idea what you can do with AI. Those deepfakes are actually done with hard work. You gotta give up for those people .These days you dont need even do the hard work due to AI. Forget the pictures, just having sample of your audio is enough to make wild things. Just like people using Joe Rogan for their product adds etc. And the guy that get caught wouldn't get caught if he did it with open network. And most never will. Solution: Islam. I'mnot joking. Cover your faces and everything. Because you are not getting ahead of this. No one can. I remember Sherlock episode when the guy tells Sherlock "I don't have to prove it, I just have to print it". Same logic here. No one needs to prove you are actually having sex etc. in those acts. They just have to print it.

We still live in a society at the end of the day. Including online. So it's best to hold such folks accountable cuz it has real life consequences. Just like human trade that takes place online and other forms of crime has consequences. Why should these sexual predators get away when other types of crime dont go unpunished either? Sorts and outs these psychos out of society as well. I would love to know why we should blame it on the victim instead of holding that waste of O2 that did this to her accountable?

Discord did little to nothing about it, and only because I started to go down the rabbit hole, I managed to get the guy's FB profile, and to warn the mother of one of the children about it, and exposed the situation to the FBI aswell. While YT got their own automated tool to moderate certain things across the entire platform, which includes those 'shadow bans', it's not as extreme as people think. A lot of the moderation is done by the channels themselves. A YT channel can use filters to block keywords which they can make their own lists for, and there's also the ability to use advanced filters to hold comments for review by the channel before either being shown or removed depending on the channel's decision, and there are channels with several moderators as well that can review and either pass to show or remove comments that have been held for review. A channel can also block a user from posting comments entirely on all the channel's videos. It's a system that overall ends up favoring mindless engagement over meaningful engagement, across the platform on average.

  • In a couple of years you can just ask your AI software or whatever peripheral that your using (apple/Google/VR) to insert any face/foto or from a video file into your video of choice. This new form of porn and obsession is only the beginning to virtual fantasies for men and women in the porn industry.

    • Yes, something toxic about the combination of insecurity from being overweight, plus the entitlement from being so good at something - it seemed really unsurprising to me it was Alex, I’ve met men like that and I wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them.

  • I'm going through this right now. What they are doing now is one girl can be 50 different porn stars and have 100 only 😢 one girl. I found out it was my daughter 😢and she was under age they put another older girls face on her, and it's still up today. I am going to work on a case against them soon it took me a year to figure it out. So you can take advantage of this as well and she's all tictok to they can make her black our Hispanic, and anything she wants, including over wait, our skinny but she didn't change her voice so I picked up on it fast 90 percent of porn is deep fake trust me. Well, we will see what happens. Wish me luck.😢

  • It’s a rarity that between male and female friendships that one or the other doesn’t develop a crush or obsession. I’m old school, so I don’t think it’s appropriate to be friends with someone of the opposite sex while in a relationship. By that I mean, frequent communication, hanging out and so on. My wife always used our friendship to throw suspicion off of our sexual relationship from her fiancé

    • Just because you’re insecure and lacking trust doesn’t mean we are all like that. Half my best friends are girls and the other half are guys, known them for 20+ years, nothing more than a hello and goodbye hug has happened between any of us.

  • I'm not being funny, but from when she said that her best friend was 'Alex' I suspected that Alex was male from the get go! But back to my point there's no way a female can have male best friend and a boyfriend...one out of the 2 are going to get extremely jealous and I mean quick! C'mon Ladies as much as we would like to think we can keep a man as a best friend, while in a serious relationship, it's just not going to happen!! Especially at that age! Alex clearly had feelings for her and was definitely hurting because she was with a next man & didn't choose him!...what he should have done was, dealt with his feelings moved on and found his own 'woman' rather than spending his time sabotaging her image because he couldn't have her! Either way she didn't deserve this at all!
