  • You know what, I’ve always loved Disney more than anything. It is my whole childhood but after I found this out I will never think of them the same way. I am a Muslim and am proud to be one. In 2018 Chinese authorities held Muslims captive in camps. This movie was filmed where those camps where. I can’t say more than this for many reasons but pls search about this topic bcoz it needs to be heard.

    @amirahchowdhury9033@amirahchowdhury90333 жыл бұрын
    • I’ve heard. I’m sure I don’t know the worst of it, but what I have heard and seen is terrifying. I’ve refused to see this movie for that reason. I might watch it if someone else has ordered it already, so I can’t give Disney anymore money, and can judge the film on its own merits. But until that opportunity arrives, I refuse to support Disney here. I’m a gay agnostic, so I have my gripes with religion. But I would by no means use it to judge large groups of people, let alone commit such heinous human rights violations. If I may ask, how have you decided to proceed? I will not judge you for your choice, as you probably have a more personal understanding of this than I would. But I am curious.

A sense of optimism to overcome a hopeless situation? A strong love to protect her family and country? I considered watching the movie second-hand (cuz I don’t want help Disney profit from genocide). I was curious to see how it compared to the 2009 version (made by China), but if it’s that bad, then there’s probably no comparison. The Mulan in the 2009 version was a deeply troubled person who struggled to find her way in a hostile and depressing environment, but she worked her way up to becoming a charismatic leader who gained the respect of her male peers.

    • Well the reeducation camp is for those who have been deeply influenced by Islamic extremism and they need to learn new skills so that their future is bright and their families will have better standard of living. There are 25,000 mosques in Xinjiang and freedom of religion is practiced in China. That's why all the Muslim countries understand this and actually praise China for giving their Muslim brothers a bright future.

    • Just to balance the facts, the Chinese government sterilises their own (Han majority) people too. Before 2015, minorities were excluded from the one child policy, and are now subjected to a three child policy and the Han Chinese to two. Also the figure for "one million" Uyghurs is extrapolated from an interview of 8 Uyghurs by a born again christian (Adrian Zenz) who believes that tolerance of homosexuality, race, and religion will be the reason that Christians will not be raptured (saved by the second coming of Christ which you can find in his co-authored book "Worthy to Escape"). I am by no means denying the existence of these camps, nor the torture and brainwashing that is going on, but I think it is important to be aware of and be critical of your sources of "facts" and context, and not be swept away by American-influenced cold war propaganda. I mean, this camp has been reported since late 2018, but is only now being thrusted into the spotlight when the results to the 7 year legal case against the US National Security Agency was just concluded? Snowden and ACLU proved that the US government was illegally conducting mass surveillance and breaching it's own laws and in it's lead up, American corps (who are known to sell your data and manipulate even elections) are promoting stories about Chinese atrocities? Talk about a distraction from corruption.

    • She's very reserved. All China is watching. She can't say a word out of place. I'd be surprised if even her own mother would see her daughter 'being herself'. It's not a very Chinese thing in China these days. Too transparent. That's how you get stuff written up against you by the public security bureau. Most Chinese know better than to give those paranoid big brothers ammunition or reason to suspect them for disloyalty more than average. And the more famous you are, the more vulnerable you are to being taken down. I think Li Bingbing disappeared from the public for like 96 days for tax evasion or something. Some people were worried that's the last we would see of her. She's back. But China is a pretty scary country. You don't want to mess with the Chinese Government. And if they see you as a national asset, as they are likely to view Liu Yifei, they wouldn't want her to say too much, because even to utter a single personal opinion might be considered 'treason' in betraying 'national secrets'. And then you have President Donald J Trump. No secret on earth. You get a very direct stream of consciousness from him. Completely unfiltered. So two extremes. Probably both unhealthy in some ways, but what can you do?

    • @@LaurenKills1918 If nothing else, I'm very thankful for the Mulan 2020 film for being an eye opener for how Chinese politics truly works to the Western world. Because it attempted to simultaneously appeal to both the Chinese and Western markets, a very cutting edge and bold attempt, and unsurprisingly, due to its attempt to compromise between the two, ended up disappointing both, like how King James, coming from Scotland to England and assuming the throne there, getting the hopes up of both the bishops and the protestants, ended up disappointing both, because he was an adult, and made up his own mind, and wasn't just a child king pawn for the adults' political games. But instead, he got them to work together to write the King James Version of the Bible, his legacy of the ages, which put together two very conflicting opinions and created dialogue, resulting in one of the most robust translations of the Bible to date. In a similar vein, Mulan 2020 gives something both average Chinese and average Americans something in common to complain about, which ironically brings the two worlds closer together. Even if what they complain about are very different: Chinese basically complaining about: 1) How it's not Chinese enough and not non Chinese enough, so occupies that very awkward space that, for example, human like AI occupy, which gives you the creeps, because you know they aren't human, but you can't exactly treat them like any other machine, so you literally don't know what to do with it 2) It's not action packed enough or dramatic enough (in far less creative words, like 'it's boring' or 'it's a waste of time') Whereas Americans complaining about: 1) It's not instantly gratifying like Mulan 1998 (in very different words that are far more flattering to the speaker and far more critical of the producer) 2) its conflict with the viewer's conscience But! If you knew who the director of the film was, who Liu Yifei was, what WETA is, how the Chinese WuXia films tend to go, and certain other details like these, you can pretty much deconstruct the film, and see what an interesting product of all its constituent parts it is. The Director made "The Whale 🐳 Rider" and "Moana" before this film. Both films are slow paced, soul searching, introspective, artsy pieces, and if you look at the psychological aspects of the film instead of the action or the wider scene, you can definitely see that the film revolves around Milan's growth in consciousness around her role in the wider world and the reason for her existence, just like in "The 🐋 Rider" and "Moana", with up times and down times to the point of despair and alienation, before you reach a hidden climax, acceptance and reintegration in a far more genuine, mature and authentic way. And then you have Liu Yifei's influence, of a steady, determined, growth focussed actress who cares more to mature as an actress in a well rounded way than to maintain her hard won reputation or fan base. In this, she's got my respect. And then, you can see the excruciating detail to which WETA put into the set, costumes, make up, just as they did in the Lord of the Rings, so that you become unaware that there really even are special effects. And finally, you have the Chinese WuXia film theme of an overpowered protagonist coming to the edge of their sanity, due to their feeling of alienation and inability to fit in with everyone else, reaching breaking point, but then, getting it all together just in time to play a vital role in the final battle and take out the final boss. I think the Western Audience, who are used to the gunfight showdown, expect the boss fight to be the climax, and are likely to be disappointed. Generally, in a WuXia film, the main villain is only there as a phantom menace, as a paper Tiger, as an outward adversary to ramp up the pressure and force the protagonist into maturing quickly, overcoming their internal blockages, facing their inner demons, their most deep rooted fears and insecurities, which is actually the real "boss fight", and as soon as that battle is won, the rest tends to be pretty trivial by comparison. The main suspense tends to revolve around: will this person turn right, or will they mess up and either join the dark side, get themselves killed in a silly manner, or let themselves get talked into committing suicide? It's a very subtle movie. I don't expect the majority of the people to get it. I think Hollywood is trying to shift from Major Blockbusters into Art-House, independent films, but they seem to have left most of their fan base behind by moving too quickly and not setting the expectations right. If they pitched it as somehow an experimental, art house reinterpretation of Mulan, almost completely independent of the 1998 animated original, more people would have wanted to watch it for what it actually was. Anyway, plenty of lessons to be learnt all around. I'm sure they'll get there in the end, even if it takes ages.

EDIT 1: you guuuuys. that escalated quickly. so.someone in the comments said that liu could not actually support hong kong if she wanted to keep her career( shoutout to K4U) . i thought a lot about that before posting this comment- i live in a country where people are killed and/or threatened for something as trivial as eating or touching beef. My problem is not that liu supports the hk police( because we can never actually know if she truly supports them or if she's faking it), it is that disney thought it'd be okay to cast her and that buzzfeed thought that it would be okay to endorse her when they are literally the epitomy of toxic liberalism,and could have cast any other person of Chinese descent for the role.i am sorry. I should have specified that in my original comment. I will try not to do it again! 👍 EDIT 2: and Xinjiang. Now, they could have shot those scenes in a lot of other places over the continent,BUT they chose to shoot it in that specific place,and even chose to thank the officials in the end credits for the movie. I've also seen posts saying that Uyghur is a huge province and it's okay to shoot there,but according to the Chinese government's info(which may or may not be correct)over half the population consists of Uyghur muslims.Again, Disney claims to be liberal and open-minded .so that's another thing.thank you for making it to this part of the post,and for your opinions.

We sometimes have to remember Disney's fairytales are borrowed from other countries' history and legends. I see many of you hating on the movie for many reasons. I agree, Disney really messed up. • Hmm I'd argue that their romance is merely less explicit. I would have loved to see them add even more romance scenes. *SPOILERS AHEAD* * * * * * Their hand hold scene was ADORABLE, pure, and romantic. It conveyed so many emotions, shyness, trust, hesitance, acceptance etc. Imo that scene alone is better than all kiss scenes I've watched in any media.
