I agree with you 100%. My boat partner quit in our team event, due to me not being able to upgrade my boat's electronics. I'm still running a pair of Humminbird 997 units. And I've won 8 tournaments and 1 Trail Classic, fishing against guys with live scope. And not even on one of my "local" waters either... Keep up the good work Todd

Good luck! It really works well for me and I just love how it telegraphs everything from the bottom.
I make my own open-pour worms that I have specifically for a shaky head that float nicely and have great tail wiggle. I haven't ever tried dragging a shaky head before, but I know of places in my lake where the bottom composition changes and I can see that technique doing great.
I kind of stumbled upon trying it after dragging lots of jigs and it has just really worked well for me in many tough situations. The main reason I gave it a go was our bottom composition has lots of gunk down there and I wanted something to stick up and out of it a little. In lots of areas, the Ned rig just gets lost - especially as the water warms up. I think it is awesome that you pour those. I have always wanted to dabble around with it but never have.
@@SteveRogersOutdoors The big lake is full of hydrilla from bottom to top, but the little lake is a lot more of that grassy muck. I bet dragging a shaky head would do great there! And once you start making your own baits, it's a deep deep rabbit hole, lol. On the plus side, I have more worms, craws, and jigs than I know what to do with. On the other hand, I get more than a few stares from the wife about how much clutter my lure making has caused, lol!

@@SteveRogersOutdoors Hey Steve, not to bombard your session with Lowbrow but, try the Big TRD if the stuff grows too high. It's at least a 4" bait, a little taller than that 2.75" Finesse TRD. You'll just have to jump up to the Power Finesse Shroomz with a 2/0 hook. I throw the 1/6 ounce head with the Big TRD. Tight lines to both of you.

I just fished a lake that most folks have said is really hard to fish. I went two days in a row with nothing. I’ve asked (folks fishing the area) about what I might be doing. This morning I told a friend that I don’t think it’s a good spot. I told the wife the lake might be just a stop. But makes me wonder still because it comes off of a larger lake and into the river that leads to the CA Delta. Watching this sort of gives me hope to try this lake one more time. Thanks for a great channel and details for a “born-again angler like me”.
Good luck! There are definitely some lakes that are very tough or not that good, but it sounds like it may be in a good location being connected to the Delta. Let me know how it goes.
Been catching bass since I was 5 now in my 40's used a shaky head with a pumpkin seed creature bait caught my first bass on it. This will be my new exploratory bait when fishing new waters. Shaky head is a fun bait to fish.
It is! I rely on it a lot. So much confidence in it.

This kind of aligns with your Ned dragging video. Is a shakey head nothing more than a longer Ned? Good video, Steve. I’m going retro on this as my son bought me a few packs of the old school Crème Tube Worm which float like an elaztech.
Those will be some great worms for this! I can definitely agree the shaky is like a longer Ned. I will often choose the shaky if there is a little more junk in the bottom and need that length to stand out a little more.

hey steve most shakey heads i see use screw locks but i can never get the elastec bats to screw on is there another jig head you suggest? thanks for all the info great vid.
That is an excellent question. I agree with your comment about the screw locks. There are two that I use - both the Strike King Shaky head and the Bagley Baits shaky head. The Bagley one is an interesting design because instead of the traditional plastic lure keeper (which can work great) they have a cone design that the plastic slips over easily and then the wide end of the cone holds the plastic in place.
Good stuff Steve! I'm a Big TRD guy if I'm going to work or drag the bottom but, I'd like to do more shaky head than I have. I really haven't invested much time with the shaky head due to the TRD. Anyway, a question about the shaky head worm. Should I always go with let's say a 6" worm? Is that part of the draw of the shaky head? With most other things, biting a piece off of the worm for maybe colder water or very slow days seems to be the norm but, should I always keep the shaky head worm length longer to impart the action needed with that setup? How short is too short of a worm length on a shaky head? Okay, that's 2 questions. Thanks!
I really like a 6-7” worm, even in colder water. That tail standing up gives me a lot of confidence. Great questions!

Hey Steve I was watching a similar video with Randy blauket and he was saying to use a 1/16 oz head because it looks more natural when it's falling but Steve what about when you are fishing deep I think 1/16 oz is going to be to light for deep water. You know Steve sometimes I think these pro fisherman are giving us there preference because look at what size you were using. I mean Steve I know I'm older than you but Steve you have more time on the water than I do and I see you where useing a 1/4 oz head. Tell me your thoughts. man I'll tell you Steve you are my favorite u tube channel because Steve you really talk about the key things that we really need to know. Don't get me wrong Steve I don't want to insult the other guys I watch but you're channel I've taken a huge interest in thanks for trying to help me and make me a better angler.
Another issue with a 1/16 ounce head is if there is the slightest wind out on the water, you'll have a harder time casting, keeping a bow out of your line and feeling the bite because of that bow. 1/16 ounce may work in dead calm but, I don't experience many of those days out fishing! Plus, I have to figure 1/4 ounce has a much better chance of having the bait stand up. JMHO

I will downsize to a 1/16 if fishing a little shallower and there is not much wind or current, but most of the time I use the 1/4 because I feel I have better bottom contact and feel. Plus, a lot of it is that is the size I have a ton of confidence in. Great question!
