Work started on this project before I even knew what I wanted to build... or how to build it. But here it is, the journey so far and what I might have done differently.

  • I can’t believe this was 5 years ago

  • I kept pausing the video thinking I could here my kids waking up in bed upstairs.... Took about three times before I realised it was Tim's in the background! 😂

  • Wish I had soil like that in my garden . We just have new build clay where the developer sells off the top soil

  • Having recently watched The Wood Whisperer get his workshop floor epoxied, from what I can gather you don’t want a completely smooth concrete floor. The epoxy needs a rough surface to grab onto. Worth watching his videos if you haven’t already 😀. As always though an excellent job then, and now 👏🏼👏🏼

    • Yeah the surface will be etched before the primer. The screed is more to get rid of the dips and low spots. 👍

  • Looks great. When I watch your stuff I'm impressed by how quickly your projects move on. I'm building a treehouse and a whole day can go by where I seem to have done hardly anything.

  • I would 100% recommend 'ARDITEX NA' by ARDEX for the self levelling. It dries smooth and is unaffected by any moisture. I have used it in lots of damp places over the years and it's never failed me. keep up the good work Tim.

  • Tip: before you screed, treat the concrete floor with a PVA/water mix and let it thoroughly dry...a couple of days...then when you knock up the screed, add PVA to the mix...it will bind better and be stronger... 👍🏻

  • Spectacular and brave to try! Do you think the low left side is from the forms? Or from the base settling? Or from ...? Thanks for the video!

    @robertbamford8266@robertbamford82663 жыл бұрын
    • The forms, just not levelled correctly. I’ll blame the budget old 6ft level which is all I had back then!

  • Have you built a drain into the shed or a gradient as you keep mentioning hosing it out?

    @ridgmont61@ridgmont613 жыл бұрын
    • I don’t plan to need to hose it out however there is a channel drain outside the double doors if needed. I guess more mopping or squeegeeing is what I meant. 😂

  • Hi. I think I've cocked up... I put the DPM between the compacted soil and the Type 1 MOT... the mesh is on the mot on mesh men, and the concrete is going on to it all. I noticed you put your DPM between your type 1 and your pad. Will I be okay?

  • did you fix the frame to the blocks/ concrete Tim? Secondly, I am intending to do do something similar except that I may not cross batten and cedar clad. Is there any reason why you can't fix the cedar cladding directly to the panels (without battens)? Using battens adds more weight to what is hanging on the panels and I don't understand their function ?

    @TWOKDOK1@TWOKDOK13 жыл бұрын
    • No batten no airflow which would not be good for the cladding. Frame still not bolted down but will be when I get round to it. To be honest no real need as it can’t really budge but a bunch of sleeve anchors will do the job just fine.

  • So, where there's a 5mm discrepancy on the floor height, how easy/difficult is it to get a level concrete floor? Do you think your shuttering was too low at that end, or was it something to do with how the concrete was poured? Thinking of doing a concrete slab myself (large garden room), but wondering how difficult levelling it will be.

    @patrickloftus@patrickloftus3 жыл бұрын
    • Poor job of levelling the shuttering, (days before having a laser), tamped out with an old floor joist that probably wasn’t straight. If done right there is no reason that you can’t end up with a level and perfectly smooth floor. The shed base I did last summer was way better and trowelled to a ‘polish’.

  • Did you need training/quals before controlling the digger?

    @kamranhussain09@kamranhussain093 жыл бұрын
    • In the UK you can just rent them from a company, sign a form and use it.

      @18199@181993 жыл бұрын
  • Always the perfectionist Tim, I'd be cock-a-hoop with that slab for a DIY job. Whoever did my extension (about same length and half the width of your workshop) crowned the centre by at least 50mm the whole length 😂 I'm not quite sure what the best option is to sort it out.

    @gingerelvis@gingerelvis3 жыл бұрын
    • If you can tolerate the height increase you could screed a layer on top?

      @TheFool2cool@TheFool2cool3 жыл бұрын
    • @@TheFool2cool that's what I've been thinking. It's a kitchen and bathroom extension which is already a 200mm step down from the main house. It all needs gutting anyway.

  • I dont think your just a humble diyer are you. Out of 100 typical diyers how many would you say could drive a micro digger like that ? You need to be a bit clearer on your background

    @covcarpenter9158@covcarpenter91583 жыл бұрын
    • You can pick up how to operate that micro digger in no time if you are practical, which Tim is... you don’t need to be John Cyril Bamford to curl up a few scoops like that 😂

      @gerrym4377@gerrym43773 жыл бұрын
    • @@gerrym4377 nonsense gerry pure nonsense my man. Just being practical doesnt account for A the driving of the digger and B the laying of a concrete pad that large. I have no issue with people putting stuff like that on youtube but be honest about you experience and how you know all this info to lay a concrete raft that big is a pretty serious project not really a diy type job. There some previous professional building experience going on here being past of as a laymen

      @covcarpenter9158@covcarpenter91583 жыл бұрын
    • @@covcarpenter9158 I’m not going to argue about it, but having watched Tim for years I can tell you he is just a practical, have a go kind of guy, some people are just like that, if you follow along you will see the mistakes and lessons along the journey displayed with a huge amount of humility. 😊

    • Only took an hour or so. This is the day after it was dropped off so I had already played around on the other side of the garden doing the patio base. Took a little while to get used to it but would still be laughed at by someone who really knows what they’re doing. A few time lapse highlights in a follow up video doesn’t make me any more than just a regular diyer. 👍
