As seasons change again, it's time for me to start gearing up on bait for the winter. My favorite bait for Pompano, Sheepshead, and Drum is sandfleas. I make sure to stock up and be ready for the winter season.

  • I grew up right on Ormond Beach, so whenever I needed fleas, I just raked the sand for a minute and had a pail full. Now I live in South Florida where there aren't any sand fleas. Now that you've educated me on boiing them, I'm going to run up the coast to Sebastián and load up enough for a few bags in the freezer. Maybe I'll run down to Channel 2 or 5 and see how the bridge fish like them in the keys. Like you said, worse case senerio I can mix them with sand, oats and fish oil for chum balls on the slack tide. Heck I might even try a frozen block or two of fleas and ground up fish bits for bridge chum. Thanks for the inspiration Joey!!

  • I wonder if we keep stocking up on fleas, that soon there won't be many fleas at all. Seeing more and guys with massive rakes on the beaches. When the fleas are gone, so will be the pompano guys. The artificial baits work really well. I collect and freeze some also. But not as many as years ago. a GREAT way to take your fleas to the beach is frozen in a wide mouth thermos. You can keep it chilled in your cooler at the beach. Use what you need and return to fridge when you get home. They will be just as good on your next trip ( blanched fleas)..this cuts down on waste. Guy's take big bags of frozen fleas to the beach and throw out half a bag when then leave. We have conserve. and its easy to do.

    @brianlawler9084@brianlawler90843 жыл бұрын
    • That's like getting annoyed that they call Snapper Jack in Australia. Look up what a Mangrove Jack is and a mangrove snapper. They look almost identical but have different names in different locations. When I have to write up a trip ticket for selling sand fleas on the FWC software they are listed as mole crabs. If I'm trying to talk to someone in my area about a specific bait and refer to them as mole crabs, no one knows what I'm talking about because down here they are called sand fleas. Every single bait shop on the east coast of Florida and probably even further up refers to them as sand fleas. Unless you're referring to the scientific name of an animal there could be many different names for one species.
