  • I've said this many times before, its a miracle baseball doesn't have more fatalities. I believe the last one was a few years ago when a line drive struck a 1st base coach in the neck, rupturing his artery and killing him instantly.

    • That was Tulsa Drillers coach Mike Coolbaugh. It prompted a meeting where MLB general managers decided that all base coaches would wear helmets.

    • Agreed. Between that and just how incredibly difficult hitting is in general, it's a wonder how so many people still play baseball. I mean come on, it's a sport in which if you FAIL slightly less often than 7 times out of 10, you're a star hitter. That's crazy.

  • I think the only issue with the hand test was having up standing against the weight. Your hands would have room to get blown back from the impact, but with the weight it just takes all that pressure right in, increasing the damage

    @chaseross8900@chaseross8900 Жыл бұрын
    • I was just thinking the same thing.. I think that's the only reason the thumb literally got ripped off. I would imagine that all of the other fractures would occur regardless though. Whether or not your hand has sufficient space to get blown backwards and absorb some of that energy from the moving ball, that's still a significant amount of energy that is going to transfer to and dissipate through the flesh and bones of your entire hand as soon as the ball makes contact with it. At 100 mph that's a shitload of energy.

  • At a summer training camp in highschool (I was 15-16 I think?) I wore ~80 to the jaw. Luckily I was in the process of turning away from it, and no serious immediate injuries happened but I had all sorts of dental shift which required a ton of work over the course of years. Also for about 2 weeks after my neck muscles were SORE. Could barely turn my head. I simply cannot imagine the pain Giancarlo went through with a MUCH faster baseball. Terrifying.

  • The average force of a fastball while it is experiencing acceleration is 144.9J. Which is the same amount of energy as lifting a 21.4 lb weight 5 feet off the ground or lifting a 48.5 lb weight 1 foot off the ground. Instead of doing my English paper that's due at midnight, I'm going to calculate how much energy a fastball has. I was going to calculate how much kinetic energy there is once the ball reaches the pitcher but then I remembered I'm bad at physics. If any of you know how to do physics, the very last paragraph is my attempt to calculate that so feel free to correct me. For my measurements I'm going to use 100 mph (44.704 m/s) for velocity (v), 60 feet 6 inches (18.4404 m) for distance (d), for weight I used 5.1 oz (0.145 kg) for mass (m) I'm also ignoring air friction. The distance is the distance between the pitchers mound and the batter, and the weight is the average weight of a MLB baseball. Work (w), Kinetic energy (KE), Gravity ((g)=9.81m/s^2), Joules (J) W=1/2mv^2 so (0.5*0.145*44.704^2) is the work being done by the pitcher. Because of the work energy theorem we know that the initial kinetic energy of the ball is 144.9 Joules of energy which is the exact same as the work being done. For reference, a 22 lb weight moving at 11 mph has a kinetic energy of 125 Joules and a 22lr right after being shot has a kinetic energy of 162 Joules. Its also the same exact kinetic energy as lifting a 21.4 lb weight 5 feet off the ground (144.9/(1.524*9.81)). < used KE=mgh rearranged (KE/gh =m). W=Fd so I should divide 144.9J by 18.4404m to find force but that gives me 7.86 which I feel is wrong due to all of the accounts of ppl getting badly hurt by fastballs. Maybe I'm not using the right equation. F=ma to find acceleration I'm going to use a=(vf^2-vi^2)/2d. I got 54.19 m/s^2. Using F=ma, I found that the force was still 7.857. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong someone pls help. How do people break their bones from a fastball.

Dermal tissue and adipose tissue (that ballistic gel mimics) does not have the same tensile strength as muscles tendons and ligaments. While the finger did detach on the model, it would be very very unlikely for that to actually occur.
