  • ⚠️ ⚠️ Just to clarify, Krist used almost exclusively alternate picking. With 'No downpicking' I mean he does not use a 'only downpicking' policy that most bassist in this type of band use . • Krist is one of the reasons I picked up a bass guitar. I love his bass parts, especially the melodic lines that he played. He would play different riffs during the choruses than the guitar that really added a whole other element to the songs.

  • I’ve been playing for 25 years, thousands of hours of experience. Recently I started giving lessons to some high school students who are ridiculously into Nirvana. I’ve learned that Novoselic was an awesome bassist. The laid back but aggressive attitude in his lines is difficult to nail down. Maybe I’m just too old and don’t have that energy anymore.

  • I love Krist, he's one of my favorite bass players and in my opinion one of the most underrated, and it's his bass lines that I've learned first. With that said, I have no f****** idea how he managed to play with his bass below his waist while bouncing around! I've tried it, again and again, and I just can't do it. Maybe it's his extremely big hands? Does he even have big hands? I know he's extremely tall. But then again I know of other players, both bassists and guitar players from the '90s who did the same thing, I just can't get it !

  • Yeah, people call it a "slash" chord, but correct term is "inversion". When you play a chord, but rather than the root note on the bottom, you play one of the other notes on the bottom. If you play an open C major chord, but also fret the low E at the 3rd fret (G note), you have a C/G That is, a C major with the fifth (G) on the bottom instead of the root (C). If you play the C chord, but also the low open E you have a C/E - C major with the third (E) on the bottom.

  • Yeah it kinda bugs me he has the "basic bassist" label. His lines aren't exactly difficult to play, but I don't think "basic" is a good descriptor. He definitely has a signature style that is tasteful and adds a lot of melody to Kurt's (actually basic) riffs and vocals. He's had a massive influence on my own playing, and I often wonder what Krist would do in certain situations. Most people (myself included) had no idea what was going on under the guitars on Heart Shaped Box. Krist adds some awesome syncopation via pull-offs and other little rhythmic embellishments.

  • I mean Krist is doing bends only because the guitar is doing it too, so he changes the note as Kurt and it gives a more sloppy note change and it sounds great, but if Kurt didn't do any bend he wouldn't imo, cuz a bass doing bends where there is no bends just flips the band over and the bass maintains the band in order, so if you change of root by bending you'll lose your bandmates & it will sound quite bad to be honest.
