  • I saw a K-28 in the thumbnail so I clicked. :D Edit: Guess I'm flying to Toronto to punch you. :P The Rio Grande had 4 classes of K's - the K-27, K-28, K-36, and K-37. 491, my babe, is a K-37. That model in scrap mechanic of the K-28 is legitimately insanity. Props to the creator!

    • many thanks, and yes, you are right, building this locomotive was insane, I spent many hours looking at photos and videos of the k-28 in order to rebuild it in scrap mechanic as faithfully as possible (apart from the extra counterweights on all the wheels which for me is nicer to look at as well as being useful as a second attachment to the wheel, important for the strange physics of S.M.); among the next trains that I am planning to build there could also be a small locomotive that I saw in one of your videos, capable of climbing mountains with a simple gear that hooks onto teeth in the middle of the rails; If I ever get around to building it, there's a good chance it will end up in a KAN video

  • hello, the creator of the del Rio Grande k28 here, thanks for choosing it for the video and I'm happy that you liked it, I'm amazed that it worked in physics 7 because the walshaerts v.g.s. and built to work best in pH 4/5; regarding the control of the walshaerts system, I tried to make it as realistic as possible to how the locomotives actually work, it has 3 speeds explained in more detail in the description, in short, for the first you press 2 which is for forward, then 1 to activate the pistons, for the second you press 2 again to set the second speed, then for the third it is a bit buggy, by pressing 3 you can still get a small boost in speed but it could happen that the train stops and starts to go in reverse, to go in reverse do the same movements but reversing 2 and 3.

The one that Hyce runs at the Colorado Railroad Museum is Denver and Rio Grande Western 491, a K-37. The biggest class of 2-8-2 that the Grande produced.

  • 13:52 The clutch explains it; that's what makes it like a ratchet. The piston moves while the clutch transfers rotational motion and moves the other way while the clutch is disengaged; then, it's quite easy to control which part of the phase the clutch engages for, allowing forward and reverse. (I presume those double bearing clutches are basically always slipping while engaged because of Scrap Mechanic's Physics.)

    • However, because the Driveshaft is on one side, the Problem that the Driveshaft will change in Length depending on the Curve it's on appears. Additionally, over the Length of the Axle, some Torque will "disappear"

  • Hyce has K-37 No. 491 at the museum. K-28 No.s 473, 476, and 478 are on the Durango & Silverton. 470-472, 474-475, 477, and 479 were taken by the government to run in Alaska and Canada in WWII, and were scrapped instead of honoring the return and were not even paid for, so it screwed the D&RGW over pretty badly. They’re known as the “Sport Models”, the 28s, because they handled so well-like a sports car vs a sedan/saloon car-the K-27s had 20 total, but only 463 and 464 still exist and were called “Mud Hens” for the “waddled” down the tracks in the early years. The 28s were a massive improvement from the start rather than a conversion like the K-27s had.

  • Shay's were developed for the Logging industry which normal locomotives couldn't get up those massive hills. There was also a prototype engine that untilized regular logs as rails. It didn't go far from that but Shay's and their geared down wheels allowed the trains to pull massive loads to and from logging camps

    @themuttonqueen8692@themuttonqueen86926 ай бұрын
    • good eye, yes, there are six counterweights that shouldn't be there, there are two reasons why I put them, one aesthetic and one technical, the aesthetic one is because it was nicer to see for me, while the technical one is that each wheel is connected externally with two pistons to the counterweights, horizontally and I couldn't put a single piston in the center because the bearing was already there

  • About the pressure engines. I'm pretty sure that pressure engine was constructed just to maximize power per piston, which is why it is so big (it has 800hp/piston I think, while most regular engines have 25-30hp/piston). However, it does not need to be that big; I was able to make a regular-sized B8 (7x5x3), which has 370hp/piston (aka 2900hp total), but the flywheel is way too heavy to be good on most cars. The best I got was an unstable 140 km/h with a bunch of wasted power through the clutch (wasted power because a solid clutch would stall the engine or flip over the car 100 times).

    @ig-rd5923@ig-rd59236 ай бұрын
    • The engine by spacewalk has about 600 hp per piston, but DenseFrost made one that goes up to 800 per. Hope that kAN revisits the pressure engine. Edit: The maximum hp per piston unofficially is 1000 per piston for pressure engine.
