    • I find this argument kind of lacking. The individual chooses to remain blind to a game or if they want to start looking into it. Its very easy to avoid something you dont want to see. KH3 was a game that i didnt want to know anything about but that was a horrible choice. I wish i had read up on it before i bought it. That game was a disappointment. • I would say a counterpoint is, if you just don't have the time. If you're older and work and don't have the luxury of spending hours discovering all the secrets in a game, it's okay to spoil yourself a little. That was one way I held myself back. I wasn't enjoying games because I didn't allow myself to look up some of the secrets and easter eggs that sometimes make the whole game fun. And I get a terrible feeling of missing out. It's okay to look stuff up, play on easy mode, or get assistance if it means you enjoy the game more in the little time you have available to play it.

  • Counterpoint: There are tons of things that I would've never found in Hollow Knight if I had never searched it up. For instance, the Hive entrance is really well hidden and would take hours of searching to actually find unless you got lucky. Some people don't want to do that and actually want to make progress :)

    • Counterpoint: That doesn't rationalize looking up guides on the internet for every shortcoming you come across because that, as he says in the video, ruins the game. Also bees roam around entrances and exits of the Hive so it's a subtle hint.

      @shanerichart@shanerichart8 ай бұрын
    • @@shanerichartyeah but there's games that straight up hide stuff so stupidly that it makes no sense like for example fromsoft games, there is not a single person I've met that found out where Nameless king, Owl father or Darklurker is without looking up a guide and sometimes these things are missable so you'd just be playing the game thinking yeah I'll just keep playing till I find out then reach a certain point where it becomes unaccessible, guides for well hidden stuff like this or things like items are justifiable Imo, it doesn't ruin the game at all if you're literally missing out on the cool stuff that the game has but is locked behind a complex system

      @bourne.@bourne.8 ай бұрын
    • @@bourne. Fair point taken, but we're talking about games that encourage the player to search around and break things to find new areas. The only vague area to unlock is maybe Kingdom's edge, but I haven't met someone who missed that. When people encounter a single shortcoming they dash to Reddit and ask questions even though they obviously haven't found an item or hit a lever yet. The point made in the video is that if you sacrifice going into the game blind to overcome a problem that could be easily fixed later on spoils the game. Hollow Knight is a game that literally makes you explore so when you come across one locked door or something it shouldn't be imperative to hastily dash to a social media website and spoil your own experience for obvious answers.

    • @@quoipi You still don't really learn anything from that screencap other than "well, the game gets a little dark and scary." Which again, you probably could have gleaned from the Psychological Horror tag and the fact that the game straight up warns you that disturbing things will happen.

      @scarabdust@scarabdust Жыл бұрын
    • @@scarabdust The term “psychological horror” can mean anything that relates to disturbing themes, but the main twist of the game is that it becomes glitchy and sentient -breaks the 4th wall-( which is what this vid shows here). I think part of the magic is that the game spends 2-3 hours being an actual (non-horror) dating sim, so when stuff started to get glitchy and messed-up, it’s really meant to take you by surprise. You first think that the dark part is the ending of your 1st playthrough, and may go to for your 2nd to avoid it from happening… and then game says NOPE and decides to not hold back anymore. I played the game when it was still new and only a handful of youtubers put out their first episode/s of their playthrough , so maybe it was different experience compared to now where everyone knows to some extent that DDLC is culturally accepted as a horror game.

    • @@bananacakesmckanzee7290 We have the context of the game though, so we know what the dark glitchy stuff means when we see screenshots or screencaps. A completely new player wouldn't really take away anything from the screencap in the video--other than, again, that the game gets dark and isn't a normal dating sim. An actual spoiler would be like a screenshot of Sayori hanging herself or something, not something that has zero context.

Besides, the community has managed to fool me with some things (Grubfather) and I am hoping that I wasn’t lied to about a way to save a certain someone with a flower. I think why my playthrough experience in HK feels isolated from everyone else's is just how the map is and I have often ventured out of map bounds and lost my ways and had to refind them or die. I wouldn't look up someone explaining how to beat Hornet in Greenpath or No Eyes, but I think I will definitely look for guidance it I ever face Radiance because I am scared and I would also do so if I had no clue who Radiance was and accidentally stumbled into the fight. My fingers would immediately fly over to google after dying a couple of times without progress or not because I am getting too obsessed with beating Radiance so I would keep at it until my hands would be in literal pain after doing all the moves xD

So after na hour of playing I decided to look up some tech "It's just some tech, it makes everything more fun to zoom around!" I told myself. And while I was on the wiki I saw some minor spoilers, nothing big. Later I was stuck in Outskirts for a while can't remember why exactly, but I decided to look for a map on the wiki. And then I started reading the trivia section while scrolling down to the map section. And it continued on and on. I read more and more. I go to a new area and decide to just look up for a youtube video to watch in the background because I play on switch handheld. so since I am so happy about this game and have fun, I check the first part or two of an let's play. and eventually I get spoiled more and more about me just wanting to consume as much as quickly as possible. I had an overall great time with the game, got the dlc (spoiled a lot too) and was finished with most content after 2 weeks. I could have had more fun for months probably if I just stayed away from the wiki and from youtube, I don't know why I do this to me.

  • Here’s the thing. I completely 100% agree with you. But, the thing is, people have fun in different ways. When my dad was younger and playing the first Legend of Zelda game, he and his friends would meet up and tell each other about all the new things they’d found and all the dungeons they’d managed to solve. They actually wrote all of their findings in a journal and even had maps of the game world. My point is, whenever one of them got stuck, they would go ask the other person for help, and they went back and forth like this until, eventually, they beat the game. I think that would enhance the experience. My dad even said he felt like he would’ve had less fun with the game had someone not been there to help him through it. I’m not saying everyone has to play like this, I’m just saying that for some people, it’s more fun to ask for help.

    @NathanAndYair@NathanAndYair Жыл бұрын
    • This, but I also think that it's also about what the game is as well. Undertale? Toby Fox had trouble making a trailer because almost every instance would count as huge spoilers. Legend of Zelda? Apparently developers themselves wanted the game to be played like your dad played, a game with a pure sense of adventure with your friends, same with Pokemon. Hollow Knight meanwhile, similar to Undertale, is definitely not a game you want spoiled in majority of context, Silksong pretty much too. Rain World, on the other hand, is what I find a very interesting experience: on one end, it's better you enter in blind because it's an experience trying to survive in that enviorment; on the other end looking up some walkthroughs, asking for help and spoiling a bit about where to go and what you will find is something you can do because the game can be ruthless and you must learn on your own. I looked up control and movement walkthroughs as well as spoilt myself with the existence of characters and creatures, as well the entire playthrough of the hard difficulty, but that barely ruined the fun I had with the game because the game has so much that you are driven to replay it and replay it for the experience alone. I do not suggest spoiling yourself fully (especially the storyline), but I do encourage you if you want some help by spoiling yourself. So in few words, yeah, it's not just about the player but it's also what kind of game are you playing.

    • Not quite sure how to unpack this. Can't tell if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing. The reason I don't pick a different game is because I still enjoy these games. There really isn't one specific way to enjoy a game. And not everybody cares about solving every little puzzle on their own. It sounds like you do. And I do too, but with my life changes, like family(which is way more important than games to me), I tend to enjoy the game in any way that fits my lifestyle. Literally hours after the title drop, people were making and releasing videos about tips and tricks, lore, and everything else they could with tears of the kingdom in the title like the game itself was released and I never felt more fury for a community I was a part of

    • Stuff like that is what ruined CoD zombies for me (and the lead director leaving while Activision was doing Activision things). When I finished the WaW campaign with my cousin in 2008 and we got dropped into zombies it was a magical moment. Not knowing what to do, the slow build up of zombies (that does make it hard to go back to now). And every game kept expanding on that. Load into a new map without knowing anything and just figure it out. They were good at adding more mechanics and every map was more fun than the last while slowly building up this story. Use the environment and world building to solve the puzzles and survive. Once Black Ops 3 came around, there was a dedicated community and all of a sudden every dlc map that came out was completely solved and everything about it discovered by the end of the week, I think in one case it took 12 hours. It was fun to be a part of a large community all trying to discover things but waiting 2-3 months just to spend less than a week playing each dlc eventually wasn’t fun. I don’t want every map to just be “look up the 30 minute guide.” And I think the mentality of just watching the KZheadrs solve everything in a day (in some cases they got early access to dlc) kinda ruined my enjoyment going forward. I bought WWII and it was such a breath of fresh air to have hints in game but you didn’t need to go to KZhead. Cold War was similar, it never felt like I needed to go to KZhead and I could just figure it out slowly with my friends by putting our brains together. Keep in mind, I did enjoy black ops 3 a lot, to the point that it’s one of my favourite cod games even though I’ve been around since 2008, but my love for zombies did not continue into black ops 4. I didn’t want that same experience. I just want to play a game, occasionally look something up if I’m brain dead or the developers made a bad puzzle (Uncharted 3 light room), but mostly just experience it without the help of others.

    • @tph_dragon🐁 that's infuriating too, but my main issue is that all we've gotten is the title drop at this point. No game. There is no game yet. The game has yet to be sold, and people are already acting like it's been released and releasing tips, tricks, lore, etc, for a game that they don't have access to. They are essentially lying all for the sake of getting that sweet, sweet youtube money by milking as much of it out of the title drop as they can. The only ones I forgive are the trailer analysis videos because that's content made from content avaliable, but imagine you never heard about the game until you saw one of these "tears of the kingdom tips" videos and then looked up the game only to find out that its not even released. I'm just disappointed in how many people in the Zelda community are willing to, essentially, lie and pretend that they're in the know to the rest of the community all for the youtube cash.

It was quite a while ago now but when I played Dark Souls I fell into the trap of constantly looking up stuff online, late last year I started Sekiro and made a point of figuring out things for myself, I beat every single boss on my own, I only watched boss guides after I'd beaten them to see what tactics other people used. I did spoil bits and pieces because I was so into the game I couldn't help myself but to check out youtube or online content here or there, but I kept it to a bare minimum.

    • I feel you on this, it's ruined far too many classic games I think I'd otherwise be able to properly appreciate - partly due to permanently missable content in games like Final Fantasy 7. So recently, I played one of these older games I'd yet to beat because of this, Vandal Hearts (great game, though unfortunately and unrightly not listed on the Playstation Store). This time, though, I went after secrets I'd remembered, but elected to not look anything else up about the game. So I enjoyed the ride, saw how the game ended, and it was beautiful; ended up being worth it. The advice I have for you is to just not give a crap about other people's experiences with games and just find your own path, because what a good game gives you shouldn't rely on what other people enjoyed about it. If you like the game enough that you'll want to play it again some other time, _then_ try and find stuff you didn't know about - maybe even keep a notebook or something if you're a completionist, so you can note down stuff you don't want to miss next time.

  • I agree with you fundamentally that games are best enjoyed without assistance, and that seeking assistance should really be reserved for when you're very frustrated. However, on the other hand... I can't help but feel like everyone has a right to enjoy a video game however they want. If someone wants to play a game from start to finish with a walkthrough, who am I to tell them that that's wrong?

    @theftking@theftking Жыл бұрын
    • Because after people play through the game whilst being assisted at all times ,their opinion might differ from the one they would have if they played without assistance. You don't go watch a horror movie just to get a spreadsheet off a web with jumpscare times. That in turn affects what video game producers create. If you wanna cater to a spreadsheet-hold-my-hand-daddy you will create a different, possibly more boring game rather than creating a game designed with playing it with no assistance in mind. People also often think less about the things they understand and more of themselvs the more experienced they are. I m sure you know the Dunning-Krueger effect. Such people when faced with reality for example, encountering a hard boss will experience a lot of frustration, lots more than the standard player possibly. I personally tried playing through HK without assistance although I had to look up a few things up on the wiki but that was near the end game anyway. PS: Love your content.

Fromsoft games are notorious for being very conservative with hints. Sometimes it works, but sometimes entire quest lines have to be abandoned because the NPC changes to a completely new location on a massive map So I had to find these 2 medallions. After days of searching the map, I decided to quit for a few months. Getting tired of going through forts and caves only to find a magic wand or a useless talisman. Was I missing something? A clue? Did someone explain where they were but I zoned out? I've talked to every npc in the hold, but no luck. So I looked it up. They're in 2 random forts at opposite sides of the map. No clues. Just 2 tiny forts carrying items essential to progress. After this I started to get more liberal with my internet usage. It started with looking up some smithing stones, maybe a weapon teirlist, but by the time I got to the final boss, I created a build specifically to hunt him down. This forced me to go on a scavenger hunt of quest lines I could never find on my own. And I ended up exploring and enjoying more of the game than I ever could have blind. If I had decided not to look anything up, I would've quit long before I beat the game.

  • The buildup to Nosk I will never forget, I remember how oblivious I was thinking "ah this couldnt be a threat in any way, shape or form" but the sheer FEAR I felt as soon as he started to break and twitch his body transforming I will never forget. I just feel bad for people that spoil the game for themselves, especially Nosk.

  • I personally really try to not use a guide too. If there is one which I have no idea of solving then I search up the area and look for a walkthrough so I don’t know how many parts are still left, but in my opinion a not spoiled game makes the best experience you could have. I went in portal 2 blind and it was amazing discovering the puzzles by myself and the story.

  • I get your point, but starting Undertale without knowing that you should be trying Pacifist from the start is a miserable experience.

  • I remember when I was playing Hollow Knight, I did get a few things (specifically bosses) spoiled for me. But when my friend was playing Hollow Knight at my house, I was guiding him through the game, but also spoiling nothing, and he never looked anything up for himself. He said that having someone guide him through the game while having nothing spoiled was probly the best experience he could've had.

    • I really think hollow knight is a game that is super easy to get stuck on. Yes it's not ideal to have to look something up, but without someone to walk you through it sometimes you have to. I've literally done the same thing where I sit with my friend / bf and just watch them and maybe gently nudge them. Like yeah it's probably cooler to just be amazing at the game or suck until u get better but if you barely missed a bench right before a fight it might be nice to have someone help to keep that from happening.

  • I agree looking up answers is usually bad, but sometimes being able to get *hints* is good. Especially for some of your examples, where just knowing “not a glitch” would be good. Because glitches *happen.* My first playthrough of the original Portal, my graphics settings were messed up somehow, and all the glass looked opaque. It’s surprisingly easy to play a lot of the game that way, not realize it’s not supposed to have frosted glass, and miss important parts of the experience.

    @danielrhouck@danielrhouck Жыл бұрын
    • It's true, that would be ideal. Reddit's the wrong place to get "not a glitch" as an answer, unfortunately.

    • This is why the best thing you can do is have a friend who has also played through to sort of guide you honestly. I know it’s not always achievable but it sure does help sometimes

  • I think that to each their own. There are instances when spoilers doesn't matter that much or even more: When you know before hand that something is going to happen it will be all about how that exact thing is going to happen, what leads to that certain point, and so on. But in some cases when all the fun is in finding out stuff like in Zelda: TOTK, Outer Wilds, Twelwe Minutes, and some other games like that, it is all about finding out yourself, the fun CAN be ruined. Then again, some parts of an older Zelda games is so hard to figure out it becomes just frustrating and can simply make you waste hours trying to figure out stuff and never make it.

  • I am in the process of playing Hollow Knight blind! It’s incredible! I downloaded a week ago and have easily put in 20+ hours since… so happy I’m going into it without spoilers. I even had a few videos pop up I thought looked fun, like “forcing my girlfriend to play hollow knight.” I just bookmarked them and named them “After Hollow Knight.” The day I finish the game will be a day of many hollow knight KZhead videos….

  • Breath of the Wild was the game that taught me just how much looking stuff up can ruin a gaming experience. I went into the game completely blind and I only bought it because it was one of like 3 games on Switch at launch. Figuring out the puzzles and simply exploring the world all on my own made it feel like *I* was presonally discovering all of this stuff. If I couldn't figure something out, I'd go exploring in the area or talk to nearby NPCs to see if they could clue me in. It felt super immersive to try and figure things out using only the tools presented to me within the game world itself. It was so cool the first time I realized I could equip the flame sword to keep myself warm in the cold regions instead of eating the peppers. I never looked anything up for that game and ended up having one of my greatest gaming experiences of all time as a result. All of my friends played the game by looking everything up the second something became difficult, and while I'm sure they enjoyed the game very much, I feel like they really soured their own experience as a result.

    • Yeah sometimes the best advice for a piece of media is to never look it up. Same with The Good Place which is a show. I initially didn’t wanna watch it but heard it’s good, just DON’T read anything about it. They were right, it was amazing.

    • the only things i searched up in that game were 3 things: location of the last 2 great fairy fountains (cuz fk that lol), and ways to farm arrows. i’m really glad i searched up the second thing, because it led me to doing the tarrey town quest (i also used a guide for that quest, cuz i knew there was gonna be so much backtracking and i didn’t wanna bother - that’s my 3rd search). botw is one of the best games i’ve ever played. waiting for a discount or smth for totk lol

    • For me the game that made me realise that spoiling myself was not a good idea is Dark Souls. Not that I checked for guides or ask questions, but after playing DS3 (yeah, I played that one first) I read and watched a shit ton of Dark Souls lore to the point where Dark Souls 1 wasn't really new for me, which sucks because I regret doing that to this day.

  • Yeah I'm one of those people that looks things up. I beat Half-Life 1 and the first 3 Splinter Cell games by following a guide to a tee (Shoutout to BigMacDavis and Centerstrain01). Those games still became some of my favorite games of all time. I don't do it for every game, but sometimes it's the only thing that motivates me to finish a game. I also tend to replay the same games over and over again rather than explore new ones. This also spreads to other forms of media like movies and TV shows (I don't spoil films/shows for myself but i tend to re-watch them multiple times instead of watching something new). I'm willing to bet there's a bigger issue within me that causes me to be like this, but it is what it is.

  • Refusing to look up help no matter what. I like how you think. I do it sometimes but usually it’s after multiple failures and confusion. Those shrines on breath of the wild get me sometimes, but a lot of times if I’m patient and wander around a while, I get it. Cool video.

  • My problem note is that I always want to find everything. This ends to me running around instead of following the story and following the game. And that’s also my biggest problem with open world games.

    • I don't think that's a bad thing at all though; if an open-world game _doesn't_ make you want to go off the beaten path it generally means they haven't made the world interesting or exciting enough

    • Trying to be a completionist can really ruin a game experience and it's often something I need to protect myself from. I give myself a pass in looking stuff up if I'm close to getting all of it but I still need like 1 to have all of them so I can unlock something, but these days I try to force myself to just not bother with getting everything, as it really kills the excitement. Tears of the Kingdom ends up being a surprising antidote to this. In some way it's an utter completionists nightmare as there's just constantly so many things to do, everywhere and all of the time. Most of the time there's several things in sight to do or collect and by the time you get to any of them you've come across several more. It's so much that it turns back on itself and just makes me feel it's fine to miss stuff.

  • Ok, since this just happened and i still have this video on my mind i want to mention a videogame experience that kind of goes against this video. Exploring in a game, clear chest ive figured out how to get to behind blank wall, try hitting it, explosives, nothing. Look it up, all i need to do it press A against the wall. Not something the game comunicates, its very vague about everything

  • To be fair, it's completely fine to ask while playing metroidvania if you just suck at platforming or if this place is supposed to be visited later. And in that example, I would just say "Go somewhere else, come back later" Same thing with boss fights, it's fine to ask of you're not skilled enough, you can't see the pattern or if you're too early. But asking about every single thing can be obnoxious. And it can spoil your fun. But that ladder part is heavily dependant on answers you'll get. And when it comes to mass hysteria subreddits, it's fun to pretend sometimes that world you live in is just a tiny bit a little bit less cruel
