The owner was of Indian descent but was born in Kenya.
After graduating from the University of West London, he had just returned to East Africa when the Ugandan president Idi Amin expelled his country's South Asian minority in 1972.
Living in neighbouring Kenya, He decided to move in case "some Idi Amin type of guy comes in and makes you a beggar overnight," he said in a 2012 interview.
He came to Canada in 1975, where, confronted by the cold and the snow, he said he couldn't think of any other business opportunities but to manufacture fire logs.
"When I got into the fire log business it was a big thing to be macho. Get a chainsaw and cut your own wood and bag it yourself," he said in the 2012 interview.
Instead, he offered convenient products that ignited easily and were made from inexpensive sawdust and wax.
His Toronto-based company, became North America's biggest manufacturer of fire logs.
His companies also have made glue sticks, stationery tapes and mailing supplies. He has now shifted his interests to being a financial backer for technology startups.
According to the architect who designed his house, the property was built in 2005 and includes two outdoor tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool, a home theatre and a five-car garage.
This home is an amazing example of peak rich and luxury in the mid 2000’s.

  • It’s disgusting to rip this house down. Millionaires, Hollywood etc love to preach to us about saving the environment and global warming but then they do things like this and get away with. It should not be allowed. This is so wasteful. This mega mansion is gorgeous

    • You're right... it shouldn't be allowed. Perhaps government should require an inspection of the condition. If it is in good shape then no. If they want to tear it down, they have to be fined, taxed something substantial. Maybe even forced to preserve the good materials like floors, stairs, cupboards etc for auction.

    • Believe me, if they could sell it, they wouldn't be knocking it down. Unfortunately these houses just don't sell and they sit for years. I blame the overinflated market. These days, nobody is willing to pay that kind of money for somebody else's dream house that needs work, when they could buy a brand new one for the same price.

That library area on the top floor, no words, the pool, hot tub. I can’t imagine the life lived there. Oh and the basement ballroom and theater! What was the purpose of the area of stones near the main staircase I wonder. Yes the 1% have “made it” but I wonder if they’re happy. Maybe a bit shallow to consider that this is not good enough or large enough for them. All of these beautiful resource materials to be destroyed and trashed. I will never understand. I wonder if they’re rich and generous of heart or rich and stingy. Enough of my opinionated ranting. Thank you Ethan for sharing this EPIC adventure! You’re enthusiasm is always contagious.
