Netherlands: Polders and Windmills - Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Guide - Travel Bite
Watch the full episode: • The Netherlands: Beyon... Holland's polder land was once covered by the sea, but it was eventually encircled by dikes and dams, then drained. To pump out all that water, the Dutch used one of their leading natural resources: the wind. The countryside with grassfields and villages crossed by thousands of canals is one of the most peaceful landscapes ive ever seen
Hey Rick, I, as a Dutchman, really enjoyed watching this video. You gave the right information and you really know how to captivate your audience. Good Job!
Beautiful country, i hope i can visit it one time! Greetings from Switzerland!
"God made the world, but the Dutch made Holland." The rich history never ends with Rick. Beautiful.
I often wonder why holland was never deemed one of the wonders of the world...
the Netherlands you mean. Holland are just two provinces in thsat country! I don;t call the USA the United States of Carolina because two states have that name?
Probably because it's not hat exciting? There's only a few good cities I'd consider beautiful, the countryside is flat as a pancake and is only beatriul in certain areas. I love the Netherlands though.
The Netherlands IS the home to one of the modern wonders of the world ooff, the Delta Works that keep our little country from flooding during storms is one of the modern world wonders.
Robert Heinrich von Seyfenstern Most polders are in The Hollands, plus everyone refers to it as holland. It is not a big deal. Plus literally everything important is in HOLLAND. Amsterdam, the hague, leiden, haarlem, schiphol, de randstad... and also all the tourist things are in holland: Volendam, delft, zaanse schans, kinderdijk, scheveningen. The most people live in holland, the government is in Holland etc.. what does Overijsel have? Not much
Me too. It's an incredible masterpiece of engineering.
Admirable.. i wish i can visit the netherlands.
WowWindmills in Holland.❤
Unveiled mesmerizing beauty of Holland. It would be ecstatic to relish it. 😊
I love windmills, they are amazing , strong and beautiful machines , thanks for this video ❤👌🏼⚙👌🏼
I am descended from grandparents and a very long lineage who came from Holland specifically. In the family history book it talks about the draining of the sea to create the many polders, the redirection of the Ryn River (Rhine) into man made sloots, vliets, meers, and poels; (1400-1700). It also mentions the history on how the iconic name of Holland came to be. In Old Dutch, when Holland was a large collection of islands, wetlands, and peat bogs covered in trees, the Dutch who lived there called it originally Holtland (Holt-land) or in Old Dutch; Holtlandt, instead of the modern Holland. Holtland was the direct translation of 'wooded-land' as it was forested.
Thanks a lot
I am very thankful for you because you seeing me polder land 🤗🤗🤗🤗🖤🖤🖤
Thank you for updating your video's!
Those are some beautiful windmills!
thanks for providing the nice video with the touch of science this time ...
my mind is blown away
This is so cool!
Amazing minds and manpower to have done this without all the machinery we have today!!!
We use pumping houses with diesel-electric generators today. Windmills are only run for tourists and for historic interest.
Even one steam pump in the late 19th century replaced 17 !!! windmills in the Alblasserwaard (Kinderdijk ;) )
AvariceUntied . There is a working steam pump station in Friesland which is in working order and is sometimes actually used when needed.
Wonderful!
Mesmerized ❤️
I used to think the windmills in the Netherlands were for providing power... That's interesting.
Don't get hit by the wing of the mill. It's an expression we have 'he was hit by the (wing of) the mill'. Meaning he's nuts, insane. In the past sometimes it happened people got literally hit by the wing and ended up with brain damage and went nuts.
Slick, vid Rick.
Thank u sir
Nice
Why do I watch this? I live here! xD
You should have said you were going to Schokland! I live next to it!
A small beautiful clever kingdom that fights against the sea
How did they get rid of all the salt from the former sea bed?
Most of the salt got just pumped out with the water. The remains got absorb by the ground.
They ate it.
Where is this in Netherlands? Would love to show my kids working of a windmill.
There are multple place where you can visit working windmills, the 'Zaanse Schans' near Zaanstad is one of them, they got several types of windmills 0:41 is a shot of the 'Zaanse Schans'
@@remko2 Thank you
And also you can visit windmills on Kinderdijk, 🙂🌷
Awesome video, but isn't Monaco the most densely populated country in Europe?
yes it is
Andrew Feng Indeed, BUT 30 thousend inhabitants compared to more than 17 million people is a bit auquard...
You didn't say how the Dam/levee's were built. Obviously they didn't have bulldozers a few hundred years ago.
+John Smith shovels, wheelbarrows and a ton of elbow grease from a lot of people
Thought it might be some sort of flintstone type construction vehicle.
There is actually a movie about a Katrina like disaster in the south of the Netherlands called ' the storm' (which made the Dutch restructure their levees). In it you see how an emergency levee was made when the old got breached..... sandbags and a boat and lots of manpower. Its fascinating. What kind of people see the ocean and think ' I bet ya I can tame that'. Lol
hello How are you doing today?? - Who is watching in 2021
How
This land gave birth to a genius like Christian Huygens .
It’s so crazy to remember how small Europe is compared to the USA
Europe is significantly bigger than the US. I mean…. Russia is in Europe
Europe is roughly 1 million square km larger than the US has roughly twice the population
@@tj4234 try looking at Maine to California douchebag
@@stenbak88 Try to think of Europe, not the EU, they're significantly different. Douchebag. And even the EU (being half the size of the US) has more people living in it.

What do they grow on all that reclaimed land? weed?
+4q2pab Comedian here guys! I think we're supposed laugh!
No, the weird thing with our legislation is that we can buy weed, but not grow it.
The Netherlands is the 2nd largest exporter of agricultural products in the world. It's most likely you eat dutch vegetables or fruit every day......meanwhile listening to music coming from your CD or DVD player......ah. by the way, that's a dutch invention also........
better on speed 1.25. not jibberish and understandable
