Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival,” “Blade Runner 2049”) directs Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Dune,” the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestseller of the same name. A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence-a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential-only those who can conquer their fear will survive. The film stars Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name,” “Little Women”), Rebecca Ferguson (“Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep,” “Mission: Impossible - Fallout”), Oscar Isaac (the “Star Wars” franchise) Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (“Milk,” “Avengers: Infinity War”), Stellan Skarsgård (HBO’s “Chernobyl,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Dave Bautista (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “Avengers: Endgame”), Stephen McKinley Henderson (“Fences,” “Lady Bird”), Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” HBO’s “Euphoria”), Chang Chen (“Mr. Long,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), David Dastmalchian (“Blade Runner 2049,” “The Dark Knight”), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Netflix’s “Sex Education”), with Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years,” “Assassin’s Creed”), with Jason Momoa (“Aquaman,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Skyfall”). Villeneuve directed “Dune” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth based on the novel of the same name written by Frank Herbert. Villeneuve also produced the film with Mary Parent, Cale Boyter and Joe Caracciolo, Jr. The executive producers are Tanya Lapointe, Joshua Grode, Herbert W. Gains, Jon Spaihts, Thomas Tull, Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt and Kim Herbert. Behind the scenes, Villeneuve reteamed with two-time Oscar-nominated production designer Patrice Vermette (“Arrival,” “Sicario,” “The Young Victoria”), two-time Oscar-nominated editor Joe Walker (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival,” “12 Years a Slave”), two-time Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Paul Lambert (“First Man,” “Blade Runner 2049”), and Oscar-winning special effects supervisor Gerd Nefzer (“Blade Runner 2049”). He also collaborated for the first time with Oscar-nominated director of photography Greig Fraser (“Lion,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”); three-time Oscar-nominated costume designer
Jacqueline West (“The Revenant,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Quills”) and co-costume designer Bob Morgan; and stunt coordinator Tom Struthers (“The Dark Knight” trilogy, “Inception”). Oscar-winning and multiple Oscar-nominated composer Hans Zimmer (“Blade Runner 2049,” “Inception,” “Gladiator,” “The Lion King”) is creating the score. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Present “Dune.” The film is slated to be released in theaters on December 18, 2020.

    • The writer Edgar Rice Burroughs influenced so much with "A Princess of Mars." I have this weird feeling that "Dune 2" will break into the top 100 movies on my favorites list. I love "Star Wars" since a child. I hated "Dune" in 1984 with Sting. I love Sting as an musician. "Dune" in 2021 is good and I really liked it, but somehow the Anti-Christ (Mahdi) making it to Jerusalem is unlikely to surpass "Star Wars." It might be interesting in a SCI-FI film to see Islam's vision of peace, and so I am glad that "Dune" will have a part two, but I'm not holding my breath that it will make the top 100 favorite movies. As a child when I read the book I felt it pulled from Lawrence of Arabia and Islamic culture of the Caucasus or Bedouin tribes of Arabia, but I never got the idea of Atreides being America with capitalism waning. The movie in 2021 helped me see that connection. The Fremen call Paul the Mahdi is a dead give away that this whole thing is an Islamic end times vision. Hence the dead bodies that Paul sees piling up as he fulfills his place in history, by leaving America and being a Muslim as that is how the movie ends. Here is where these three related series have fallen so far and any you don't see aren't loved enough to mention. 20) Star Wars: the Empire Strikes Back (1980) 21) Star Wars: a New Hope (1977) 112) John Carter (2012) 148) Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) 269) Dune (2021) To quote the author "I am showing you the superhero syndrome and your own participation in it." - Frank Herbert, speaking about "Dune." "A Princess of Mars," from 1912, inspired things like: Star Wars, Avatar, Indiana Jones, Superman, and Dune. "A Princess of Mars" even inspired Ray Douglas Bradbury. If you want to see a movie of it, see "John Carter" from 2012. But the main reason for me to watch Dune 2 is to see whether Zendaya Coleman surpasses female actresses I loved in the past. Another in the top 100 and she will surpass all female actresses at least for having three movies in the top 100. The most have six movies on the list and two doing better than her top two. 10) Spiderman: No Way Home (2021) 96) The Greatest Showman (2017) 190) Spiderman: Far from Home (2019) 197) Spiderman: Homecoming (2017) 269) Dune (2021)

    • @@vitaliyjuterbog8912 No point in turning a book into a film if you are going to adapt it 100% 'faithfully'. Not only is it arguably pointless but it is also somewhat impossible. Books have far more time (along with other liberties) than films do to tell their story/stories. In some cases it's a blessing because it forces a screenwriter and/or director to get creative to make up for the things they are forced to cut out as well as strip down unnecessary 'fluff' that doesn't really help develop the story/characters. Not to mention the obvious fact of a book has to rely on the reader's imagination, so it has to paint a vivid picture with words, whereas film is a visual medium so that bit is built in.

  • I must admit, I have become obsessed. This has been the best introduction to a novel series for me since Harry Potter. And looking at how big that story became it was inevitable I'd be swept in by the beauty of another. Frank Herbert is a genius and in spite of this movie, even in the spectacular attempt it has made to echo the story, indeed it is the writing that is the bright moon that sparks the light in this gem. A definite recommend.

Was it better than LotR? Well… to me, yes. It may be because I find fantasy really tedious, but LotR was incredibly boring to me, full of clichéd characters, battles, and lots of people walking around. Dune though? • for those wondering why they are using swords thousands of years into the future: 0:49 most people carry these personal shields on them. they completely deflect any fast moving projectiles. guns are obsolete, but there are beam energy weapons called Lasguns, which are somewhat common. however, they arent widely used because a Lasgun beam hitting a personal shield triggers a massive explosion (pretty much nuclear). so both people would die. This led to a unique blade fighting style where you must move your blade slowly enough to enter the shield, but fast enough to outsmart your opponent. Dune is full of stuff like this, i love it edit: read the first book. i promise you, if you find this kind of thing interesting you will love the world frank herbert created. it's hard at first to read and understand, but is the best fiction i've ever read

  • Just to add to all the gushing sentiments, I have always been obsessed with sci fi since seeing Star Wars as a little kid and I was completely oblivious to Dune. I was aware of it as I got older but didn’t think much of the origins of Sci fi until now as an adult that I’ve acquired a taste for the dark and philosophical side of sci fi. When I saw Blade Runner for the first time I started to understand the true vehicle of sci fi as foresight to our repercussions of the present. When I saw Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 it was like a watershed moment where I witnessed the most compelling design of a future I had ever seen, so nuanced that it felt real. When I saw this trailer I was already a Villeneuve disciple and was aware of the reverence of Dune. Last week I saw it in IMAX and it was the single best experience I have ever had in the cinema in my life. I felt like a kid again. It felt like a film made for every single kid out there who has stared up at the stars with wild imagine. It’s safe to say Dune is the mind killer, I’m completely smitten and I can’t stop watching it again and again. Thank you Denis!

I have DREAMED of THIS production of Dune forever...and yes, I've seen the others and was SO disappointed. In addition, I have not gone into a regular movie theater in over 20 years...but this October I will patiently wait in line to purchase a ticket at the biggest screen theater I can find which is showing Dune and IMMERSE myself in it...ahhhhh.

  • Not many will realize it but, the music in the trailer, which is not used in the film itself, is an homage to the director Alejandro Jodorowsky. He was putting together a version of Dune in the late sixties that would have rivaled 2001 for sheer vision and psychedelic brilliance ( a documentary on the attempt to make it, called Jodorowsky's Dune is well worth watching.) Casting choices would have included Orson Welles as Baron Harkonen and Mick Jagger as Paul. The music was going to be provided by... Pink Floyd. Jodorowsky was never able to raise enough money for the project, and had to abandon it. Someof the designers he connected together: Brian Froud, H. R. Gieger, went on to make Alien . I do think, Villeneuves inclusion of this music is an appropriate nod to that vision.

By the time the others would’ve industrialized and had empire plans India/Mughals, Egypt, the Ottomans, etc. would’ve industrialized and risen too, changing the game altogether. It isn’t taught in school but many developing countries were in the process of industrialization but were directly interrupted by the British empire wanting to keep them weak. Why let the other Europeans industrialize you ask? That’s not where their assets or future ambitions would be. English manufacturers actually even travelled throughout Europe helping set up industry in the same way. It makes sense if you’re trying to set up an empire and stranglehold on trade.

  • For anyone wondering. The reason they’re using swords and knives in the future is because they all have personal energy shields which can stop lasers/ bullets but can’t stop slow moving objects like blades.

    • @@brian2440 @Blackjack is half right. There is also the problem that when a beam from a laser gun comes in contact with a shield, it creates what equivalent to a small nuclear detonation. I.e. if you shoot someone with a shield, youre both dead. (And yes, thr tactic of blowing up the shield with a laser gun anyway in a suicidal move is used in the book) Therefore, many battles use blunt force objects.

    • Nicolas Thorngage I get that it’s sci fi but if your shields are fast enough to stop a metal object moving faster than the speed of sound at you, it makes zero sense for the same shield to not move fast enough to stop metal objects moving at slower speeds Idk this movie seems to be a lot more like fantasy to me with more of the space age elements like a Star Trek or Star Wars, whereas I think of sci fi to be rooted in practicality but with fictional events taking place like Arrival or Inception

  • director Denis Villenueve shows us a phrase that could have several meanings within the subconscious "Dreams are messages from the depths." In the case of DUNE, it implies that the visions are an opportunity to see a future that could happen or is simply just a prediction, that is the journey that Paul Atreides looks out on
