  • *PLEASE READ* (Note this is mostly aimed at parents) Hamsters are not toys to give to your children! The person who gave me her said they bought it for their (6yo ish) son and he had gotten bored of her and therefore wanted to get rid of her.She wasnt in good condition and wasnt taken care of.Props to them not keeping it and at least acknowledge that she wasnt living the best life but it shouldnt have got to that stage, The reasons why hamsters have such a short lifespan is because they aren't taken seriously and are just handed to children with no knowledge or understanding at simple request.Animals are for life-wether they are a hamster,budgie or dog...please think it through before getting a pet for your child.If your child has done thorough research and can prove they can look after the animal they want then go ahead but animals are living beings who need love and affection.They arent a one week thing theyre a commitment.please spread awareness about this!!

    • Absolutely!!! Look at the shelters- half of the animals are christmas gifts! People should also have in mind if they can afford a pet! Not only food and toys, but also vetbills. How many cats have one litter after another because people can't afford sterilization. It's a never ending circle, caused by peoples dumbness ... i hate these selfish dumba...s🤬🤬🤬

    • My kids insisted on getting a hamster just over two years ago, I agreed, the thing is she’s my responsibility. I make them watch everytime I feed, change her water, clean her cage, let her play. I want them to have an understanding of how much work and responsibility a pet is, but I refuse to let a pet suffer to teach that lesson. She was a rescue, she was given away because she “had too many babies”. She’s extremely sweet and gentle, probably the best hamster I’ve owned and it just breaks my heart that people view them as disposable. Btw she’s going on two and a half years living with me, gets lots of exercise and daily fruits/veggies as well as her hamster food. I was told she was probably at the end of her life when we got her, obviously not and I’m very glad I got a chance to prove them wrong.

  • A while back, my sister moved out and left her hamster in my basement and didn't even tell me about it. I was down there cleaning one day and heard noises, and found her scratching around in her tiny cage for food. We gave her a big tank with tons of soft bedding to tunnel through and everything. We spoiled her until she passed a couple months later. It just seemed so cruel to me that my sister just left her to die alone in the dark. We loved getting up every morning and watching her wake up and peek her little head about with her sleepy little eyes. So precious.

  • I worked at a pet store for two years, and one of the things I loved about that place was that we were required to make sure clients had EVERYTHING the animal would need before we were allowed to sell. It also put me in a great position to inform folks that even if the animal wasn't on the same level as a person in terms of intelligence, it still had needs, wants, and feelings. (I took home a disabled dwarf ham from that job - in defiance of all expectations, he lived for FOUR YEARS. His name was Gimpy, and he was made of sass and hatred. We still loved him)

    • I worked at a pet store that bred mice and rats for snake food. The fish were treated with more dignity than some of the rats. So sad. You’re lucky to have been at one of the decent stores. I actually wouldn’t sell their hamsters becasue they were so mean, I told people they bite and I won’t touch them, and if they want a rodent to get a rat instead lol. It worked most times. I had one person still want a hamster, and I’m like, ok it’s your funeral, I still wouldn’t touch it.

  • Hamsters run 5 miles in the wild. They require a LOT of space and enrichment. Most pet stores don't even sell the right sized wheels for them. If you want a hamster, you will spend more money than getting a dog. Hamsters are VERY expensive and 99% of things will have to be ordered online. They only live a few years. There isn't a commercial diet that is good for them, so you have to mix multiple brands. Tubes are dangerous, balls are dangerous and wire wheels are dangerous. Don't keep hamsters together, never do a full cage clean unless they get mites. They love organic baby food puffs. Do not get a syrian, they require tons more room, and even if you give them a giant 10 foot long enclosure, they will still be grumpy and hate you, especially females. Hamsters are NOT for beginners or for children or teens. Hamsters are an advanced adult pet that costs a lot of money, especially at the vet.

It can look like a piece of nature during the day and and at night you see your hamster explore, dig and forage for food. It still needs to be cleaned and is more work, but it looks so pretty.

    • @@margottenenbaumz I have three guinea pigs that free roam in my bedroom. They are VERY expensive and take up my entire floor, but it is worth it. I have over 20 pets and they are like my children. I spend more money on them than I do myself. I spend more money on feeding my guinea pigs every month than I do myself. My pets cost a lot of time and money. I'm moving out soon and I'm also working on getting my first job, going to HISET classes twice weekly, studying hours a day for the HISET, preparing for college, and dealing with my health. I have a lot of mental issues and physical issues. I've been anorexic since I was 12 and now I am severely anemic and I have to get iron transfusions soon. I get dizzy often and it's hard to breathe sometimes due to my asthma and anemia. I never let that get in the way of my pets though, they are my #1 priority! I care for my pets more than people care for their children. I've even trained my guinea pigs and chickens! My dog is a retired service dog that I also trained, and I'm getting my new prospect soon which will also be owner trained. Having pets is VERY hard work, luckily I'm great at multitasking and schedules because I'm autistic. Having a plan for everything makes life so much easier!

    • 100%. Even though I was 9-12ish, I treated mine like a member of the family. She had a big 3 level cage with tubes going all over, but I also let her out to roam around as much I could. She was big and could fit a ferret leash, so I would take her out to play in nature all the time. I read all the books, researched all the different types of food she could and couldn’t eat, and pretty much every dollar I had went to her. When we took a road trip, she came with us. She had to, there was no way I was leaving her with someone else who might not give her the same love and care as I would. When she got a big lump and the vet recommended I put her down, I was devastated. She was my best friend. We had a funeral for her and I made scrapbook pages of all our adventures.

The children were begging their mom to let them have a kitten. I heard Mom tell them that since they already had a cat, they couldn't get a kitten. The kids countered with a suggestion that they take their adult cat to a shelter, then get the kitten. Mom didn't even hesitate to agree with that. I was horrified & told one of the kids that they couldn't just throw their other cat away. The child said they wouldn't do that, they would just bring her back to the store. It's no wonder our society has no idea how to take care of Anything--alive, or not! It's so sad. 😢 Thank you for being kind to this tiny furbaby. ❤

The number of calls we get about “can we take back this or that Guinea pig” combined with people asking for “cheap, rehomed Guinea pigs” blows my mind. When you meet your future spouse. When you have kids.”

    • This reminded me of the first hamster I got. My husband bought him for me as a surprise. When I opened that box, I started crying. I instantly loved him. He had wet tail though, so I called petsmart to see what I'm supposed to do and they said that we can return him and get a new one, like he was a pair of pants. I told them "no, I just want him to get better" and they took him for a week and called me to come and get him because he was all better. I loved that hamster with my whole heart and cried for 3 months after he passed away. He was bestest friend, even my dad (he stayed with us for a bit) was shocked with the relationship I had with a hamster. The next hamster we got, my mom (this time it was her staying with us for a bit) was shocked to see how I treated my ham hams. They never treated their animals well, unless it was a dog. Even the cats we had, growing up, wasn't treated well because in my mom's exact words "cats are a dime a dozen". She was also shocked about how I treat my cat and that changed her whole perspective on them. She now has a catio for hers and freaks out if he leaves for a couple days. She thought I was being mean because I don't let my cat roam outside forever and that he gets supervised outside time and doesn't leave the yard. But, fails to realize how mean it is to dump cats out in the middle of the desert.

      @TheRosieBoy@TheRosieBoyАй бұрын
    • @TheRosieBoy you sound like a really caring person. Completely agree with you that any time that cats are outside should be heavily supervised. My MIL walks her cat in her neighborhood on leash. Unsupervised, they can wreck havoc on the environment, as they are phenomenal ambush hunters and can hunt to extinction our endangered native species. Plus they are at risk of coyote attacks, vehicles hitting them, etc. so it's really better all around

    • @@TheRosieBoyI get it, small animals are just as unique and full of personality as dogs or cats. They build strong bonds with people, and can be affectionate. My guinea pig, before he passed away a few months ago, wasn't a cuddler, he showed his love and affection through mostly just hanging out with you, enjoying your company. He only was a cuddler when he was scared or stressed after vet visits (nail trims, because I have hand tremors/shakey hands), I would hold him up to my chest, and he would nuzzle into my neck as I told him it was ok, momma's here. He was my best friend, but more than anything, he was my baby. He passed at 6 years old. I miss him everyday. He was the big tough man type, throwing his weight around, violently rearranging his furniture lol, yanking the hay from his manger before sticking his face in it to eat it. Loudly drinking water. He also bounced back from problems like it was nothing, heck he survived a 6 hour plane ride like a champ. He also loved to watch his shows. He'd sit there and watch what was on, turn, grab some hay, put his attention back to his shows as he ate the hay in his mouth like popcorn. He was silly, very smart, strong, but also a sensitive momma's boy, and a diva. He was a complicated lil guy, but it's clear he saw himself as 10 feet tall. Gregarious and boisterous, just a big, friendly, goofy personality, who loved being a star.

I sold them, because it wasn’t appropriate to keep an animal when I was in such a bad mental state. This isn’t the case here, but I do think generalization like this is harmful. It wasn’t my fault I lost interest in my little ones. Shit happens. I wasn’t going to be a good owner. I made the conscious decision to decide it was in their best interest and mine to get rid of them.

Also if she is going to be living at the workplace, she should have some sort of shelter during bad weather or maybe someone could bring her home, or if she's more of a feral cat, or barn cat, maybe bring her to a barn for the winter at least. The rabies vaccine is very important though. People can catch it and not even realize that they have it for months to a year and once they develop the symptoms, it is too late. It is fatal at that point. You'd said people had been scratched, and bitten, and it spreads through bites and also just scratches too, so it is worrisome if she has not gotten a vaccine.

I would block every escape route and let her out to run around my room where she'd climb up onto my shoulder to look around. No socialization. They’d try to hide at the slightest noise but had nowhere to hide. She originally got just one Guinea pig, but I asked her to get it some friends as they’re social creatures. I regret asking for that now. They were not taken care of, the bedding would stink up the whole house as it went so long without changing. I was moved out at this point so I didn’t know how bad it really was until it was too late. They eventually thirsted to death. Everyone there just let it happen. I would implore my brother or mom to just rehome them when I visited, but they wouldn’t. It makes me physically sick to think about the quality of those little Guinea pigs’ lives and their deaths. • I had a hamster with my roommate and she had a typical cage but we had the cage inside a table enclosure with tons of toys and treats. She could roam around whenever she wanted and then go back into her cage and sleep. She also had a big wheel. I miss her so much, she passed a few weeks ago.

  • As newlyweds our first pet was a hamster. We named him Swueeku. He was nocturnal and our first few nights he kept us awake with his squeaky little exercise wheel. He was cute , affectionate and even got loose once or twice, forcing us to move appliances to rescue him. He liked riding in the car He'd sit on the dash board and look out the window. One day he seemed not quite himself, and as a couple of days went by, we became so concerned, we took him to the vet . The vet looked him over and informed us he was dying of old age!He was only 2 yrs old! We were crushed ! That little guy brought us love and laughter and losing him was for us a tragedy.We held each other and sobbed. We had him buried at Bubbling Wells Pet Cemetery . It actually made our love for each other stronger. Seems funny . But we made 47 years together . Having Squeaky in the beginning ,and all we did after had helped to bond us . I still remember the little handful of joy

  • Thank you for giving her a second chance in a healthier and happier environment! My Boomer MIL is exactly that parent that buys animals when she shouldn’t. Did with my husband and his siblings when they were kids, going so far as to brag about throwing my husbands pet rat out of the window because it disgusted her, and luckily he found it alive and had to rehome it so his mother didn’t hurt it again. But she now buys animals for my children. My girls are a bit older and have the compassion necessary to care for animals, but I now have a Parakeet and a new puppy (she’s Klee Kai and Aussie so she’s exhausting rn) that I have to care for on top of the usual responsibilities that come with life. She got my daughter a Beagle puppy when she turned 7 which we wound up taking in and I loved that dog almost like another child, we gave her a great life until she was killed by a hit and run last July. I’m still broken over it and didn’t want a puppy so now I’m not bonding well with this new one. She also got a kitten for herself until he was too rambunctious (as kittens are) so we took him in too, though now he’s my absolute baby and helps with the loss of our dog. But tldr; adults have got to stop getting animals if they have no desire to care for them. They’re alive too. Science has proven they feel emotions, they need nutrition and play time. Small kids don’t really comprehend that so much.

  • Clear storage bins are actually very good homes for hamsters. The cages they sell at pet stores are way to small. My hamsters have very large bins, the lit I cut out a big spot and put a mesh type ziptied for plenty of ventilation. They love it and have so much room to Rome and play and dig

    @Aprilann871@Aprilann8712 ай бұрын

  • This made me cry… my parents bought a hamster when I was 4 and my sister was 12 and we took care of him every single day. We fed him celery and those water things and we would cover hes cage up every night so he doesn’t get cold. After years one day he died…. He died because it was a little to cold and he wasn’t eating that much. I cried so much because he was my life. I took care of him when I was 4 5 6. My sister took care of him to. My parents don’t think we took care of him “a lot” but in reality we did. We took pictures in Christmas and stuff. He was our friend I cried so much that it hurt. But he’s in heaven now and being taken care of god. I just wish he was still alive for a few more years.

  • I took care of a neglected hamster when I was 18. Bought it a very large and expensive cage, switched it on to a very healthy diet and got him tons of toys and things to play in/with. It was 2 1/2 at the time and lived about another year with me. It was quite sad watching it grow old, and listening to it struggle as it was passing away. My two older siblings and I buried him in the backyard of our childhood house. Very heartfelt moment for such a little creature that was once insignificant to it's owners. Since then my sister abandoned us, her whole family because the people she was hanging around at the time convinced her we are evil or something, I don't really know she has us all blocked and no one knows why. Shortly after she started that my brother passed away from an overdose. That memory of standing in my backyard of a house I can no longer go to, burying my hamster with my siblings that are no longer around either is painfully depressing. Idk where I'm going with this, it just came to me from watching this and thought I'd share to the 0 people that'll view this comment.

  • I took in two tortoises from a coworker. Her ex had bought them for her three year old…. Poor babies had nothing - just mulch and lettuce… she was doing the best she could! I just went today and bought stuff and did my first temporary makeover of their home 🥰 I’ve also taken in unwanted birds in the past for someone’s young grandson… Pets are a commitment - and if you aren’t willing to treat them like family - TELL CHILDREN NO. I heard it all the time growing up with three siblings. It took YEARS for us to convince our parents to get a hamster. He had a middle name and we tell stories of him to this day, and we’re all in our 30’s.

  • Thankn you for sabving her from that hell hole, I don't know why people get pets if they can't be bothered to look after them properly. I volunteer with a small independant cat rescue charity in Wales, last year we were inundated with abandoned cats and kittens. If you don't want kittens or pups have your pets neutered there is no excuse.I wish the government would make pet neutering compulsory and clamp down on all breeders.

    • Yes, this is the sad thing about pets--they either don't live long enough, or they live "too long" (as in they take much longer commitment than most can give, like birds and turtles. Those often meet a lethal uncertainty as unwilling or unknowledgeable people inherit them or people's lives/interests change, and they're left behind.)
